Usually the last trailer comes out three to two months before the movies release. We might get some behind the scene footage, TV Spots and new pictures before October or September. The big trailer could possibly come out in September but I still think that is too soon, but don't give up hope! ;)

Looking good. Tough job weaving a movie together that will please the family viewing audience and the core purists. On the whole, it feels quite good.

Lucy is using Susan's bow and arrows. Hmm. Not sure I like all this gift swapping.

Not surprising. Kinda cool. Perhaps Jill Pole will be using the same bow?

... And, still no dragon.

Indeed. I was not expecting to see him, and we wont see Eustace Dragon until much later this year.

~Wow Georgie Henley has really grown up!
~Will Poulter seems perfect for Eustace even in the one line we heard from him!

Ditto. :-bd

Was it Apted who said the theme of the movie was temptation?

Listen to the interview here in Douglas Gresham Talks Screwtape/Dawn Treader. Answers this question very well. B-)

On Edmund's statement of being a King, I see that setting up for the temptation he is going to have set before him later in the movie by the WW vision. It works well.

On critiques of the overall appearance of the trailer, I believe it can only be accurately evaluated in on a big screen - a little over 5 months from now.

I have just read the rest of the comments on this thread. Depressingly negative on the whole.

Aww. Kinda normal. Sift through it. There are incurably positive sorts like me around. I distribute chocolate - great sedative or mood elevating effects. Preparation H is on hand too for the difficult cases.

“Safe?” said Mr. Beaver; “don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”

The teasers from the previous films were so much better. They tell what the story is about and make the public excited. This one tells nothing, shows nothing that looks great or finished and is jut a lot of shots with some audio. There is no excitement whatsoever.

Oh, and I understand that the CG isn't finished, but why would you show an unfinished minotaur in the trailer?

Why is Lucy using Susan's bow. As it seems to be in daylight, I guess she is aiming at the sea serpent. Again, opposite from the book, then. The Sea serpent is defeated by outsmartening him.

I've been wondering about that shot. I don't think it's the sea serpent, but I can't figure out what's going on! If you look at the screen cap of that shot, in the lower right-hand corner there's a guy (I think it's one of the crew) who looks like he's sleeping. I suppose he could be knocked out or something, but usually people don't lie on their backs after they've been knocked out (at least not in the movies).

Due to the bad montage the film comes across as just another fairy tale.

I completely agree. There were several trailers for fantasy movies and movies that featured superheroes and the like in front of Toy Story 3. The VDT trailer does not stand out from any of those. It looks pretty good, but it's not as good as it could be. I'm sure the movie will be great, and we've heard good stuff about the super trailer, so I'm not worried. A little disappointed, but not worried.

The bad:
- The opening of the trailer was horrible. The scene were Ed tries to join the army is shot in a very Lars von Trier-like way. It's like they gave someone who was there a camera and said: now you choose an angle. The angels used are really dull and boring. This is especially so if you compare it to the rest of the trailer, where they obviously try to make it look very Tim Burton-esque.

No...this trailer didn't make my optic nerve explode from frenetic colors. :p

And why does edmund want to subscribe? Is it because Peter went to war (that would be totally against the lesson he learned in PC) or because his father hasn't returned? Or are they just repeating the peter-plot from PC? terrible. Also, the way he is presented, with clothes that are to big, make him look ridiculous. It does appear that the "I'm a king" line is not exactly in the place it will be, because his lips aren't moving in the shot at the bike. So maybe in the end, it won't be as cheesy as it looks. But the entire scene feels as if it is a fan film, it really comes across as if the people who made it have no idea what they were doing.

Peter is not at war. He's at university/staying with Professor Kirke. The books say so. There was no indication that Peter joined the army. Edmund trying to join makes complete sense with his character arc from the previous films, as I've repeatedly been saying. Edmund is a solider used to fighting for his country. How could he stand by while his homeland gets slammed by the Nazis? Besides, underage boys trying to enlist was very, very common both in Britain and the US during WWII. He wants to help his country, whereas Peter was just exhibiting teenage angst and not adjusting well to being a kid again. Edmund is much more adjusted as can be seen from him stopping the fight in PC and his jibes at Peter afterwards. ("You're welcome", "We are kids" etc.)

As for fan films...have you seen "Born of Hope"? Fan films can be extremely well-filmed, costumed, acted, and edited.

