There's so much beauty around us
With just two eyes to see
That everywhere I go, I'm looking--
Rich Mullins, "Here in America"
Sometimes I have been unwise
I've been undone by what I'm unsure of
But because of You
And all that You went through
I know that I have never been unloved--
Michael W. Smith, "Never Been Unloved (Bruce's Song)"
Unaware, I have been unfair
I've been unfit for blessings from above
But even I can see
The sacrifice You made for me
To show that I have never been unloved
Its because of You
And all that You went through
I know that I have never been unloved--Same as above
Something brought you here, Flynn Rider. Fate, Destiny--
--a horse Tangled
You broke my smolder.--Flynn Rider, Tangled
And these are a couple of longish ones from The Last Unicorn
You know, I really think you could stop slaying dragons for the Lady Amalthea. If five of them haven't moved her, one more isn't likely to do it. Try something else.
"But what's left on earth that I haven't tried?" Princes Lír demanded. "I have swum four rivers, each in full flood and none less than a mile wide. I have climbed seven mountains never before climbed, slept three nights in the Marsh of the Hanged Men, and walked alive out of that forest where the flowers burn your eyes and the nightingales sing poison. I have ended my betrothal to the princess I had agreed to marry--and if you don't think that was a heroic deed, you don't know her mother. I have vanquished exactly fifteen black knights waiting by fifteen fords in their black pavilions, challenging all who come to cross. And I've long lost count of the witches in the thorny woods, the giants, the demons disguised as damsels; the glass hills, fatal riddles, and terrible tasks; the magic apples, rings, lamps, potions, swords, cloaks, boots, neckties and nightcaps. Not to mention the winged horses, the basilisks and sea serpents, and all the rest of the livestock." . . .
" . . . Then perhaps the Lady Amalthea is not to be won by great deeds."
I am a hero. It is a trade, no more, like weaving or brewing, and like them it has its own tricks and knacks and small arts. There are ways of perceiving witches, and of knowing poison streams; there are certain weak spots that all dragons have, and certain riddles that hooded strangers tend to set you. But the true secret of being a hero lies in knowing the order of things. The swineherd cannot already be wed to the princess when he embarks on his adventures, nor can the boy knock on the witch's door while she is away on vacation. The wicked uncle cannot be found out and foiled before he does something wicked. Things must happen when it is time for them to happen. Quests may not simply be abandoned; prophecies may not be left to rot like unpicked fruit; unicorns may go unrescued for a long time, but not forever. The happy ending cannot come in the middle of the story.

"Kalila!"
"Boring!" Great quotes!
I stumbled across some wonderful Chesterton quotes a few weeks ago, many of which I'd never seen before.
"A good novel tells us the truth about its hero; but a bad novel tells us the truth about its author."
"A room without books is like a body without a soul." (Amen! 1,000 times; amen!)
"There is a great deal of difference between an eager man who wants to read a book and the tired man who wants a book to read."
"A yawn is a silent shout." (I find this one amusing because I yawn a lot. )
"And when it rains on your parade, look up rather than down. Without the rain, there would be no rainbow."
"If I can put one touch of rosy sunset into the life of any man or woman, I shall feel that I have worked with God."
"Lying in bed would be an altogether perfect and supreme experience if only one had a colored pencil long enough to draw on the ceiling."
"The object of opening the mind, as of opening the mouth, is to shut it again on something solid."
"The traveler sees what he sees, the tourist sees what he has come to see."
"The word 'good' has many meanings. For example, if a man were to shoot his grandmother at a range of five hundred yards, I should call him a good shot, but not necessarily a good man."
"There are no rules of architecture for a castle in the clouds."
And now, a selection of random quotes from various books, movies, shows, etc...
It was queer about words. You thought you knew exactly what some very common word meant, and then--somebody would say it with a peculiar intonation that gave it a brand-new value. She had been hearing the word 'friend' all her life. It wasn't much of a word, really; didn't mean anything ... It was quite another word now, perhaps because it had been spoken so tenderly, so protectingly. What a lovely word--friend.
"God was not punishing me by letting the black knight knock me down--he was only withholding the special gift of victory which it had always been within his power to bestow."
"But, my poor Lance, to have given up your glory and not to get anything back! When you were a sinful man you were always victorious, so why should you always be beaten when you were heavenly? And why are you always hurt by the things you love? What did you do?"
"I knelt down in the water of Mortoise, Jenny, where he had knocked me--and I thanked God for the adventure."
Bikes deserve to be ridden, beaches deserve to be sprawled upon, pizza deserves to be eaten and sauce spilled everywhere, vacations deserve to be taken, next door neighbors’ kiddy pools deserve to be swum in, footballs deserve to be kicked over the house and not stuck in the phone lines. Taco Bell deserves to be visited on a regular basis. Frozen french fries deserve to be cooked in the oven and irresponsibly burned to death. Summer deserves to be fun. And fun deserves to be had.
This world is crazy. So what if scenarios like these are crazy enough to be real?
"Business is when a man with money meets a man with experience. The man with the experience gets the money, and the man with the money gets the experience."
"The most interesting thing about a man is the part you don't know about...the part you have to guess."
"There isn't much difference between scared and cautious. You are looking at three very cautious individuals."
... and here's a few from real life. Our family vacation, to be exact.
Dee: "Creativity: use with caution."
Dee: "Never underestimate the power of a well placed movie quote."
My dad: "All hat, no cowboy."
My dad: "Our room is reserved."
Dee: "It's nice to hear that it's well mannered."
Dee: "I feel like I can't sing very well with my sunglasses on."
Dee: "I'm dying! I'm sure I'm dying! If one could die of laughter, I'd be a zombie right now!"
Guy who worked in an information office: "This book is the best thing since floatable soap!"
Me, playing tour guide at a battlefield: "They chased them all the way from here back to... [pause as I try to think of a landmark my family would recognize] the visitor center."
Dee, deadpan: "Where they got a map and a free tour."
Me: "There's a hair in my drink... not so loud; everyone'll want one, eh?"
Dee: "Do I have a pulse?"
Me: "You're still talking, so I would assume so."
Dee: "It doesn't hurt to be too cautious!"
[Scene: driving through a construction zone. I have just taken a drink of water, when my dad spots a caution sign...]
My dad: "Oh look! If you hit a worker, you win $10,000!"

Grandpa: 10,000 comedians out of work and you think you can make it in the big time.
For these next two, I was driving myself to the airport with my grandparents in their car. I grew up in a small town with 30mph speed limits. This is only my second time driving at 65mph on a three lane highway. It's also rush hour and I've never driven in that.
Grandpa: Somebody needs to get out and punch that guy. (referring to a guy in a large truck who was blocking my view so I couldn't pull out)
Grandpa: slow down, it's 20mph here and you're going 60.
Me: no I'm not. I'm going 20.
Grandpa: you're still going too fast. This place is just crawling with airport police.
Me: Don't worry, I won't cut across two lanes of traffic this time. (which I had done the first time I drove on a three lane highway)
Grandpa: If you creep a little closer, you can just hook your bumper over the ball hitch on that car, turn off the engine, and save on gas.
Grandpa: slow down, SLOW DOWN!
Me: Grandpa, I know what a red light is. I haven't wrecked the car yet.
Grandpa: So what you're saying is, most people would have wrecked three or four by now in this situation? Well, don't you deserve a little Orphan Annie ribbon. Pin a rose on your nose.
(My grandpa thinks he's a comedian)

Always laugh when you can. It is cheap medicine.
