On the topic of David Arnold keeping HGW's themes from the first two movies, check this out....

Music Department
Harry Gregson-Williams .... composer: theme music

So there you go. The themes from the first two movies will be kept in VDT. :D

"yes fantasia_kitty I remember hearing that.

Usually the themes itself will go through some stylistic changes, but, they will never actually change the main them entierally. They did not do that for Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, the Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and the Pirates of the Caribbean and any other film that has a series like Indiana Jones, and James Bond.

All of those films added different thematic music to the films, but the main themes never ever changed, regardless if the composers changed.

Well to Narnia and the North

I think VODT needs to be adventurous and new; it is the first movie set out of Narnia. Thus, perhaps it is a good thing that there is David Arnolds in place of HGW. Fantasia_kitty, I'm glad to hear that the main theme will remain, however. There needs to be a sense of continuity, but there should also be originality!

I'm really glad to hear that the main theme will be the same. #:-s
I never really had a problem with the reuse of music in PC until I saw people pointing it out. :p That's how most things go with me.. even now I don't mind it too much.
I generally like the continuity between music in movies. I don't like how the music has changed so much in Harry Potter - it gives it a totally different feel, for me. I'm hoping that in the last two movies they'll go back to some of the music from the earlier movies.
Anyway, for VDT I think that there should be new themes, just because VDT is a rather different story from LWW and PC. But I also want there to be little moments where the music takes you back to the previous movies (I love it in PC where Mr.Tumnus' theme plays).

Avie by flambeau.

I can't wait to hear what the music for VotDT is going to sound like!

The music of Narnia is magnificent. My favourite parts are "The Battle" and "Return of the Lion". I think that Harry Gregson Williams did wonderful work with the music from the last two movies. As to the OST of VotDT, I'm also very impatient to listen once again to these beautiful sounds. And it's really good, that the main theme will be the same, so the tradition will be keep :) .

Basileus Peter Pevensie: I agree with you about the music for VotDT!
I can't wait to hear how the music will sound for VotDT, especially since it is going to be done by a different person than LWW and PC! The man doing it (sorry, ya'll, I can't remember his name!) also did the soundtrack for Michael Apted's movie "Amazing Grace" and I love the music in that movie, so the music for VotDT should be awesome! :D :) :D

I loved what Harry did w/ the score for LWW, and I also loved the way he kept The Narnia Battle Theme in PC...but I still would have liked something a little fresher...I'm a little nervous about a new composer, but he should make it fresher!

I'm sure, that Mr. Williams has new ideas, which are on their way :) . The battles are really important scenes. The appearance of Aslan, Peter and other main characters was very good sound-screened...especially the scene in the first movie, when Aslan ran on the top and roar.

I think that the villains need memorable themes. I mean, look at Jadis, she has quite a bit part in The Magicians Nephew, so I think it makes sense to give her a unique theme. Same with Rabadash, Tash and Shift.
I think all these characters deserve some unique music that lets the audience get a feel for their character.
Sadly, I don't think we've really had that yet.

It's a very interesting idea. The appearance of the villains need their influence. Well, if not in the next movie, I think, that they will do it for the LB movie :) .

Ok, now let's go back a bit further, to CS Lewis himself. What music did he listen to? As a Classical Music lover I've been keen to research this very subject. His three favorite composers were Beethoven (you will know the 'Ode to Joy' theme from his Ninth symphony), Wagner (you'll know "Ride of the Valkyries"), and Sibelius (you may know "Finlandia").

With this in mind, when I re-read (and listened to) The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, it was with Jean Sibelius' Symphony No.7 in mind.

If anyone is curious to listen to this music, I very much recommend you do so. It's the music 'behind' the man who created Narnia, after all.

I hate to break it to you, but in a Q & A session I heard with Doug Gresham, he said in later years Lewis didn't listen to music at all, said he had grown out of it - and was embarrassed that he had liked Wagner.

When Doug was living in Lewis' house in the 1950s, Lewis didn't read newspapers, didn't have TV, didn't listen to the radio. There was a radio in the kitchen, the gardener read one newspaper and Doug's mum (Lewis's wife by then) did the crossword puzzles in it.

There, shining in the sunrise, larger than they had seen him before, shaking his mane (for it had apparently grown again) stood Aslan himself.
"...when a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor's stead, the Table would crack and Death itself would start working backwards."

"The Battle" and "Prince Caspian Flees" are my favorite pieces from each respective movie. I was never really into the songs outside of the score, a bit too...I'm not sure what the word is...generic? Lyrically I thought "The Call" was fitting but musically it doesn't strike me. On the other hand I do feel Oren Lavie's "Dance 'Round the Memory Tree" is the non-instrumental Narnia song for me. I'll miss HGW but I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with VDT. I agree it needs an adventurous feeling to it, of new experiences and discovery. Whenever I think of VDT I hear Vanessa Mae's orchestral version of "Red Hot" which isn't the best score music per se but it carries the right spirit in my opinion.

I've mentioned this before, but I would like to mention it again just in case anyone is interested.

For me, the music of Jean Sibelius has a deep connection with Narnia. I don't claim CSL was influenced by it himself in writing Narnia---though he was a huge fan of Sibelius' music (mention it many times in letters to friends). Sibelius' Symphony No.7 in particular seems a companion to VDT. Check it out: and notice the mysterious, glimmering, otherwordly aspect of the music. See how much you think it matches the mood of the book in such scenes as the undragoning, the dark island, Ramandu's island, and in particular the last three chapters (with the merpeople and sailing "past" the sun).

"Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed."- CS Lewis