-The dawn treader looks very fake and plastic-like. It should look like it has been used before to make it a bit more credible. Also, I got the feeling the color correction wasn't done yet, which makes the entire trailer looks fake.

Why? She's a brand new ship, Narnia's first in centuries. Caspian says so in the book.

- the shot of Aslan in the glass/mirror is horrible. He looks completely like the BBC ASlan in this shot, and he has a floating head, which looks funny.

Hahaha! =)) Have you seen the BBC version lately? At least this Aslan's mouth moves with the words and has facial expression!

-The minotaur is hideous, he doesn't look good at all. All the CGI models look like they are different from the previous films. Reepicheep has another mouth and looks way to fluffy, Aslan looks fake and different (stupid, because he was great in PC). His roar at the end of the trailer is just horrible. It's like the camera makes thin uncontrolled movement. The minotaurs seemed to have been completely redesigned, and not in a good way.

Tralier=some CGI not smoothed out.It will probably be more together in the film.

-the map is clearly one of those 3D effects I can't stand. 3D should be used to draw the audience in the film, not to make something come out of it.

I agree. Blegh. I really dislike 3D, especially when it's forced. I won't be seeing the 3D version because I prefer 2D, and I can't afford the 3D tickets!

-The dark Island shots are unfinished I guess. It could be a good approach, if they make the mist darker, and make it look realistic. it just seems unfinished. The White Witch has NO use. Did anyone notice What she said?! "I can make you my King". Edmund already IS a king!!! and she has green eyes. Don't, please don't tell me she is... I won't say it, it's to awful.

I really, really hope beyond hoping that they don't cast Tilda as the LGK. (because I want to play her! :p )

Also, if I'm right and the Witch is part of the Dark Island (where nightmares come true) she is Edmund's worst nightmare, along with what she tempted him with before. It makes sense that he would relive that, especially if they go with Edmund's arc from the book of him being a little uneasy about leaving his country in Caspian's new and inexperienced hands. (Which I love and hope comes through, at least subtly).

-The magician's book: the blowing over the cover looks a bit fake. I don't like the shot of Lucy going through the book. Don't know why, but it just does not feel like lucy to me.The snow does not work in the trailer, but I believe it could be a very powerful moment in the film.

This is Lucy's temptation scene. A little un-Lucyness is probably going to happen.

-Why do they keep saying EPIC. the books aren't that epic at all!

Because it's an industry buzzword to excite the general public.

-The faith of Narnia depends on you. AAARCH!!!!!

I believe she said 'fate', not 'faith'. And even without any lurking danger, it's true. Caspian is the king. Narnia's fate does depend on him.

-Ramandu's Daughter can actually change into a star? That is not how I imagined her.

Me neither, but Lewis was never very clear on what exactly she was. He just said she was the daughter of a star. There's a lot of space for the writers to have creative license with her abilities and what she is. But a more Stardust like glow would be preferable to a Roman candle Galadriel glow which she almost has.

-Why is Lucy using Susan's bow. As it seems to be in daylight, I guess she is aiming at the sea serpent. Again, opposite from the book, then. The Sea serpent is defeated by outsmartening him.

Are we sure it's Susan's bow and not just a Narnian bow? (I'm still more bugged about Susan using Susan's bow for anything other than archery contests. :-w ) The serpent still might be defeated the way he was in the book, but even in the book they all attack him first before they start pushing.

-The border to Aslan's country: The water isn't high enough, and it looks very strange.

Everything is ruined! :p

- the Four Pevensies: I have absolutely no idea what this could be, but I certainly do not like it.

I think this is marketing. At least I hope so. :-s

-Due to the bad montage the film comes across as just another fairy tale. It looks like a movie of which the filmmakers no it isn't gonna be a success, but who make it anyways. in the trailer, the film appears to not take itself serious. That is necessary in a fantasy film to make the whole film believable!

I don't know how you can get all that from the first teaser trailer that had to be released on a studio deadline.

-not enough screentime for Caspian and Eustace.

I think they're going to have more of them in the next trailer. It seems like they wanted to get people interested so they used familiar faces and exciting stuff. Trailers are for the general, uninformed, non-Narnia fan public. This will get people's attention and put the idea of a next Narnia film in their heads until the new trailer comes out, probably around October.

-Reepicheep has one line, but his voice seems pretty much the same.

I was so impressed by that! Eddie Izzard has such a distinct voice, so it must be hard to try to keep continuity. I hope it carries through well.

