OHmmm.... how bout horror, drama, and classic ones? Love to hear `em soon!

1. Horror, it's not my thing at ALL! I do like suspense and thrillers, but NOT horror. So I can't say anything there.

2. Classic-

To Kill A Mockingbird, I loved the book and I love the movie! If you haven't seen this one I urge you to do so.

Casablanca, of all classics I think this is my most favorite of them all. The music, the story, the memorable lines and scenes. I just can't say anything bad about it- except that is dated in the sense that early on in the movie someone gets shot and killed, we see no bullet hole/blood or anything but given the era it's forgivable.

The Wizard of Oz and Mr Smith Goes to Washington are among my favorite classics as well.

Another classic that in my eyes could give Casablanca a run for it's money is 12 Angry Men, movie basically takes place in one room. That's it, just the one room- but what unfolds in there is so brilliantly executed that I just can't praise it enough!

The Grapes of Wrath and Gone With the Wind are also very well made movies. I really enjoy them both.

Singing in the Rain used to be a favorite of mine as a kid, I saw it recently and didn't enjoy it as I did then- it's not like I remembered it, but it's still a very enjoyable movie. And I really think An American in Paris is very good too- though the end scene I think is too long.

Going into more recent territory but still at least 30-40 years old:
The Sound of Music. I LOVE this movie! Everything about it, it's without a doubt my favorite musical ever, not including animated movies where Beauty and the Beast would trump over it in a heartbeat. :D

The Godfather, first time I attempted to see this I hated it! I really didn't like anything about it. But I tried again a year later and found it to be a very nice piece of work. The Godfather 2 was however ten times better in my opinion. The first is very good, but I think the second is a masterpiece. I couldn't stomach the third though, so BORING.

I will leave it there for now. I will get into Drama next time I post here. I love drama!!

Wow! That's a long list! But great picks ;) I agree with the movies, The Sounds of Music, Beauty and the Beast, and The Wizard of Oz ;).

My faves too are: Pride and Prejudice, Becoming Jane, and old Disney animated films. LOL. Ooh! Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is one too. :D

I just recently watched Ever After: A Cinderella Story. The story was touching and I love how Drew Barrymore acted in the movie. Her stepsisters were pretty though.
I almost cried at the part where

Spoiler
The stepmother threw Danielle's only memory of her father, a book, into the fireplace and Danielle did nothing but stared at it and cried... that was definitely wicked

My classic faves too are: Pride and Prejudice, Becoming Jane,

Those are not classics. (Unless you're talking about the 40s version, which I doubt.) They are period films. There is a difference.

Yesterday I watched Chocolat for the first time. I loved it! A beautiful movie demonstrating God's grace (undeserved love). Not for children though - there's a short sex scene and some mild language. The French backdrop didn't hurt either. 8/10

Currently watching:
Doctor Who - Season 11

Ohmigosh! That's like my second fave movie ever! I love it so much! Was it your first time? Yeah, it's so amazing, and the stepsisters were gorgeous. I love that movie . . .
And I love a lot of the movies mentioned in the above few posts. Mr Smith goes to Washington, Sound of Music, Singing in the Rain . .
And I want to see Becoming Jane so so badly! I love James Mcavoy, though I'm not a fan of Anne Hathaway. Anyway - I want to see it!!!

I like Ever After for Dougray Scott and especially Anjelica Huston (the evil stepmother sui generis), but I cannot say I've ever been a big fan of Drew Barrymore's acting, in that or any other movie. I've always had the notion that she never would have been famous if she hadn't been, well, a Barrymore.

There are things I like about Becoming Jane as well, but there are also a lot of things wrong with the movie. It is not at ALL period-accurate. The worst departure from history is

Spoiler
Jane eloping with Tom Lefroy, and then coming back. This never would have happened. If she had done that, it would be assumed that she had lost her virtue, and she would henceforth have become a social pariah, a la Maria Bertram in Mansfield Park.

Wow, that was a very negative post. :-s Sorry, folks.

I have no doubt that being a Barrymore got her foot in the acting door, but there are other contributing causes to her rise to fame. She started off as the memorably cute kid in E.T. and then dropped off the radar for a bit, resurfacing when she was a teenager and getting in trouble (this is right out of Child Stars 101 ;)) ). And then, while everybody was watching this person ("Hey, did you see what happened to Gertie from E.T.?". I remember hearing this quite a bit) self-destruct she manages to turn it all around and even got a sort of image reboot along the way being known as something of a "good girl" in her movies (see: The Wedding Singer, Ever After, etc.). I don't think she's the world's greatest actress, not by a long shot, but I've seen worse performances from Hollywood. :)

I agree with a lot said here about Drew Barrymore. I don't think she's a great actress, but I think she did a pretty good job in Ever After, and I don't think she stinks.
And she's very cute, especially in that movie. :)

I agree with lys about Becoming Jane having some historically inaccurate touches, however I still enjoy it for the story, and lets face it, the pretty dresses and all that fun regency stuff! :D

Hmm...Drew Barrymore. I don't think she's an amazing actress, but I think she has a very likeable personality/presence in movies that makes audiences enjoy watching her, even if she's not an amazing-incredible-oscar winning actress. And I do love Ever After. There are some great lines by Angelica Houston! :D

I watched Howl's Moving Castle for the first time last night. It's not very close to the book, but it's been long enough since I read the book that I was able to get over that. And unlike others films that deviate from the source material and suffer for it, I thought this film was quite good. I did thought the dialogue was a tad bit heavy-handed in places and the plot didn't quite make sense in others, but the animation was gorgeous and the vehicles were amazingly creative. And I'm entirely willing to blame deficiencies in the dialogue on the American translation.

I just watched Inception, that movie is just so insane in a very good way, I'm going to have to see it several times before I will totally get it.

Oh my gosh, Booky! I love that movie with a fierce and strong love! It's one of my very very favorites!! I agree that it wasn't especially close to the book, which was also great, but that doesn't ruin it for me at all. Ooh, I love it! I must see it again . .

Elanor: I kind of remembered you when I watched Ever After because of your avatar. Is it Danielle the one in your picture? Hehe. And yes, Drew may not be an Oscar leveled actress, but she still knows how.

Lys: Yes, I disagree with the scene on she eloping with Tom then suddenly returning. It just felt... wrong.

Valiant_Lucy: Ditto to the pretty dresses. ;;) Haha. It's like an upgrade to the story.

Past Movies is definitely the thread for me. I scarcely seem to watch anything that is less than fifty years old. ;))

Tonight I watched 1942's The Talk of the Town with my mom and my brother, and really enjoyed it. In it, an activist is framed for arson and murder after the burning of a factory, and after breaking out of jail, hides in a schoolteacher's home which has been just rented to a law professor. It stars Cary Grant, Jean Arthur, and Ronald Colman, and all of them are wonderful in their roles. I'd never seen it before and didn't know what to expect, but we all liked the cast and thought we'd give it a shot. It was very satisfying, with a good pace, lots of laughs, a nice amount of drama, suspense and surprise, and had emotional and philosophical weight as well. Would definitely recommend it!
