I mean modernism would not fit Tolkien’s lifestyle in that he probably would not have liked most modern things. He would probably not like the way that the modern world almost worships technology. He might have accepted modern inventions, but he didn’t worship them or like them that much or was obsessed with them. It was more like he learned to live with them. And Lewis felt pretty much the same way. He and Tolkien would have said “Don’t make a god out of technology” if they were living today. That is something which people believe that doesn’t fit the world as the way it is created to be. Certainly Tolkien had electricity and other modern comforts, but I am certain that he wouldn’t have had a “smart TV” if he were living today and I am not even sure if he would have wanted a computer. He might have viewed technology as a necessary evil since he was a medievalist. I think he viewed modern inventions such as automobiles as something that we have to live with rather than something that we should love. I am certain that he disliked technology even though he used it.
