At first I thought of Barbie as being too commercial (something to sell dolls to little girls), but now I think Greta Gerwig’s version of Narnia will be something completely different.  At least it may not be all bad.  It does look like Greta has the right attitude towards Narnia, and it will not be something just to make a lot of money. Disney’s leaving Narnia may have meant less money to make the films, but I don’t think that was the cause of the movies no longer being made. There was too much departure from the books. I think Greta should be given a chance since it appears that she has some respect for the material.  Even if the films don’t turn out to be great movies (the Walden films aren’t perfect either) at least we are getting something which is better than nothing. I am not completely pessimistic.

I do like the idea of using realistic landscapes altered by color grading (or by more exotic camera choices, as @icarus suggests) to create a surrealist feel. Using real but bizarre landscapes from around the world would definitely help, such as the glacial fields in Argentina, for example (perhaps for the thaw in LWW).

All things considered, I believe it would be better for Greta to try presenting a real Narnian world in a slightly surreal way, rather than making that world itself surreal, if that makes sense.
