From thursday-Tuesday we experienced some very odd weather in perth. It looked like July out side(storms and all) but the humidity suggested overwise. I had to run to the bus stop scared that I may be hit my lightening and than run home with the same fear. Some of the loudest thunder I have ever heard in my life, every night for 5ish days as well.

Technically snow did fall from the sky Jo, but it was the kind where you have a few flakes just hanging out in the air dancing around and never landing. ;))

We're supposed to have more snow today, but very little accumulation to speak of. However, we're supposed to have very high wind so the winter storm warnings are out in force. I plan to stay bundled up inside.

Jealous of your thunder IlF, not gonna lie. ;)

I was at work, and it was so loud I thought something had happened in the carpark like a explosion of a car. Since I don' expect thunder at 5 in the afternoon, especially at this time of year.

There is something fascinating about thunderstorms - as long as they're watched from a safe location! It'll be a few months before we have them here.

The big snowstorms continue to miss us. Tuesday about 2 inches (50mm) fell just before rush hour. I had an appointment that took 15 minutes to get to - but about 70 minutes for the return trip in the snow. I saw way too many cars on the shoulder with fender benders or air bags deployed. This winter has been so light on snow that we've forgotten how to drive in it.

how much snow do northeners have to get before they need to shovel their roofs?...My first guess was about 8", but then I checked online and sites suggest 6". What do the Minnesotans say? Or other northerners?

Despite growing up here I have few memories of dealing with this (or watching my parents do it). Maybe it's because we get less snow than in those lake-effect areas (our average is around 60 inches/1530mm per season). So here the risk is usually more from snow dams forming rather than actual collapse (except for the former Metrodome; that stadium roof collapsed more than once after a big snowfall).

I do remember my father occasionally using a snow rake after a big snowfall. Raking is safer because you can do it from the ground. ;))

I checked the website of a local company, which recommends removal at 6 inches - again depending on liquid content of the snow and whether nature will remove it for you with sunlight or warmer weather.

That site did have an interesting tidbit I didn't know about: shoveling gradually removes those little granules on your shingles, which are there to protect against solar UV radiation and provide extra flame-retardant properties.

EDIT: Here's a popular video of a snow train in Canada.

But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.

While the northeast part of the USA is getting buried in tons of snow, we here in KS are getting another winter heat wave. 65F yesterday, 74F today, 68F tomorrow, a few more days of mid 60Fs after that, and then a return to much more normal temps this time of year (mid 40Fs). Not complaining about the days we're enjoying now, but I'm hoping this isn't a sign of what this summer is going to be like.

We are *still* on a roller coaster! Today sunny, 55F. We had snow 3 days ago and it's forecasted again on Monday. But we are enjoying these sunny days!

After a series of very warm days, we had a south westerly change, and on Friday it was really cold - unfortunate for the national holiday, but I went to an outdoor event well bundled up as if it was winter instead of summer.

There, shining in the sunrise, larger than they had seen him before, shaking his mane (for it had apparently grown again) stood Aslan himself.

65F yesterday, 74F today, 68F tomorrow...

Boy did we enjoy the last few days. Yesterday was a good deal warmer than 68F. ;)) I didn't hear what it actually got up to or if we set any records, but I think I broke a sweat for the first time this year yesterday. Spent the majority of the day outside at the farm running around with my son. :D

Some of the loudest thunder I have ever heard in my life[

Yikes! I do enjoy a good thunderstorm, but certain claps can be ear-deafening. Yowheee! I remember one huge clap a few years back that came out of nowhere, so to speak, and I think it made everyone in our immediate area involuntarily leap on high in sudden fright. ;))

it was the kind where you have a few flakes just hanging out in the air dancing around and never landing. ;))

I know the kind you mean—pretty, but I can simply cannot figure out where they go, because they never seem to hit the ground. ;))

Tuesday about 2 inches (50mm) fell just before rush hour. I had an appointment that took 15 minutes to get to - but about 70 minutes for the return trip in the snow.

Unbelievable how even a bit of snow, when we haven't had it for awhile, causes so much havoc. And, wow, that traveling time difference is quite astounding. (Glad you stayed safe!)

Snow rake: good idea! I saw a video on this just the other day. Adding the 'slide' is brilliant. ;))

Love that 'invisible' train plowing through the Canadian snow. ;))

Are you receiving that snow today, ramagut?

Pity, coracle, that the inclement weather arrived just for the national holiday. (Murphy's Law, eh? :p )

Those temps are quite something, fantasia, enjoy! 'Though they sound very odd way up here when we're sitting around -7C/19.4F, plus a windchill, with about a foot of snow on the ground all around. ;))

We had snow and freezing rain yesterday. I was supposed to go out of town, but am sure glad I decided to stay put. Flurries are forecast much of the week, with a touch of sun (I hardly remembered how to spell the word, we haven't seen it in so long ;) ), and turning much colder at the end of the week.

We had a lovely day of 65F yesterday. Today's high was 50F--that was first thing this morning. We're at 31F now. Freezing rain expected tonight. Maybe some snow flurries but no accumulation.

johobbit. I think I saw the same video on the snow rake. looked like something we could have used last year. So far this years snowfall has been enough to annoy, but hardly worth warming up the snowblower.
We did get about two, to three inches today, along with some freezing rain. strange thing about this sort is how one side of the car is glare ice that needs to be chipped away, but the other has snow with a hard crust. Not that I want to chip off the whole car mind you. #:-s

We've been having constant snow-falls this winter! for the first half of the week it snows and it below freezing...and then the second half of the week the temperature goes up and it all turns into slush 8-| It's super annoying. But at least we get a lot of snow, and my grandma is very happy because that means the ground will be less dry in the summer and she won't have to water her garden as much :D

We could use some of that snow here. We're way behind average and soon they might start using the 'd' word (drought).

We're almost two months past the winter solstice and the sun angle and day lengths are increasing rapidly. But that doesn't mean winter's over yet. Temperatures this weekend may approach -20F (-29C) even in southern Minnesota.

In fact, it was about this time in 1996 when the small town of Tower, in the northeast part of the state, set the all-time state record low temperature of -60F (-51C); the Twin Cities only got down to -32F (-36C). The story goes that the official thermometer in the town of Embarrass (which has something of a weather rivalry with Tower) broke but that an unofficial one (certified by the manufacturer but not the NWS) got down to -64F (-53C) which would have been the record had it been official.

But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.

We have finally received some winter weather! It snowed today and it's still on the ground because it's so cold! Our temperature is supposed to be in the single digits tonight and in the morning with wind chill -10F to -15F! I may skip church tomorrow due to the temperature and bad roads.

Early last week they predicted we would get snow this weekend, but the chance wasn't that great. Every day I checked, the likelyhood of snow kept going down and as of yesterday it was 0%.
So much to my great surprise I checked the weather this afternoon and low and behold, 80% chance of sleet and snow tonight with up to 2" of accumulation. :P
