Hi, @Starlit! Welcome to NarniaWeb.  Wave I like to ask any new members who have children if they have read the Chronicles to their kids yet. So, posing the same question to you. Smile

It's interesting that you first read the series in your 20s. We have some members here who, also, did not read them until their young adult years. I think having that taste of them at that age would be uniquely special and different from reading them in childhood.

Thanks! So my older two kids read the series on their own. My youngest (8) didn't want to, she was concerned it would be too scary. (She's very skittish about anything scary; she even got freaked out when Beetlejuice was mentioned in a puzzle on Wheel of Fortune.) I did have her in the car when playing the part of the audiobook of Silver Chair and she liked it, though her older sister had to assure her nobody would be hurt by the giants.

I do wonder how I would have perceived the series as a kid. For example, I don't think I would have appreciated the Horse and His Boy so much as a kid, but it's one of my favorites. The moral themes are straightforward but not as easy to tease out with so much action going on in the plot.

That is great re your kids, @starlit! Maybe your youngest will get into the Chronicles eventually. I appreciate her sensitivity to scary things in stories.

I was read the Chronicles by my parents not long before I started kindergarten, then when I started reading, read them on my own, and have been doing so ever since. Giggle We introduced the seven books to our own kids when they were young. I have wonderful memories sitting around the campfire (after having a swim) and reading the Narnia series and The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to them. When it came time to stop for the night, they would beg me for "just one more chapter". Grin

You're bang on (at least in my experience) about The Horse and His Boy. It was my least favourite of the Chronicles ... not to say I didn't like it, rather, the other Narnia tales were closer to the top that it was. But as an adult, it has moved up the list so that it may even be tied with my favourite (The Silver Chair, although I often say my favourite is whichever book I am reading at the time Giggle ). The layers of depth in THaHB is phenomenal, and something I would not have picked up on as a youngster.

Btw, I am curious as to the significance of your username. There are a few of us here on NWeb who are rather passionate about viewing the wonders of the night sky. Star

My username has kind of a dual significance. I really like the song Starlight by Muse, and it's also a reference to one of my favorite Narnia characters, Ramandu.

@notswanwhite, I think your username is fun! Giggle   Very cool about your business. I hope it is doing well! And interesting on the cloth weaving and your love of arts and crafts. I have almost zippo talent in that area, so I admire those of you who can (sub) create so beautifully. Smile

Though I've been on NarniaWeb since 2005, I've been inactive for quite some time and my life is very different now, for the better. Therefore, probably good to re-introduce myself. GlumPuddle may remember me, I will always be indebted to his prayers.

1. Name (please avoid your real full name):  Mike or Michael as you please.

2. King or Queen of Narnia (guy or girl):  King

3. Family (single/married/kids):  Married, 2 kids (one 13 yr old, one 11 yr old)

4. Occupation:  IT Support

5. How you learned about NarniaWeb: Shortly after the Andrew Adamson adaptation was announced, I stumbled into NarniaWeb. Thankfully, I left the wardrobe door open all these years so that I could easily come back, as everyone knows that it would be very silly to shut oneself into a wardrobe, or in this case out of one.

6. How old were you when you first read the Chronicles:  23 if memory serves

7. How many times have you read the Chronicles:  Annually for the past 20 years, and a few times previous to that (somebody is doing some math right now on my age, lol).

8. Favorite of the Chronicles: A Horse and His Boy (Shasta's encounter with Aslan in the mountains always makes my eyes water)

9. Hobbies and/or interesting things about you:  Camping, Hiking, Rock Climbing, Snowboarding, Scuba Diving, and I have a Masters degree in Jewish Studies.

Fun Fact: Our house is oddly divided with two entrances and one bedroom which adjoins the two halves, a bedroom we like to call "The Room Between the Worlds".

Lost in the woods and weary he looked into the night sky and a voice spoke to him, "As long as the moon shines, I will be with you. The day the moon no longer shines, you will be with Me."

Welcome back to the forum, @meldred! I'm glad things have improved for you over the years.

Ditto re Shasta's powerful and revealing encounter with Aslan in the mountains. What an amazingly moving scene.

Love the name of your 'inbetween room'. That's great! Smile

I hope we see you around the forum in the days to come.

Btw, your avatar is beautiful! That moon, wow!
