Almost hit 70F the last couple days. but even now the remains of winter refuse to go quietly.
The snow/ice mound behind my garage retains it's icy core, and muddy coat, looking like a disfigured Troll. (Can Trolls ever even be disfigured?)
The yard is coated with a dirty crust from all the snow that was blown on it through the winter, almost as if some giant has used it as his floor mat, wiping his feet as he walked through the neighborhood. Terribly un-neighborly of them.
But I still catch glimpses of Jake Frost's handy work some mornings. He hides it in the sheltered places, sparkling for those ever so short moments as the sun hits them before they fade into memory.
Has anyone told the weather it is mid-march? 37C yesterday and 33C today. I am not happy with this at all..... so humid.......at least it is going to be below 25C for the next week.
Cyclone season it is. Did you hear about Vanuatu? This Pacific Island nation was absolutely flattened by Cyclone Pam. Yes, Ilf, Saturday was hot. And bothered. But it isn't the heat, itself, which has been relatively mild. It has been very humid and stifling as well, until an afternoon storm cools things down. It seems the club my husband and I have joined have just had a spate of deaths among members in February, maybe brought on by this trying weather pattern. Even my own husband has had to have a pacemaker installed. Yesterday was definitely cooler which was just as well.
Oh my I hope he is alright. I do worry about older people in such hot weather. I suffer enough and I am 20. The weather has cooled down and I was loving it today, it was really gray outside and gloomy and not humid.
I cringe just thinking about that kind of heat and humidity...especially with summer looming on the horizon here. We were lucky last year, with very few days reaching 90F/32C (this past winter has also been mild; we didn't even get down to -20F/-29C once). This past weekend was warm; we even set a record high on Sunday.
The weather cooperated for many areas to see spectacular auroral displays over the last day or so, with areas as far south as Nebraska (latitude 40N) getting in on the action. Displays were also reported in New Zealand and Australia.
Alas, I saw nothing here, hampered by city lights and some clouds. Here are just a few shots taken from northern Minnesota.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
Well, nature certainly has a sense of humor. We've had very little snow this entire winter, and now that we've entered spring (both astronomical and meteorological)...it's snowing like crazy outside. Several inches have fallen and this could be the biggest snowfall of the season (not much of a challenge this year).
But it should melt by the middle of the week. With the longer days and higher sun angle, snow doesn't last too long this time of year.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
gazer!!
It truly feels like spring here! It's sunny and warm (in the 50Fs)!! It's just lovely!
I was pondering how relative temperature is yesterday. In the fall when it reaches 50F, I put on a jacket because I can. In spring when it reaches 50F, I take my jacket off--because I can! So interesting!
Love God, love people
We have been enjoying some lovely spring weather as well. (70Fs here!)
But I've got a rather concerned eye on Friday where they're predicting an overnight low of 26F. All of the fruit trees are in bloom and that would likely kill off most of the fruit for the year.
Did somebody say snow? We have some to spare. thankfully it's not worth getting the blower out, but as stargazer pointed out spring is supposed to be making itself known. We have even had talk already of maple sap running.
tried to see the Northern Lights stargazer, but the clouds were just to thick. the local newscast showed some rather spectacular green that was on display elsewhere for St. Patrick's Day.
Must get out to chase the shovel a bit.
Hopefully your fruit trees won't freeze, fantasia.
Astronomical spring...check.
Meteorological spring...check.
Six inches (160mm) of fresh snow...check.
Lakeville, about half an hour south of here, reported 10 inches (255mm) and some towns south of there got over a foot of new snow. It's the wet heavy heart-attack snow, but at least with spring around the corner much of it should melt fairly quickly. In fact, there's a chance of rain tomorrow which would take care of it...except that rain is supposed to turn over to snow tomorrow evening and give us more white stuff.
Ah, nothing like four seasons. Wait, what were the others again?
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
Enjoy your spring snow.
Super happy to say that they've changed Friday's low from 26F to 40F. Tonight they're projecting a low of 33F when a cold front (With storms?) comes through, but that shouldn't freeze stuff.
Puddleglum, I so like your metaphors and descriptions here.
37C yesterday and 33C today.
I really do not look forward to these possible temps at time this summer. Glad the temps cooled down for you last week, IlF.
Oh my, wagga, I hope your husband is okay.
Those aurora shots are beyond gorgeous, stargazer! And what an odd snowstorm you guys received a few days ago. Not that it's that strange for this time of year, but with your lack of snow this past winter ...

What a relief for the farmers and all the fruit trees, fantasia!
Our bitter cold has ended, although earlier this week we reached wind chills of -20C/-4F during the nighttime hours with very cold and clear skies. That, however, is not 'bitterly cold' for us. Today is supposed to reach the relatively warm temperature of 10C/50F, with rain, but it's only just above freezing now at 2 p.m., so we shall see. What a change, though, if that warmer temperature is actually reached! Then we're dropping in a couple of days to below freezing with flurries. No accumulation though. The farmers' fields are so pretty now with sporadic snow patches intermingled with the rich, brown spring earth. A sure sign spring is coming is the more regular appearance of farm vehicles of every shape and size trundling down the roads. And certain barn scents pervading the air.

So, when did I post that ^ ... Wednesday afternoon? Yup. The following morning, quite unexpectedly, we received snow. It fell for 4-5 hours with some accumulation, but by the time the late afternoon came (whereupon temps rose a bit), much of it had melted. Still, it was gorgeous while it lasted. Overnight a cold mass came in again, freezing everything, with quite the wind chill all day today. Tonight could get down to -20C/-4F, but then rising gradually into next week until we reach more seasonable air, around +5C/41F. Before that, however (on Sunday night), we could be in for some more snow. March may go out like a lion. It came in as one too, so go figure.

We are actually having a cold spell after a warm week. Nothing like you have, though, Jo. it's been in the 20Fs-30Fs. But, thankfully, no precipitation. We are even having sunshine!
Love God, love people
I'm in Seattle visiting relatives, and it's been quite a change in the weather. It was 16F when I got on the plane and close to 70F when I got off. No snow here, of course (barely any even in the Cascades except for the permanent stuff). The weekend was cooler and cloudy with occasional rain, more the kind of weather Seattle is famous for. Flowers blooming everywhere, while at home the ground was still covered with snow.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