-There are no wars to fight!

YES!!!!!

So, overall, not happy with the teaser, but I blame the montage, the footage looks fine, although I'm not happy with some changes. I hope the first trailer is better than this one. Does anybody have any Idea when it would be here? I need to be comforted!!!

It's not a great trailer, but it does what it's supposed to do as a teaser: shows some exciting footage and the release date.

What a bummer! This is like nothing I imagined. It's AWFUL! I actually thought I was dreaming, that I would really wake up soon. But I didn't.
I now it's very pessimistic to start with the bad things, but there just aren't many good things to talk about....

So, overall, not happy with the teaser, but I blame the montage, the footage looks fine, although I'm not happy with some changes. I hope the first trailer is better than this one. Does anybody have any Idea when it would be here? I need to be comforted!!!

I must say I agree with a lot of your pluses and minuses. Big minuses to me include the following:

1. Edmund wants to be a king. We got this with Peter, thank you very much.
2. Edmund is tempted by the witch. Enough already! When will he get over this? Oh yea, and isn't dark island supposed to be dark?
3. Looks like annoying 3D shots have made it in to some degree at least.
4. The Dawn Treader doesn't look as good as I thought it would.
5. The film doesn't look "real". It looks cheesy like a sort of made-for-tv feel to it.
6. Susan and Peter at the end. What? I'm annoyed by the witch but confused by this. What is going on? :-o
7. "The fate of Narnia depends on you. :((

The pluses:

1. Coriakin looks great! I love it. Not at all cliche.
2. So far, the islands look wonderful and better than I thought they would.
3. The trailer stresses there are no wars to fight. Excellent. Still, what is the fate that awaits otherwise? There was action added, but not as much as I originally feared. No battles shown.
4. Key moments are in. The waterfall at the end, the islands, the characters, etc.

I didn't mention the CGI just because it's too early to call. I watched the LWW teaser and it also has some lousy CGI but much much less of it.

On critiques of the overall appearance of the trailer, I believe it can only be accurately evaluated in on a big screen - a little over 5 months from now.

Still, I think that trailers can give an idea of the feel and overall appearance. Most films I'm thinking of are consistent with this, whether they be trailers for Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter or Star Trek.

Remember, this is only a teaser trailer. If I remember correctly, a few of the scenes in the PC teaser never even made it to the movie. So....with that it mind.....

Edmund has always been my favorite character, so I hope they do him justice in this movie. I DO NOT LIKE the way they made Edmund turn into a Peter with that whining at the beginning about not being a king. YUCK. He is so above that, and we already saw that in the last movie. Don't want a repeat of it.

Some of the CGI looks fake...I hope they clean that up.

RD's canned line about 'the fate of Narnia depends on you' is so overused by now. They need to cut that from the movie.

And where did Edmund get sting? :-

I am so mad that they have Jadis in this movie. X( Talk about unnecessary. TOTALLY unnecessary. And after Edmund sort of vanquished Jadis in PC and kept Peter and Caspian from being tempted by her. To have Edmund himself tempted in VDT is ridiculous. Not to mention I'm getting tired of Jadis.

I LOVE the transition from the bedroom to Narnia. So wonderful! And Eustace looks very bratty. :D

I'm still so excited for this movie, and I think I will enjoy it. I hope the big trailer we will see in a few months is more impressive though.

WHAT ABOUT TIRIAN'S VDT MOVIE REPORT?! :-t You know the one I'm talking about - where Tirian stated that he really liked what they were doing with the upcoming film. This is the Trailer Discussion thread. Yes, I am aware of that and that the trailer itself isn't so hot. All of that I agree with and acknowledge. What is getting me riled up (if I may be that drastic) is the fact that people seem to me to be assuming that because the trailer is bad, that automatically makes the movie bad. Doe any past reports mean anything, now the the trailer has come out? Does the fact matter that one of our distinguished own has seen what the plot of the story is going to be and has applauded it? I say that we should not take this trailer to seriously and wait till we have more information.

On critiques of the overall appearance ...

Still, I think that trailers can give an idea of the feel and overall appearance.

Agreed on that. I should have clarified specific to the CGI and other effects to include 3D.

As for concerns about the CGI, the effects houses involved are tried and proven in big ways. Seriously not concerned with a company like The Moving Picture Company (MPC) suspected to be working on Dragon Eustace (here).

