Ah Digs! Are you joining the ranks as a Marsh-Wiggle? I guess I have been too slack in my responcibilities of late
I have absolutely no idea what you're saying
How did your drive go down to Columbus, DiGs? I hope the road wasn't too slick yet ...
Quite uneventfully. It rained heavily the entire way. . . but that rain is supposed to turn into snow shortly.

Ahh...nice to be back in one of my favorite threads (though I see it is on its second installment now. Most excellent!)
I've been enjoying quite a winter here in Upstate New York so far. We've had a couple good snow storms, a handful of decent lake effect snow events and are on the cusp of our second major arctic outbreak in less than week, both of which are challenging records and giving us a taste of weather unseen in many years.
For example, wind chills Friday were near -30ºF, only to be outdone in the forecast wind chills for Tuesday morning of -35ºF. (Note: though I love the cold, I shudder to think of those who are homeless having to endure such cold when wind chills this low can cause frostbite in 10 minutes.) Hard to believe, two days after and two days before these intense cold snaps, its currently in the mid 40s F after 10pm
As I hinted to, our snow has been great this year and we are already over 60" on the year, which is nearing our average yearly snowfall and already a foot more than we got in all of 2011-2012.

Did I mention humidity before? yes I did and well it was horrible today. Entering work at 8 and than leaving at 5 basically running into a wall).
Well, it currently feels like it's about -25 F / -32 C here in Columbus right now. We didn't get as much snow as was predicted, but it sure is chilly.
My university actually closed due to the cold! Closing the university is something that has happened one other time since 2007. That was in January of 2009, when we'd gotten 8 inches of snow overnight with another 8 inches expected during the day.
Either way. . . . it's cold.
If the uni closed today, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it closed tomorrow as well, when the temps are supposed to drop even lower.

Actual temp here in KS: -2F/-18C. Feels like: -15F/-26C. High today: 15F/-9C. The good news for us is, this is our coldest day, it should get back above freezing tomorrow. In fact, we're going to be pushing 50F/10C by Friday. Stay warm all of my northerner and east coast friends!
Welcome back to the weather thread, Narnian_Storm! Nice to have a professional among us.
It's warm and toasty here... -16F/-27C with a windchill below -40 at 11am. Our heat went out again last night so it was a bit cool in here this morning. Hopefully it's fixed for good this time.
I'm not sure how cold it got overnight, but I stepped outside for a very brief look at the stars at 10pm last night, and it was already -18F/-28C.
That's a bit nippy even for polar bears like me.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
The temp has been plummeting all morning long. It was 2 F / -17C when I woke up, and now it's -5 F /-21 C with wind chills making it feel like -30 F / -34 C
You cannot be outside for a long time at all without feeling like your skin is on fire, but at this point, I'm interested to see just how low we can go
I really wanna know if we'll have school tomorrow.
EDIT: It's official. . . . no school tomorrow either

As an Australian who has only traveled overseas in that countries summer I can't imagine how cold it is. It is around 32c here today. If we add your temp of -21 and mine and divide my two(5.5c) and that would give you the low average on a winter day here.
The weather has been gorgeous today. About 23-25C max. On the news they have been reporting that there have been huge storms in UK and a rare polar vortex with temperatures plunging to -51F. I hope it is really not as bad as that, and also hope everyone is okay.
Meanwhile there has been some stormy weather down Antarctica way. Two ships are stuck in sea ice, about 4 metres thick, including a Chinese ship. A US ice-breaker has left Sydney en-route to free them. The Aurora Australis is on its way back to Hobart to drop off passengers from the original Russian ship.
The arctic blast has come to Upstate New York now. We very nearly completed a 50ºF drop in temperature over 24 hours. At 3:30am yesterday, we were at 50ºF. At 3:30 am this morning, it was 2ºF. It is now -2ºF and wind chills around the region are in the -20s and -30s. It is rare for us to get this cold, actually, since the Great Lakes tend to modify the bitter cold air that comes down from Canada.
Speaking of the Great Lakes, while it is not snowing here, some impressive lake effect is forecast, with up to 5 feet of new snow by tomorrow. Blizzard warnings are up for a few counties in western New York, including the Buffalo metro area. I am trying to remember if I have ever seen the NWS in Buffalo issue a blizzard warning for lake effect before...

And for a winter-lovin' hobbit. So grand to see you here again, Narnian_Storm! And, wow, 5' of lake effect snow. Beauties. Stay safe!

Ugh! Any relief in sight, IlF?
It's so interesting to read how far spread this deep freeze is across the North American continent!
Glad you're enjoying some weather you like, wagga. Around +25, eh? Our temperature this morning was -25C/-13F. However, the windchill was -40 (which is the same in both C & F)! Another bitterly cold day here, with a touch of relief tomorrow (oh, would you look at that, the windchill tomorrow will be a balmy -29C/-20F instead ), but on the weekend, the temperature bounds up to 5C/41F with rain. Noooooooo! It should not be raining in January! Thankfully we have abundant snow, so if it is not an all-day rain, the white stuff shouldn't all wash away. I do wish it were a few degrees colder so as to be snow, though.
EDIT: Yesterday we were to head into the city for an appointment, but with the flash freeze in the early morning hours, we were all iced in here.

Snow Day! Er..um Cold Day! It just doesn't have the same ring. Either way it means no subbing for me. Our high is supposed to be 1 F today. It is negative 6 now.
I have heard that there is a temperature where it is too cold to snow. Does anyone know if that is true?

I've heard that too, Twigs, and wonder if it's actually true ...

... "very brief look" are the key words there as, yep, it is sadly too frigid to stay out for any decent length of time. Still, I stepped outside last night as well, for the clouds cleared as the evening went on, and it was crystal clear. The night sky was so glorious in all its wintry beauty.

*An exuberant fanfare and drum roll is heard*
Yes, it's above 0F (-17C) here this afternoon, after about 62 hours below zero. (That's nowhere near the record, which is close to 200 consecutive hours below zero).
Narnian_Storm, the Weather Channel has sent people to upstate New York to study and report on that lake-effect snow. We get snow here, but 5 feet at once is really remarkable! Our single-storm record is about 3, if I recall correctly.
As an Australian who has only traveled overseas in that countries summer I can't imagine how cold it is. It is around 32c here today.
If you have a free-standing freezer (as opposed to the one paired with your refrigerator), that runs at about -17 to -25C. The *high* temperature here yesterday wasn't that warm. But that freezer will give you a taste of what it's like here.
I have heard that there is a temperature where it is too cold to snow. Does anyone know if that is true?
Please correct me if I'm wrong, Narnian_Storm, but my understanding is that this is false. However, the colder it gets, the less moisture the air can hold (the dew point goes down), reducing the likelihood of precipitation. That's probably where that saying comes from.
This reminds me of a song by Da Yoopers, who hail from Michigan's Upper Peninsula, a place well-known for its own lake-effect snow. (Every place has its own weather jokes, and I recall one about the UP: It has 11 months of winter and 30 days of rain).
"My Car Won't Go" has a rather light-hearted 'answer' to the question:
I wake up in the morning and it's forty below
The weatherman tells me it's too cold to snow.
I look out the window and I know that he's lying.
My car's out of sight and the snow's still flying.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
@jo yes it is much better today. It is more of a dry heat. A decent summer temp of 28c.
@star I may just jump in my freezer to escape the heat some day but I wouldn't fit.
