I thought the second episode of Person of Interest was overall much better than the pilot. There's still some dull dialogue at times but generally it flowed better and sounded more natural. I loved the opening credits montage - brilliant and informative. The characters are becoming more interesting. Mr Finch is proving to be a fascinating man, while Reese is less interesting but a great man of action. I feel that they need to better integrate the female detective into the series. Overall, Person of Interest is improving but it has a way to go.
Curiously, in Australia, the series is rated AV15+ (Adult Viewing) for Violence. Not even 24 (which was far more extreme) had a rating that high here!

I'm curious, in Terra Nova, does it ever explain how going into the past and living with dinosaurs doesn't create a paradox? Just curious... The previews looked good, but I don't think I'll have the time to watch it, that was just a nagging question in the back of my head.

I recently saw the pilot of Zooey Deschanel's 'New Girl.' It was pretty cute, cheesy, and funny. Doesn't seem like a show that can really go far, but is still entertaining. I did think that Deschanel's character was a little too crazy/abnormal/unordinary-for-"normal"-TV but it was a nice change and by the end of the episode I mostly got over it.

outlier, an explanation is given. Note these may be significant spoilers if you haven't seen it yet and intend to do so.

Spoiler
When they see the initial probe (on the pedestal), someone explains to the effect that "they never got a response so they knew this was an alternate world/reality."

However, this could be one of those Lost-type mysteries in that near the end of the pilot episode, the 2 Sixers are examining the rock drawings/carvings and make a comment about the real purpose of Terra Nova: the one who controls it controls the future. To me this sounds like the people in the future know it's the same world, and they're trying to use the colony to rewrite history to be more in their favor.

But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.

Terra Nova proves to be highly-predictable but still strangely enjoyable. Odd.

Narnian_Badger, I'm really looking forward to the next Sherlock mini-series. The teaser was minimal but spiked my interest. Not too keen on the poster, it's design is a bit blah.

Ditto this observation about Terra Nova, Warrior. The episode held few surprises but was still fun to watch.

I've caught up on the last couple episodes of Castle. Episode 4.4, "Kick the Ballistics," which aired October 10, had a familiar face (Francois Chau) playing the part of a Chinese mob boss. It took several seconds for me to recognize him as that man of many aliases, Pierre Chang etc, from those DHARMA orientation films on LOST.

And episode 4.5, "Eye of the Beholder," guest starred Michael Dorn, Lt. Worf from Star Trek: The Next Generation. (I was convinced from the beginning that one of the eventual red herrings -

the insurance investigator
- was in on things, but she wasn't. ;))

Please pardon the double post; it's been almost 2 weeks. ;))

Tonight's episode of Person of Interest (1.7, "Witness") included Michael McGlone guest starring as a police detective. He's probably best known as that guy who introduces the Geico commercials ("do woodchucks chuck wood?"). As a detective, his character wore suits (as in the commercials) and was immediately recognizable, but that distinctive voice was replaced by one less smooth, a little more gravelly, with the hint of a NYC accent.

Has anyone caught the new ABC series Once Upon a Time (which the network bills as "From the Writers of LOST")? I finally saw the pilot and think it's an interesting concept. It takes the idea of the movie Enchanted (mixing our 'real' world and that of fairy tales) and turns it on its head in a somewhat darker fashion. No more spoilers from me... ;)

No, I haven't seen Once Upon a Time but I've heard it's very good so far. I hope it hits Australian shores soon.
I've been catching up on Rubicon (5 episodes in). I'm really enjoying it so far, especially the first 3 episodes. It's an old school spy drama staring one of the guys from The Pacific miniseries (don't know his name). Intelligent scripts, quality acting, oodles of mystery and intrigue but quite slowly-paced. It's odd in the sense that it's set in modern times and yet it never feels modern. If you enjoy mystery and the spy genre and don't mind a lack of physical action (gun play, fighting, car chases etc.) then you'll probably enjoy it.

So, I was bored and reread this thread tonight. And something on page 37 stuck out at me, that I can't believe I missed before!

First off, as for Growing Pains vs Family Ties... I always loved both. Do most fans like only one or the other? Maybe I'm just weird.

As for Growing Pains, it just didn't speak to me; I couldn't sit through it. Boy meets world struck me as much better, although the first season wasn't as good as the rest. I think the show really hit its stride when Eric (Wil Friedle) started getting serious about school and not so ditsy.

Funny, I never thought of them as similar or contemporaries... even though I grew up with both. I would never have thought to compare them! I'd be more likely to compare Boy Meets World to The Wonder Years. (no, i'm not bringing that up cause Ben and Fred are brothers :p ) And even still, I don't know if that is the best choice for a comparison! ;))

As for the topic of Eric Matthews... did we watch the same show? :-
In seasons 1 & 2, Eric was vain and too obsessed with being popular. But he wasn't stupid... he was just average in the smarts department. (dumber than Cory and Morgan... yes. Dumber than Shawn? DUH! But still not stupid or ditzy) As time went on, Eric got ditzier and more stupid. But I will agree that he got FUNNIER as time went on.

