I watched Born of Hope last night, and it was great! :D

I almost want to say that I'd have watched it for the locations alone--they were lovely. The story was very sweet, the music excellent, and the characters had wandered out of the appendixes in the back of RotK. I particularly liked Arador. (It's too bad movie!Aragorn never got to meet him... ;)))

Spoiler
I cried more when Elgarain died than when Arathorn did. I kept thinking that Arathorn was killed by wolves, and so he wasn't actually dying. However, according to the Tolkien Gateway, he was shot through the eye by an orc. Which leaves the question, who was killed by wolves?

has anyone read Tolkiens book, "Children Of Hurin"?
I read it and it was awesome! but the end made me cry!
It's really confusing at first, but it's better once you get to the middle of the story!

I've read it, Liberty, and I know why it made you cry... ;) ;)) Me too!

Has anyone read The Tale of Sigurd and Gudrun? I haven't read it yet but I'm getting it for Christmas.

Getting a bit caught up:

I’m having trouble seeing the Elves in the LotR movies sing silly songs and teasing the dwarves and hobbit.

Me too! I am mighty curious to know how they will handle this in The Hobbit. :-

Thanks for that Born of Hope link, Gandalfs Beard. I've been looking forward to this film. Hopefully I can view it later this week. 'Tis good to hear some of your thoughts on the film. :)

Funny comic Mel! Poor Sauron, I almost felt sorry for him

Likewise! ;))

Yes, Liberty, The Children of Húrin is a wonderful, albeit very difficult, book, and aren't Alan Lee's drawings so fitting? The story of Húrin, Túrin Turambar, and Nienor Níniel is one of my favourites in The Silmarillion: it's so terribly and heartbreakingly tragic and gripping.

Lady Galadriel, I have not yet read The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún, but I want to some day. Do let us know what you think. We have a wonderful review of this very book in our upcoming Silver Leaves issue by well-known Tolkien scholar, Tom Shippey. :D

Here is some more Hobbit news. :D

johobbit: yes! Alan Lee's drawing were great for "The Children Of Hurin"! I love his artwork!

I tried to read "THe Silmarillion" but it didn't really make sense to me. my mom tried to read it too, and she was perplexed as well! my sister also tried, and liked it a little, but soon was confused by the complicated plotline! 8-} :p :D

Liberty, you can't really read The Silmarillion as if it were one story with a coherent plot-line. It's more like trying to read ancient historical and religious texts, kind of like the Bible.

It's essentially Tolkien's Bible of Middle-Earth. There is an overarching thread that runs through it, but there are a lot of different stories and histories along the way.

If you try again, but just read each story individually and not all at once, it may make more sense to you :) .

I've been away from this thread for far too long!!

Oh, I loved "The Children of Hurin" Liberty, Jo and Lady Galadriel! It was so sad though...I felt really bad for Hurin, having to watch it all and not being able to do anything :( .I agree about Alan Lee's sketches, they were beautiful and added so much to the story. I saw a book of his in the bookstore a few months ago, and it had tons of LotR sketches he did in it, they were so beautiful!

Spoiler
I did think it kind of cool though, when I realized that Tuor saw Turin (his cousin) only once, on his way to...Goldolin I think it was?

I need to watch Born of Hope soon, especially since everyone says it's so good! I watched most of the Hunt for Gollum, until my computer decided not to play anymore. X(

I read the Silmarillion last year, it is A LOT to get through. I actually skipped the beginning so I was totally confused about the different elves and such. The stories are really great though, and I agree with Gandalf's Beard, they connect in one way or another, but not like a normal novel, you only really discover the connections if you look at a timeline after you read the stories.

Great news Jo! It's been driving me crazy thinking of who Bilbo could be :p Did you also hear that some big news is supposed to come out December 15th?

Would someone be kind enough to tell me what happened at the end of Born of Hope? I'd like to know what happened (though I could guess it haha ;)) ), and since I haven't been able to play the last part.

Spoiler
I got to were there was only 10 min maybe left of the movie. The orc attack on the village has just ended, with the death of that young ranger girl who's name escapes me.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time...

=)) No problem. I thought of two other things...

Spoiler
The injury to the eye was a stab wound if I interpreted the raising of the arm/blackout correctly... sorry if I wasn't clear on that point.

And Arathorn handed the Ring of Barahir to Aragorn before he died. Backtracking a bit, he also made the (in my opinion) dumb choice to tell the orc that he wasn't the last of his line. What if he hadn't killed the orc after saying that?!

I agree, they did make an excellent casting choice for wee Aragorn.

huh. you do have a point there.

Spoiler
but seriously, an orc wouldn't care or know in the first place... even in LOTR, Sauron didn't tell his minions what was up, that would be stupid. So it doesn't make sense that they would know all about Isildur's heir here.

just my thoughts. but i guess they had to make some drama there. ;)

Popping in to say I really enjoyed "Born of Hope", and I think I would say I liked it better than "Hunt for Gollum". I should watch HfG again, though.

I loved the music, and I really wish there was a soundtrack I could buy. :P
The acting was good for the most part, and the scenery at some parts was really gorgeous. :D

Overall, I found it well made and enjoyable for any Tolkien fans. :) Highly recommendable.
