Hey Olympics fans!
Competition started a few days ago, though the opening ceremonies were on Friday. While previous Olympics have occasionally been spread over multiple venues, this is the first time that two cities (Milan and Cortino) have equal billing, with the athletes spread among multiple locations during the opening ceremonies and both cities have an Olympic cauldron.
Did you watch the opening ceremonies? Are there specific sports you like to follow? How about other aspects of the games, such as Italian food or culture, or life in Italy?
Let's discuss!
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
Yes, I got up early (Australian EDST just before 6am) to watch the opening ceremonies. I've got to say they were much better than Paris opening ceremony from 2024. Whilst being good, I don't think they matched my favourite the Sydney 2000 opening ceremony. My highlight was seeing Andrea Bocelli sing Nessun Dorma.
I love watching most of the events in the Winter Olympics, I find it hard to pick a favourite though. I was just saying to my youngest child earlier today though, that I could imagine her doing the Luge when she gets older! And I wouldn't be able to bubble-wrap her!

@pete, I absolutely agree about the 2000 opening ceremony. Julie Anthony's performance of "Advance Australia Fair" still gives me goosebumps.
Andrea Bocelli's performance was awesome too.
The other day I watched Italian skater Francesca Lollobrigida come from behind to win gold in the 3000m speed skating. Her name seemed familiar; I'm old enough to remember the actress Gina Lollobrigida, who turns out to be the skater's great aunt.
Attention here focused on Lindsey Vonn's crash in her downhill ski race, in part because she hails from the Twin Cities and did some early training at local ski area Buck Hill.
(Not too surprisingly, Minnesota contributes a lot of athletes for winter sports, not only popular ones like skiing and hockey, but also ones like curling, which most of us only hear about each 4 years at the Olympics).
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
@stargazer, unfortunately I missed Lindsey Vonn, although I did hear about her devastating crash - I was quite impressed by her statement afterwards though! I was rather surprised that she even competed with a torn ACL, and I'm sorry to hear about the injuries she sustained in the crash. All the best to her on her recovery.
I'm currently (as I write this message) watching the Men's Freeski slopestyle - Final runs. Some of the jumps and turns those skiers do look absolutely terrifying! But it sure is impressive to watch at the same time. I've just been listening to them explain what the competitors are judged on too, they have an acronym DAVE, it stands for, Difficulty, Amplitude, Variety and Execution.
Ooohh... one of the skiers just fell too (the first one to do his second run), but he did not appear to injure himself too seriously. The second person just fell too!

I saw a small part of the ceremony... appreciate a little nod to the '80s and '90s.
I've since watched some of the women's snowboarding, the figure skating, and I even ended up watching the GB v Sweden curling match. Curling is really not a sport I know much about or watch, but I had to see the match through :p. When I'm not feeling too great in myself, sometimes it can help to distract myself by zoning into these games.
I haven't looked up the medal tables yet, actually... Let's see if Team GB have got any medals yet... 🙂 (EDIT: That'll be a no - oh no! 😧 Still time!)
