I love snow but I'm not ready for winter yet. I'd prefer if it would wait a little bit longer. I prefer to ease into season changes. A couple of inches would be okay. I don't want 8-10 inches this early. Not that it matters what I want ... the weather will do what it wants without any regard for what people prefer. :P

And so it begins... ;))

The predictions for this storm total keep going up, though it looks like the snow band will be quite narrow so it could move north or south just a bit and the amount we get would change dramatically.

It also means areas an hour or two north or south of here may not get much at all.

One model - which the meteorologist expressed doubts about - calls for 17-21 inches (430-535mm) right over the metro area by the time it's all said and done (Tuesday morning). Most other models are now calling for 10-14 inches (255-355mm). Accumulations also depend on whether we get freezing rain first. Apparently this is going to be more of that wet, heavy 'heart attack' snow.

And thundersnow is a definite possibility.

Un-official total for my back yard is 12 inches. Nice heavy, and enough to choke the snow-blower several times. The top ten inches were not so bad, but the bottom was almost all slush.
There is supposed to be more falling tonight, but hoping it is not near so much, nor so heavy. But even if we get nothing more I had to leave some because it was getting too dark, so with the falling temps all that slush will be ice.

We came in at about half your total, Puddleglum, 6 or 7 inches. But towns up near St. Cloud get the Golden Snow Shovel award this time, with totals approaching 18 inches (455mm).

I was out and about today, and while we talk a lot about people relearning winter driving with the first storm of the season, I was reminded that it's also necessary to remember how to walk when the sidewalks and parking lots are covered with ice and frozen snow ridges. ;)) Go at your summer pace and you just might meet the ground (avoided but just barely).

The season's first subzero F (below -17C) temperatures are expected in the next couple days; these temps are more typical for December rather than mid-November.

Oh look, it's snowing again. ;))

First few flakes tried coming down today; it was more like wood ash than snow. Then the sun came out and the roses kept blooming. The snow line is creeping down the mountains, though. Happy shovelling!

Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away ... my days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle

We had some unusually humid weather in perth a couple of days ago. Perth is usually a dry heat(which is much better imo). Than we dropped 10 degrees C the next day. It went for 37 to 27 to 23 today. Not unusual for November, but annoying because after 37 I was prepared for it to stay hot. Though I don't know why I am complaining I hate it when it is above 32.

The NWS predicted a sizable chance of snow yesterday. TECHNICALLY they were correct as we awoke to a few ice pellets that were visible on our neighbor's roof (and melted an hour later).
But this morning we had about a 20% chance for snow, and woke up to a good half inch on the ground, and lovely flakes falling from the sky. All in all we got between 2-3". I haven't heard an official total yet.
Tried to take the kiddos out to play in it, but my daughter was unimpressed (hey, she's 1 month old :P ) and my son was not sure what to make of it. He kind of bumbled around in it for a bit before he was ready to come back in. ;)) Maybe if we get a chance to take him sledding he'll appreciate it more. ;)

Bringing the kids out to play in the snow sounds like so much fun, fantasia. I remember doing it with little nieces and nephews, once upon a time (now they're all teenagers, or older *sigh* ;) )

We got a couple inches more of snow overnight, bringing our monthly total to about 10 inches (255mm). That's about our monthly average for the month of November.

It's clear outside now, and about 10F (-12C) just after local midnight. Tonight's low should stay just above 0F (-17C).

Our current temperature, shortly after noon local time, is 17F (-8C), which ties a record of the coldest high temperature for this date. (Our average high is still about 38F/3C). Our current string of continuous time below freezing will end this weekend at 12 days, which is the second longest such stretch on record for November. (Winter is another story; it's almost always below freezing ;)) )

The big story though is the lake-effect snow in western New York - even for them, this is remarkable. Some areas are reporting 65 inches (1650mm) of new snow in just last couple days, with up to 24 inches (610mm) more possible before the wind finally shifts tomorrow. The pictures are pretty amazing.

It's possible temperatures could approach 60F (15C) there by early next week, triggering some incredible snow melt. (This is probably the strangest thing for me to grasp. When the first real snow of the season arrives, it stays till spring. It's not going to get to 60F here again for months. On the other hand, that 65 inches of snow is about what we get during an entire winter).

I have been watching the news out of Buffalo N.Y. these past few days stargazer. I have family out there, and am grateful that they are not in harms way.
I was watching the local news, and they were interviewing a woman who had moved out of Minnesota thinking her snow troubles were done =))
she related that a local Wal Mart had customers snowed in, and could not leave the store. So the manager broke out the camping gear, and people were apparently tenting, and watching the big screen TV's. so long as the T.P. lasts they should be good.
Out here in mid-Minnesota we have had a relatively mild two days with temps in the mid 40s F. The real fun will be tomorrow when the temps will be back into the 20'sF with high winds. Then there is the ice that will greet us on the way to work with all the snow melt from the past two days.

Oh bushfire season is coming up. I don't really know how much destruction snow storms make but I would think generally bush fires would cause more.

I think some part of new south wales had a heat wave (No people from the uk it was not 28 C), it was over 40c for a number of days. Western Australia gets most of it's hotter weather mid-December to mid-march.

I'm not sure about fire, but snow can be deadly. Depends heavily on how much you get... it can cause road accidents, roof collapses, and if it's bad enough cars can get trapped on the highway and people can freeze to death when they run out of gas for the heater. Snow isn't usually nearly as bad as ice storms though... they do everything a snowstorm does, except you can't shovel it away. It also makes the trees brittle and top heavy, so they fall. You have lots of downed power lines as well. How bad a storm is depends on a lot of factors. In Buffalo's case there is a real threat of flooding and roof collapse now that temperatures are warming up... all that snow has to melt. The problem is though, even if it rains it won't melt it away, but rather make it heavier because the snow will soak it up like a sponge... so if people can't get their roofs cleared off there is a very real possibility they will collapse. There's so much snow though... people can hardly get out of their front door... Fire is probably faster and more widespread destruction... snow and ice are slow, but can be brutal...

Yes, that is us. Right in the middle of it & so close to where last year's bushfires were that the helicopter transport for last April's Royal visit plus media flew overhead of our house. No, they didn't drop in, which would have been catastrophic. :-o Yes, there have been bushfires lower down the Blue Mountains than they were last year. And as you have observed, summer ain't over yet. Thank goodness for Southerly Busters and refreshing storms. Not enough rain, though.

@Wolf Sounds horrible. The thought about not being able to get out your front door is horrible. Plus if the temp rises enough the snow would melt quick causing flooding.

@WW summer has barely started. I found out Sydney actually has more rain than London. I am sure that is because it has less lots of heavy rain, where as in London it just drizzles.

Fortunately, the average snowfall is not usually that bad or nearly that dangerous :) The word ice storm makes everyone cringe around here though.

We are getting unseasonably warm temps here in the middle of two cold snaps. It's in the 60's (F). I don't like it this warm at this time of year... But we're due for 6 inches of snow Wed.
