It makes me worry about the success of the movie (and by extension, the future of the franchise) because I don't think it does a very good job of selling it. As a fan, I was excited by the trailer (just for the fact that there was new Narnia footage) but I just can't see it doing much for a non-reader.
My sentiments exactly. As a fan I felt nothing but excitement while watching the trailer, but it was for that very reason, because I was a fan of the book series whose anticipation over viewing any footage relating to the movie made the trailer seem spectacular. But you took the words right out of my mouth: it won't neccessarily do the same for the non-reader.

After reading members' posts, it seems to me that the quality of this trailer, and therefore of any trailer, depends on the company producing the film. And that trailer may or may not have a financial effect on the film -- and its success. It may not reflect on the artistry and quality of the film at all. It just sounds to me like Disney vs Fox vs Warner Bros vs _ [fill in the blank]. In other words, who can make the best trailer?
I agree with coracle that this isn't a university literature assignment. This is just a 2-minute teaser trailer, which I happened to like. I can see now its 3-fold purpose, which I think it accomplished. I expect more of a later trailer, which I hope and pray outshines Harry Potter and Twilight. I want a 'wow' effect or something. But I think this trailer doesn't reflect on the quality of the film. I expect a lot of VDT in December!
The trailer is a 4 star for me than 5, because of many reasons that I cannot cite right now, but I still loved it! I just have to see the movie instead of criticizing the teaser trailer, but, go VDT!
"Two sides of the same coin"
I agree that the main point of the Lone Island scene is that they retake the island without force and that using force would be a bad idea. Much of VDT deals with when to use force and when not to. I think it is important for kids to see that it doesn't require violence to solve problems. Sometimes brain is more important than brawn.
You're expecting a battle, but Caspian manages to do everything without a battle. Slightly comical perhaps, but brilliant.
I think you have hit the nail on the head there. I think it can be just as powerful and perhaps even more powerful to not give people what they expect. If we always got what we expected then what would be the fun of reading books or watching movies? (expect in the case of movies based on books in which I want to get what I expect in other words, a movie that is very close to the books) O. Henry's short stories are famous because the readers doesn't get what they expect. For me battles really don't create that much tension. Of course, I haven't seen many movies with battles (LotRs and Narnia are the only ones that come to mind). I also agree that tension can happen without battles. I think some of the most tense things I've watched are the Mission Impossible episodes from the 60s and 70s. They build the suspense really well and while there is some violence (usually a karate chop to the neck or a fist fight) much of the tension comes from whether or not they are going to get caught and / or found out.
I got to thinking about that one little clip we have of fighting in the Lone Island. There are very few people in it, so it doesn't seem like a full fledged battle. Maybe it is not a fight to recapture the islands but the Narnians are fighting not to be captured to be sold in to slaves. Perhaps they some how got separated from the group and were attacked by slavers. I'm not crazy about any fighting on the Lone Islands but if they must have fighting I hope it involves how some of the Narnians are captured as slaves and not "retaking the island" or "freeing the slaves."
NW sister to Movie Aristotle & daughter of the King
This trailer gives me the same feeling I get from watching trailers for movies like Shrek 4: "Oh brother , they're seriously making another one? "
It feels like a cheap direct-to-video sequal produced only to milk a few more dollars out of a dying franchise. I think the movie probably will not turn out to be that, but that's the taste this trailer leaves in my mouth.

That's true to an extent, but there is still no escaping the fact that Edmund is whining about being a king, it looks like the Dark Island has been replaced with the Green Island, the White Witch speaks in the movie, a faun does a front-flip at the Lone Islands, and Caspian goes with them to the world's end.
Even if it was a very well-edited trailer, those shots would still concern me.
But on the other hand, the trailer holds a lot back. Very little Eustace and no dragon, for example. So, all I can say is that the trailer leaves a very bad taste in my mouth about the film, but hopefully all the footage we haven't seen will cure that.
^^ but I've always thought that the point of teaser trailers was to make the viewer want more, thus having very little of Eustace (who's new to the on screen Narnia characters) and not having any of Caspian's dialouge

Probably everyone didn't even realize that Eustace was in the trailer. I think we only noticed because we notice the details. If you didn't know the story, i am not sure you would remember him.

I agree with decarus. If you haven't read the book, you probably wouldn't even notice Eustace is in the trailer, much less want to see more of him. I'm afraid that this is going to be such a Pevensie-centric movie that people won't even notice Eustace.
Do we know how long Eustace will be a dragon in the film yet? If he is a dragon for most of the movie it would make sense that he wasn't in the trailer much.
Well i think he is going to be a dragon for an extended period of time, but we don't really know for certain.

If this movie turns out the way it looks like it's going to turn out, this might be the last narnia movie they make.

Well if it is a terrible film like PC i would also rather it was the last Narnia film they make.

Yeah I agree. They're really starting to beat a dead horse-
-omp I'm a king not a kid!
-Hi I'm reepicheep I'm cute! Laugh at me!
-Hi I'm the white witch I'm supposed to be dead but I'm gonna come back!
-Oh hi, I'm Peter and this is Susan, yeah we're not even supposed to be here really, but our adventure is just beginning!
They're not just beating a dead horse! They're digging up the bones of a dead horse, grinding them, making it into stew, and slapping "3D!" on it. "Please come, we want to make money!"
