Thranduil, father of Legolas, comes into this story.
Any suggestions for who ought to play him?
Someone who looks like he could have been the father of Orlando Bloom?

hmmm, that's a tough one!
I can't think of anyone who looks anything like Orlando Bloom! lol!
thinking.....

Even though the rumors weren't true, I still want James McAvoy I just think he'd fit the character well. Although I was thinking Ewan McGregor might do well the other day...but thinking again maybe not. I think I saw in an article that they're looking at more unknown actors.
Hmmm...well at least Thranduil wouldn't really have to look much older than Legolas...but I have no idea

James Mcavoy is a great actor, and I believe that he could pull off Bilbo, but he doesn't look like Bilbo!

Well, I guess not a whole lot but I just think he would get the character, especially with the way he played Tumnus, peaceful and hospitable, yet brave too.
I was wondering though, do you think they'll have Bilbo be played younger, like the age Frodo was, or the age he was in beginning of FotR? If they play him younger and have reference that they were the same ages when they started their quests it would make sense...but then you have him looking older in FotR.

my guess is that they will have Bilbo younger, especially since they are not using Ian Holm to play Bilbo again!

A news release, but ... what about Beorn??? He better not be left out. I mean, in terms of the overarching storyline he could be let go, but he's such a fascinating character. And what's with that female woodland Elf, Itaril?
Why do they have to change an already great tale?!

Bah! I just stopped by to post that Jo, but you beat me to it .
Beorn could already be cast. Or this could be just a short list of the Casting Call. With two movies there is little reason to leave out Beorn. And I do believe that Del Toro has mentioned his inclusion in an interview not too long ago (he's the kind of character Del Toro likes).
I don't really mind the addition of a female Elf with a speaking role to balance the gender factor a wee bit. I'm more concerned with possible subtractions. Itaril is most likely a character that will appear in scenes already requiring Elves. I doubt she's going to be a member of The Quest .

EDIT: ATTENTION ALL HOBBIT FANS:
Wild Internet Rumours strike again. This just in from theonering.net:
Update: After touching base with more of our contacts, we’ve been notified that this is not a valid list of lead roles and, in fact, some of the roles listed in the links are not relevant. Stay tuned here for more casting information as we get it, and rest assured we will follow every new story to confirm whether or not it is legit.

No objection to an added female elf here...until we see what role she plays. I just reread The Hobbit now (Yes!!!) and can't think of any female characters (except for Lobelia? ), so it would be nice to see a female.
By the way --- I am in the middle of re-reading LOTR, as wisewoman advised several pages back in this thread. Oh, and I've been paying attention to the character of Aragorn. I just finished reading Helms Deep; and I have noticed that he does have doubts about himself: not necessarily about the kingship, but it seemed to me almost like it could be a sort of self-esteem issue (Not knowing where to lead the Company, f.e.). I don't recall any/much of that being added into the films, anyways!

Same here. And Lobelia is only at the beginning and the end. She's a pretty small character and doesn't do much.
I just re-read The Fellowship Of The Ring and I found so many things I had missed the previous 8 times I have read it through!
Tolkien is really amazing with the complex, yet simple way of writing that he was so famous for!

They mention Primula Brandybuck - is she Frodo's mother?
I should look up the Hobbit family trees in LotR ...

Indeed Lady Galadriel, it is those very doubts expressed in the books that lead me to believe Viggo's portrayal captured the character perfectly. Yes, those doubts are given more weight and expanded upon in the film, and of course those doubts must be worked through before Aragorn is finally ready to be King. But he has not been turned into a completely different character.
If anything, it is those doubts that lead Aragorn (book or film version) to Wisdom and truly deserving the Throne. People who are absolutely certain that they deserve Power often have the least wisdom to use it responsibly.
