I thought Oblivion was a decent game, if a bit repetetive, but good nonetheless. But I must admit I never finished it ...I played a Thief, one of those cat people.

I tried Morrowind three times, and was unsuccessfully able to get into it all three times. Kind of weird as that's normally my kind of game, but the problem I had was that the world was TOO big with too many options. Plus unlike WoW, I didn't have anyone to play with. So that was that. My husband loved it though.
@fantasia_kitty: No worries, I can see why you thought I was referring to fps.
Well, how DO you define "hard-core gamer" then anyway
? Back in the days (and still does, judging from some of Mario Galaxy and 2's missions) Nintendo made some of the hardest games to beat. This came to the point that, to this day incredibly hard games are refered to as "Nintendo hard".
I think a Hardcore gamer is someone who dedicates a large amount of time getting into the nitty gritty of the game. To accomplish all of their goals (getting 100%, achievement or trophies). A gamer who prefers to take significant time on games, and like to play more involved games that require larger amounts of time to complete or master. I think thats the best way to describe a Hardcore Gamer.
(also if you watch E3 and Check video game news regularly. ) That's the best I can describe it.
The Value of myth is that it takes all the things you know and restores to them the rich significance which has been hidden by the veil of familiarity. C.S. Lewis
I found repetitive Oblivion too... compared with Morrowind... but which game do you think Shadowlander it's a better RPG game? (except WOW).
I found it much better than dragon age (Uncounting graphics)

Don't misunderstand me . I think Oblivion was a deeply beautiful game. I could spend hours walking around and not find even the tiniest fraction of secret places in the landscape. I also took a liking to collecting the various herbs and creating potions out of them
. Archery was absolutely fantastic! I loved taking down enemies from a distance and oftentimes they'd never even see me coming
. But after a while the whole game got this feeling of 'samey-ness' about it. Beauty can only take a game so far, you know?

Dragon Age just didn't do anything for me. It felt like a mediocre Mass Effect mod and one that was particularly unpolished at that. Speaking of which I think Mass Effect has great RPG elements in it, but I have to toss my vote for Fallout 3. I love the Fallout series anyway and have for the past 10+ years, but it is the game that really redefined RPG's. I challenge anyone to find a game as immersive and that can be played and completed in so many different ways.

Well I finally broke down and preordered Heroes of Might and Magic VI last night, the Limited Edition version. (It came with a cool looking sword and even cooler looking hero that reminded me very much of Lady Vashj from Warcraft. I couldn't resist!)
Since I ordered it early, they gave me a beta key, so I'm actually doing the few campaign bits that they've released. Big thumbs up for me so far. Heroes IV will always be my favorite I think, but it got such poor reviews when V came out, it was very much like III and I hated it. VI seems to be going off on its own game play style which makes me happy.
SL, you would really like this game!

Glad I wasn't asked this question. I have no clue what I would pick for the best RPG game ever. There are so many good ones out there.
There are two types of RPG games according to that definition. I usually call games like WOW and Starcraft etc to be MMOSG, (massive multi-player on-line strategy games) or MMRPG (massive multi-player role paying games). The other type of RPG are what games like Final Fantasy, the Tales series (Tales of Symphonia, Tales of Legendia, etc), and many others. To answer the question of best RPG for the latter group, that is a very tough decision. My list includes Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VII, FF IX, and Tales of Symphonia.
Be watching for the release of my spiritual warfare novel under a new title: "Call to Arms" by OakTara Publishing. A sequel (title TBD) will shortly follow.
ok thanks for posting.... I will take a look at these games

Ok ok ok...I'm downloading the demo and will tell you what I think of it. I have misgivings already since it looks like it's anime-ish

Of all the faults it has, anime-ish is not one of them. Well, not Heroes VI. Clash of Heroes was anime-ish.

ok, so Clash of Heroes is the wrong one?

Challenge Accepted! Deus Ex 1, the game that introduced the RPG/FPS Hybrid 11 years ago and is lauded as the "best (PC) game of all time".

Now that's a better definition!
Just for reference:
http://www.coffeewithgames.com/2011/04/years-worth-of-data-monster-hunter-tri.html
Meaning on average, every player who has played Monster Hunter Tri has done so for 90 hours.

And that is 773 hours for a single player RPG

Oooh, Deus Ex is a great game! And there are numerous ways to beat it. Such a fun game that now that you bring it up I might have to go look for it on Steam this afternoon if I get a few minutes spare time . But if we're going to go that route I can easily bring up Baldur's Gate and Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, two outstanding games that are absolutely RPG's in the truest sense of the form. Arcanum especially was a lot of fun...a Steampunk adventure featuring all the classic fantasy races (Elves, Dwarfs, Orcs, etc.) but in a Victorian era setting where high technology is set against arcane magic. Really fun game, albeit a much older one.
Ok FK, I'll have to see about downloading the *right* demo this time . Give me a day or two! My brother is coming over for our weekly board game summit today and we'll be doing that for many hours.