WHAT ...

Aww. You don't have to yell. Folks can agree to disagree here. You don't have to share anyone's feelings. Sort through it all. There is always someone around that is incurably positive ... like me, and Claire-ayes. Breathe. In through the nose. Out through the mouth. Breathe.

Ok, finally here are my thoughts about the Trailer!

The Picture/entering Narnia: The picture is not 100% the way I pictured it. In my head the ship was closer and more in the forefront of the picture, but I Love the way they did it. :D
The way they made the ship move was just amazing and then for the water to spray from the frame was so cool. :D
I can see Eustace’s bratty attitude already! His face screams Eustace when he says “What’s going on here?” I Love that! :p =))
When reading the book I always pictured them going into the frame. I can see why it would look strange for them to go into the frame. So I see why they had the picture come out to them instead.

The Dawn Treader: The Dawn Treader is just gorgeous, and to finally see her on the water was incredible! They did the ship justice! :D

Reep: I think Reep looks great! :) I Love when he climbs to the top of the mast and has that little smile! He is so cute! And I’m so glad they let us hear his voice! :D I think he sounds the same, so I’m happy!
NOTE: anyone else notice Eustace in the back in this shot, I think it’s right before he throws his tantrum we saw Will Poulter filming on the gold coast! =))

Naiad: Finally!!!!! :D I’ve been wanting to see a Naiad since LWW, I was disappointed when they weren’t included in the film, I’m glad they added them into VDT! :D

Coriakin: Almost how I pictured him, I like the way they did him. I’m so glad they included the part with the map! (I hope the sell a replica of the map!) :)

The shot of Eustace peeking though something: I think this part takes place on the Lone Islands, judging by the background, maybe when they are trying to escape from the slave traders.

Ok the Dark Island: First off I’m not worried about the White Witch. I had a thought though, and I thought about this even before the trailer.
Do you think they will replace the Albatross and make Ramandu’s Daughter the one who saves them in the dark island instead of Aslan? :-s =; I really, really hope not, it needs to be Aslan! [-( Oh, and I pictured it much darker, but maybe the mist gives out a sort of light. Another thought, didn’t we hear about some mist that had to do with the Unfathomable fate? Is this it? :-

The Magicians Book: The room is much bigger then I imagined, but the book is just as I imaged! I Love that they kept this scene in, and it’s a great way for Anna to have a cameo! :D

Ramandu’s Daughter: I Love the way they did her, just like the book! (without the glowing :p ).
I’m curious if she will ever loose her glow? Like after she marries Caspian? :-
I was trying to figure out where they were at in the shot where she is turning back into a star. :-

The Lone Islands: looks like they are going to have a battle as they leave, I figured it though, looks really good! As long as they have Caspian coming in and getting rid of Gumpus I’m happy! :)

Susan’s bow: Lucy definitely is using Susan’s bow, I can’t figure out which scene it is but two guys look dead or knocked out behind her.

The Dufflepuds: They look just as I imaged! Just Awesome! And Eustace’s face, LOL! =))

The Silver Sea: What can I say, it’s pure beauty! I can’t believe that scene just popped out of the book! Just as I imagined! :) :D

The Very End of the World: I never pictured a beach, just grass and I thought Reep was supposed to be gone? I wonder how that will turn out?

The Four Pevensies: Ok, at first I was all confused but my sister had a very good thought about this scene.
What if that scene takes place at the end after Lu and Ed are sent home and they are back with Peter and Susan in England and as they are walking the scene changes from them being in England to them being in Narnia, because Narnia is what is in there heart and they know inside they are Kings and Queens and then the scene will change back to them in England, so even though they live in England, Narnia is always in them, I’m not sure if I’m making any sense? :- :)

And Finally the Logo looks great at the end! :D

I hope the Theatrical Trailer will include more lines from Eustace and Caspian! :)

The Value of myth is that it takes all the things you know and restores to them the rich significance which has been hidden by the veil of familiarity. C.S. Lewis

Scrutiny often turns up things we would not usually notice. Die-hard fans of the movies (positive and negative) can examine things perhaps too closely without having ALL the information; this often does not have a exemplary outcome. But here at NWeb, such scrutiny is what the forums are all about.

You don't have to shout. I would've heard you *nudges gently* ... although my wife (ramagut) yelled back a few pages ... and she would say I often don't listen to her.

“Safe?” said Mr. Beaver; “don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”
