I mean more memorable individually - so dinstinguishable is a better word for what I'm trying to say. Thank you
Thorin not being a great leader was extremely important in the book. He never would have made it to the Lonely Mountain without Gandalf and Bilbo. Book!Thorin is rash, inexperienced, and too self-confident.
And too susceptible (sp?) to the Dragon sickness, greed, which makes him less than a great leader during the siege (where Tolkien allow some of the other Dwarves to silently think that they wish the situation could have been different).
(Book!Dwarves always struck me as being a bit more concerned about reclaiming gold than anything else).
I agree. Their main motivation for reclaiming their homeland seems to be the treasures they've left behind. I like their changed perspective, even though it may not be quite how Tolkien saw them.

New Hobbit Trailer
And there's actually some book parts in there. And a whole lot of non-book parts.
Like: They distorted the voice of the dragon so he doesn't sound so human.
The snippet of the conversation between Bilbo and Smaug.
My dislike list is still to be determined. It sure seems like they snuck an awful lot of clips in there without much in the way of connecting the storyline together. I think it remains to be seen just how far they veer from the book, but, like most movies, there will be some veering in there.
I've been avoiding spoilers except for the trailers this time around. So I really don't have anything else to go on beyond the book and the trailers.
I'm just not getting as excited about this one as I did about the first movie.
1. Implied Tauriel/Legolas love interest.
2. Implied Thranduil offering the Dwarves help. It might not happen the way the trailer makes it look like it's going to happen, but I really don't like the idea. It sounds like an excuse to have Legolas and Tauriel follow the Dwarves.
3. Overly-digitzed look of well, the vast majority of the trailer, particularly the Elves. It just doesn't look real.
On the other hand, I'm really loving Smaug's voice and the bit of Bilbo's speech to him. And the last bit with Thorin and Balin. Arkenstone! Arkenstone!
I'm just not getting as excited about this one as I did about the first movie.
1. Implied Tauriel/Legolas love interest.
I wonder if they are brother and sister, rather. Isn't there supposed to be a different love interest for her?[/spoiler]
I'm still excited - not so much because of the trailer, as the trailer throws unconnected scenes at you, as trailers often do , but at least it seems that Smaug has been done well, and Bilbo is as good as ever

Smaug's voice is awesome.

I rather looked at it as a very Lord of the Rings-esque triangle:
But this looks good. So very. very. good. The End.
"...when my heart is overwhwlemed, lead me to the Rock that is higher than I."
-Pslam 61:2
But yes, Smaug's voice is awesome. After watching it a few more times Bard is catching my eye as well. From what little we've seen of him he sounds perfect.
Hey guys
I really really really liked the first Hobbit movie, and ( i know this is an unpopular theory ) I liked it even more than the LOTR movies. Naturally I'm excited for the upcoming sequel.
I have a very bad case of the "meh"s about the Tauriel character, however. It's not that I wouldn't mind an interesting new character, it's that she'll probably be a cliched, contrived, unnecessary one, as daughter of the king said.
And is it a little weird that Luke Evans looks more like Orlando Bloom than Orlando Bloom does in this trailer?
EDIT: One thing I would absolutely not be okay with is if they made Smaug and Sauron/The Necromancer the same character, as it appears they do based on the IMdb page.
Welcome to NarniaWeb, thephfactor1! I have to pretty much agree with you about Tauriel. I don't mind having females, but it appears (Possible spoilers)
I also just wanted to throw in that as far as I am aware, we have no confirmed evidence that Smaug and Sauron/the Necromancer are made the same character. They are, however, voiced by the same actor -- Benedict Cumberbatch. He also did the motion capture for both characters. But this doesn't necessarily mean anything -- for example, in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, John Rhys-Davies played both Gimli and the voice of Treebeard.
My weigh-in on the trailer: loved it. There were, of course, parts that I groaned at, and parts in which chills went down my spine from the excitement. I am very interested at how it appears Bard and Thorin's relationship will be played out. (Mild Spoilers)
I also appreciated that Smaug wasn't shown as clearly as his entire head in the first trailer. This way, we get to sort of see him, yet not see him -- they kept him somewhat obscured, like in AUJ. And after seeing mostly good characters for the entire trailer, what is more ominous and foreboding than seeing inside the dragon's lair, hearing him speak (very well done voice, by the way), and yet keeping him mostly in shadow?
I was slightly annoyed that (Mild Spoilers)
(Edited to put in Spoiler Caps--just to be careful. )
Yeah, I was referring to Benedict Cumberbatch's role being listed as Smaug / The Necromancer. But if they've done that kind of thing in the past I guess never mind.
New Beorn picture! http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2013/10/04/80027-finally-see-the-human-face-of-beorn/
Overall I really like the look of his human form, but I think he doesn't have enough hair.
I have always been endeared how Tolkien distinguishes the dwarves by their varied-coloured hoods and beards in the book, so in a nostalgic way, I missed that in film, but understand why PJ did what he did with the movie dwarves, as they are so very easy to differentiate from one another. Really quite brilliant. If he had all the same type of dwarf multiplied 13 times with only their colourful hoods and beards to tell them apart, uh, no. 'Though that works so wonderfully well in the book ... not so much on-screen.
Thorin not being a great leader was extremely important in the book. He never would have made it to the Lonely Mountain without Gandalf and Bilbo. Book!Thorin is rash, inexperienced, and too self-confident. That's one of the reasons
is so poignant. He finally learned what true leadership looked like. Movie!Thorin by contrast still feels like an Aragorn stand-in to me.Spoilerhis death
Hear-hear!
As for the trailer:
*a possible Tauriel and Legolas or ♥-triangle thingy = arrrgghhh!
*Bard, hmm. Ditto, thephfactor1. To me, he looks far too much like Orlando Bloom and that keeps throwing me off. I will need to see more of him in-film to come to any full conclusion. I like how he is somewhat of a mysterious (and very honourable) character in the book: those aspects have always drawn me to him.
*the "reclaim our homeland" theme bugs me; sure, that might be part of it, but it's the gold and treasure they want, preciousssss
*every time I see Azog I just wanna roll my eyes; I totally cannot get into his character At All.
*looking forward to the Mirkwood spiders!
*not looking forward to action just for the sake of adding action, as occurred far too frequently (for my liking) in the first film
Beorn, someone mentioned that he looked werewolf-ish: I agree. And I think he should be hairier, and it should be black, black: his chest looks odd without. Plus, his beard should be longer. We shall see; we shall see.
