Ah, in 6 months we'll be commenting on either the heat (here) or the cold (Down Under).
And in the months between, nobody will be commenting on the weather because it will be pleasant and we'll have nothing to complain about.
Touche, fantasia. Though nice weather also means we'll be out enjoying it rather than complaining about it.
After several days with temperatures never getting above 0F/-17C, today is a blistering 10F/-12C with a light powdery snow falling. But blizzard warnings are up south and west of here as winds gusting over 54 mph (87 km/hr) are driving the snow around and reducing visibilities to near zero.
I have noticed once it gets to 35C a any amount of degrees above feel the same, heat wise. Does it get like that at any of the extremely cold temperatures?
I think anything below about -15F/-26C feels about the same - but it's all about the wind. The Weather Channel did an experiment which showed that 0C with a very slight breeze has much more cooling effect than -15C with no wind. Any wind when it's below 0F really draws the heat from the body and makes all the difference. (I think it's similar to summer humidity. 40C is hot no matter what, but if there's high humidity it's just brutal - your body can't cool off at all).
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
If I may add a little to stargazer's lesson on wind, and temps. With the current cool down we can include the lack of moisture in the air. For myself, and some others it results in some nasty dryness of the skin. Moisturizers, and lotions are in high demand by those who have to work outside this time of year.
Keeping a watch for those who are going on the road tomorrow. We see a lot of nasty traffic in the news this evening, with video of some crack-ups from frosty roads. Wind is gusting in the upper 20s mph, to lower 30,s in some places.
Winds over 50mph/80 km/hr yesterday created whiteout conditions, even in the metro area. Hundreds of car crashes resulted.
The Weather Channel is having some fun, playing video of that egg-frying in Perth side-by-side with the egg-freezing incident here.
The egg frying is also available on youtube - now isn't that a tasty sandwich?
In contrast, here's an egg-freezing clip from last winter in International Falls (self-proclaimed as 'the Nation's Icebox'), when it was -40.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
^ Many of the youtube comments are about how much salt he put on it. Since my family have a history of high-blood pressure, I have grown up having minimal salt on everything. I hate anything over salted......yuck
@ fantasia bring on march(mid march, since it is still hot here at the begining-may).
@Wagga this medication has cleared up my back. I usually go with QV for wash since it is suitable for all skin types and it doesn't irritate the skin.
@star we had some bad humid days a week or so back but it has gone back to perths usual dry heat now(thank goodness I must say). Most partks of Queensland are very bad for humidity. If you ever visit i would suggest the middle months of the year if you don't like such weather.
whiteout conditions in the Fargo/Moorhead area as well yesterday from what I heard from an auto mechanic there. He said you couldn't see ten feet in front of you.
thankfully it "warms-up" this week to the mid teens, with minimal chance of snow. Some stations are actually being bold, and predicting mid 20'sF by Friday.
*chuckles at the extreme temperature egg fun*

True, true.
It was only a couple of days ago that we warmed up to it's-finally-okay-to-be-outside, as in -5 to -10C/23 - 14F, instead of frigid-freeze-your-skin-off with a strong wind chill. With this warm-up, more snow has arrived, freshening everything up. Lovely! However, tonight the temps are dropping again so that by the pre-dawn hours, it will be -30C/-22 and a wind chill on top of that. But by the end of the week, we shall be up to more manageable air again. Yo-yo winter weather.

Meanwhile, it's supposed to be in the 50Fs by this weekend here. *happy dance* But that's after the next round of snow coming through tomorrow night.
Did you get that snow, fantasia?
We're expecting a bit of the white stuff tonight, but it's not nearly so cold anymore. One can at least be outside comfortably now, although the wind is nippy today. And this weekend we are hitting a couple of degrees above freezing, which is very unusual for January weather here. But then, dropping cold on Monday again.
A couple of nights ago, it was quite frigid, but I bundled up to see the conjunction of Venus and Mercury, then take a stab at spotting Comet Lovejoy (a successful venture!). We have had so much cloud here lately, that what a treat for one night, anyway, to be as clear as clear could be.

We did indeed. I figured we wouldn't as it went from 30% chance to 20% chance, to a slight chance. But when I woke up the next morning there was a fresh dusting of powder on the ground. Meanwhile tomorrow is going to be pushing 60F. I plan to be outside as much as possible (which may be somewhat difficult, but we'll see what happens).
Actually hit upper 30'sF today. Unfortunatly it was accompanied by high winds. Was walking through some woods hunting the elusive tree rat, but still had to bundle up. Most of the wind was carrying over the treetops thankfully, but whenever I walked near the treeline, or down a logging road it made it'self known.
Supposed to be a little cooler tomorrow, but not so windy. Maybe I will have a little better luck.
Whew, we are definitely having real summer this year - today it got to 33.4 Celcius. It is currently 28, and it's nearly 7 pm (NZ Summer Time).
I have sat inside melting most of the afternoon - perhaps I should have been hosing down the garden so I could splash myself a bit.
There, shining in the sunrise, larger than they had seen him before, shaking his mane (for it had apparently grown again) stood Aslan himself.
"...when a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor's stead, the Table would crack and Death itself would start working backwards."
We had a glorious day of 72F/22C
So yeah... spent a good chunk of this afternoon outdoors cleaning up the backyard and washing the dog. It'll go back to normal winter temps starting tomorrow but I sure am enjoying a taste of spring today.
Wow, that warm in February, fantasia! I know of some firewood I'd use should it ever get that warm here this winter.
Though we've had quite a string of above-average days (current high is up to 24F/-4C). We've not hit 40F (4C) yet but have come close. We seem to go in stretches of really warm (and usually cloudy) weather alternating with colder than average periods. But we're way behind in snowfall this season with nary a hint of anything significant on the horizon for the next week or so.

That's a warm one, coracle!
And your day sounded very, very pleasant, fantasia.

Ditto here, pretty much right on with our cold spells being longer than any melting/warm-ish spells. But while we are mostly covered in the white stuff, we, too, are way behind in snowfall. In fact, we received more snow in November than in December and January put together.
Many days have flurries, but no accumulation there. C'mon winter, do your thing!
