What is The Greatest about, narnia1? It certainly has a fabulous cast. :D

I didn't know anything about it before renting it, except the cast. That was a good thing because I was surprised and moved at the right parts. It deals with a family's pain, and how they handle the recent loss of their son, who passed away- I won't say how. Please don't make me say more, I will give spoilers. Unless you want the spoilers. ;)

The Greatest is such a good, well acted, movie, but it's possibly one of the most emoitional movies I've ever seen. I seem to remember there was crying in practicly every scene.

Basic plot is

Spoiler
Every day after school Carey Mulligan and Aaron Johnson walk past eachother, they stare at eachother. On the very last day Aaron's character finally stops and talks to Carey. They go out, do all sorts of crazy things like dyeing Aaron's hair blue, and, *ahem* sleep together (which I'm only mentioning here because it's kind of important to the plot). Near the end of the night, they end up in a car crash and Aaron is killed. A few months later, Carey shows up at Aaron's house announcing she's pregent. She ends up staying with the family.

So it's basically about a family working thru the various stages of their grief, but it also has some happy moments. I really, really enjoyed it. I found the acting realistic, and both heart-warming and heart-wrenching. A box of kleenex might be a good companion. ;)

whoa! some very heavy spoilers there. I wouldn't say "basic" ;))
But yes, you summed it up so much better than what I could have! and that box of kleenex would definitely come in handy if you're a crier- which I am not.

Spoiler
I was SO shocked when Aaron was killed, I wasn't expecting THAT. I figured something would happen when he stopped, but I didn't think it would be death. Oh, and I saw her pregnancy coming, that was predictable- but it didn't lessen the movie at all. And I loved the brother's part of dealing with it all (minus the drugs)

I was wondering if anyone on here has seen Shadowlands? And does it do C. S. Lewis justice?

aragorn2,
there's two Shadowlands:

1. 1985 it was released, I saw this one. just about a year ago. I don't remember much at all to be honest. I do remember enjoying it though. Rated it 3/5 in Netflix.

2. 1993 it was released, with Anthony Hopkins. I didn't see this one because of Hopkins, good actor but I couldn't see him in the role. So knowing I'd be distracted I just skipped it.

I saw the Anthony Hopkins Shadowlands. To be honest I don't really remember much of it except I fell asleep in the middle. ;)) What I do remember was mainly it seemed to be a decent movie, but Anthony Hopkins was NOTHING how I imagined Lewis to look like, period. And that really bugged me. I'd always pictured something like the guy who plays Foyle on Foyle's War to be a Lewis-ish actor, and this guy just was completely...not right, imho.

narnian1, I did think it was kinda a spoilery synopsis, but I think that major spoiler is shown in the trailer...

*Raises hand* I've seen the most recent Shadowlands. It probably doesn't do Lewis justice, but it was a good biopic and I enjoyed it. Debra Winger is very sweet; I'm not sure if she's how Joy would have been, but she's very likable. I know she turned his world over a bit, so that part of her character was accurate. She was nominated for an Oscar for the role. I would say the movie is mostly about their romance, and it's worth seeing to see the movie as unusual for two reasons: it's a very ordinary romance (well, not ordinary maybe, but these are not 20 somethings with Hollywood looks) and you get to see Lewis in a different light than in his famous theologian or even children's author.

If you were gonna rent it just for him, you would be disappointed. He only shows up in the beginning, for maybe ten minutes. He plays young Eisenheim, Edward Norton plays the roles as an adult. But the movie is fantastic, so I would recommend it either way.

Thanks. :) Too bad he just has few movies. I expected lots since mostly in Hollywood they pick the charming ones to be the lead roles in movies like young adults. But have you watched Angus, thongs, and perfect snogging?

sandyentersNarnia, Nope, not yet, and it will be a while before I actually get to it too. :) I want to see The Thief Lord first.

The Illusionist came out several years ago, 2006. I do highly recommend it, don't be put off just because he has such small screen time :p I think he's memorable in it, even if it's for such little screen time ;)

I rather liked the newer Shadowlands. *points at his name* ;)) If you knew anything about CS Lewis at all you probably knew how things were going to pan out, still I agree with Kate that Debra Winger really brought the movie together. And I had a moment of connect with Joseph Mazello (I think that's the actor's name...he was the same kid as in Jurassic Park) who played Douglas Gresham. There's a scene when Douglas, who is a huge Narnia fanatic (much like us I suppose) goes up into the attic at Lewis' house and finds an old wardrobe, and you can see the wheels just turning in his head as he steps over and tentatively opens the handle and tries to see if there's another country on the other side. I did the same thing when I was 7 and first saw the cartoon version on TV, although as we had no wardrobe I tried my closet door, and more than once, lemme tell you. ;))