Can you guys tell I've started rewatching the show? ;))
As a kid I loved all of the characters, especially Cory, Topanga, and Shawn. I think I flip-flopped when it came to who had the top slot as "my favourite". But when watching now? Shawn... definitely Shawn. =))

When they're little he's so funny; and through the whole series he is just such a complex character. (the kind that writers love to see and write!) And what a best friend! *melts* I just love all that he did for Cory... and even Topanga!

I have to say, I wish that Minkus had stuck around longer than a season or two, though. He was funny!

...........
I've also been rewatching another childhood favourite...
Are You Afraid of the Dark?

Then again... you can probably guess that, by a few hints:
1) the set I'm using
2) the fact that I'm the president of the Nweb (chatroom's) Midnight Society
-meaning I run the meetings
3) That all of the graphics I've made and posted in non-narnian (for about two pages) have been from it. :p
4) the fact that I introduced Rosie to it/can't stop talking about it =))

I feel like the biggest geek... in just a month or so of time, I have very nearly watched all seven seasons! :-o (only ten or so episodes to go! and no, I haven't been going in order)

..........
As for my regular current shows...

ones I'll be catching up on, through DVR:
Criminal Minds
Alphas

ones I can't remember if I DVR'd and/or finished or not:
Warehouse 13-think I finished them all, but unsure (Booky, sorry you were so disappointed! I was mad at things, for sure... but I didn't hate it)
Eureka-think I finished... except for the finale

ones I didn't DVR or finish:
Haven-I can probably catch some of them on hulu

Question... did Bones just start up again, or have I missed several episodes?

gazer- I saw the pilot for Once Upon a Time. I haven't seen the second episode yet. But I liked what I've seen so far. :)

Another one I'll be watching (probably on hulu) is one I think I remember seeing commericals for... but forgot about til Booky mentioned it in chat the other day:
Grimm. And I think I'll let said friend explain what it's about. ;))

Sorry this was such a long ramble! I hope you could understand it! I'm not even sure I can follow my train of thought! 8-| If I think of any other shows, I'll come back. And hopefully my brain will be back too. :P

Happy viewing, everyone!

I really liked Rubicon. Shame it was cancelled, it really hit its stride over the last half of the season. I would have enjoyed seeing how they handled the fallout from the finale.

I've been watching Once Upon a Time. I thought the pilot was very campy, almost painfully so in the fantasyland sections, but the parts of the story set in our world were strong enough that I didn't mind. The second episode dials back the camp to acceptable levels. I'm hoping it can keep getting decent ratings since I've been wanting a good fantasy show on network television again. Any of you who watched Stargate: Universe, Robert Carlyle is in this show playing Rumpelstiltskin and he is delightfully creepy and menacing.

When I've actually watched Grimm all the way through, I can give a better description of it, but for now it seems like Buffy, but with a dude. Also darker and with less humor.

First off, as for Growing Pains vs Family Ties... I always loved both. Do most fans like only one or the other? Maybe I'm just weird.

I grew up in the 80's, so this sort of hits close to home. Growing Pains is a fun little show from a bygone era and it's likely to have a stronger pull here because it starred Kirk Cameron in his youth (in which he played something of a rascal completely different from the person he is ;))). But I don't think GP ever really provided serious competition to Family Ties in the grand scheme of things. It was one of the most beloved sitcoms of the 80s and purportedly Ronald Reagan's favorite TV show B-) . Alex P. Keaton (Michael J. Fox) made the show great, although he obviously couldn't have done so on his own and had a great cast around him.

Like I said, I liked Growing Pains a lot, but if one puts it up beside Family Ties? No contest. :p

Agreed about the campiness in Once Upon A Time Bookwyrm. I figured it was there to emphasize the difference between the worlds. I've seen the second episode now and liked it. It's kind of a refreshing change from the usual TV fare so I hope it's around a while.

Speaking of campy, I grew up with the 60s Batman. 'Nuff said. ;))

I'm afraid I've only seen a few episodes of Growing Pains or Family Ties, so I don't have much to offer there. Though both are very 80s in flavor.

Same goes for The Wonder Years- I wonder what I was doing, TV show-wise, back in the 80s - but I did see more of that show than the other 2. Now when I see it however, I can't helping thinking, "There's the kid (Fred Savage) from The Princess Bride."

But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.

Ditto on the camp Bookwyrm. Although I did think Once Upon A Time is better than Enchanted on the whole "the evil queen is going to take away all happiness and transport you into our 'terrible' world" front. Somehow after I watched the pilot I thought it would be the end of the fairytale world, but I liked how the second (and probably the rest of the episodes for that matter) episode flashbacked between worlds. Looking forward to the rest of the season (although what's going to happen after everything is fixed?).

I did decide to watch Grimm's pilot as well. Which was basically the trailer expanded to 45 minutes ;)) Seemed pretty interesting, only I thought the end scene felt somewhat tacked on. Great effects/make-up too! I'll probably end up following it

... which seems strange to me as a person who doesn't follow TV until it comes to DVD finally picking up on two shows this season
