What makes Facing the Giants a mediocre to bad movie?
- A preachy presentation with bad theology
- A tired story
- A badly-written script
- Bad acting, except for one or two of the 'teenagers'
- Some unrealistic characters
- No subtlety and a serious lack of understanding the metaphorical language of visual mediums

What makes Facing the Giants good?
- The Death Crawl scene
- Some quality humour
- Good cinematography at times
- Very enjoyable behind-the-scenes material
- The cast and crews' commitment to Christ.
The weird thing is that their movie essentially says, 'accept Christ or turn back to him and everything will be great' but the behind-the-scenes material shows that the church have a more biblical understanding of God's grace and mercy. Pity that didn't come through in the movie.

Thank you, Warrior 4 Jesus, for your detailed list on what you didn't like about the film- I (honestly) appreciate it, even if I don't agree with some of what you have on your list or wasn't too bothered by it. :) It's nice to hear some more in depth reasons as to why people don't like it.

...but the behind-the-scenes material shows that the church have a more biblical understanding of God's grace and mercy.

That is true- I think the fact that the church is making movies to honour and glorify the Lord on small budgets with volunteer crews shows also that they understand that God is the One who is behind everything, and that by His grace and mercy they are there making films. Maybe it is me who is missing the theme of "becoming a believer or turn back to Him and everything will be great", because I don't see it and everyone else does, and yet I'm not sure. In the behind the scenes for Flywheel Mr. Alex Kendrick shared a personal story where God did provide exactly what the people needed- in his case, it was money to buy the right camera equipment to film Flywheel. God worked through other people, without the filmmakers having to go on a fund raising drive, to give them the exact amount they needed. True, in this case it wasn't as if the Kendricks became believers/turned back to the Lord and then were given what they needed (such as what others see in Facing the Giants). They were believers already. Perhaps where the script "goes wrong" (if that is the right expression) in Facing the Giants was having the main characters not be dedicated believers at the beginning, but then turning back to Him at some point in the film. Perhaps the theme of God supplying our needs would be much more powerful if shown in a story where the main characters were dedicated believers from the beginning of the film- yes, having some struggles, because who doesn't?- and God supplies their needs through various ways throughout the film. (All that to say I don't doubt that God can supply the needs of people who have just become believers, because He is an all powerful God, and I don't doubt that He has, but just that because it's in a film, which non-believers will probably see at some point, it is important to not give them the wrong idea, while also showing how great God truly is.)

Dear days of old, with the faces in the firelight,
Kind folks of old, you come again no more.

Despicable Me really left me crying because of laughter and some parts that were sad. The minions really were amazing! Here's a link of them, teasing a minion, it really is funny guys... (share)

^Yeah. Gru was really a very responsible dad. I love how Jason or Josh Segel who voiced Vector acted in the movie. Vector was funny, like, oh yeah! Vector! Haha. And Agnes is soooo cute! She reminds me of Boo in Monsters Inc.

I was not impressed by it, but interestingly enough, I still have a hard time getting some of the images out of my head. Some parts are interesting but the story line, the acting, the script, simply the overall feel to it just didn't do. I don't recommend it. It gives the impression there should be more but it isn't there.

Be watching for the release of my spiritual warfare novel under a new title: "Call to Arms" by OakTara Publishing. A sequel (title TBD) will shortly follow.

I really need to see Despicable Me ;))

so recently I watched Nacho Libre. I am slightly ashamed to admit that I loved it ;)) . It was surprisingly good. The jokes weren't half as bad as I thought they'd be and it was a nice story.

I also watched Napoleon Dynamite. That movie I was slightly dissapointed in. It was funny in parts but not as good as I thought it would be. I did like it somewhat though.

Yeah, I wasn't really that impressed with ND myself. I remember that when it was still relatively new it was all anyone was talking about moviewise (it must have been a really slow year). I mean the movie doesn't have any coarse language (that I remember) but the plot was goofy and the characters were goofier too and it just never gelled for me. I remember chuckling at one or two funny parts but never let out a good belly laugh, which is what the movie was supposed to be able to deliver. Oh well, can't win em' all, right? ;))

That's what I think- I have no idea why it was so incredibly popular. Yeah there wasn't any language that bothered me, the only questionable part was the product that his uncle was selling. It was just a tad too...meaningless? for me. Well I did laugh alot when he was feeding the llama but that's about it ;)) . Haha yes :p .

That was the point of Uncle Rico's product. It was meant to be meaningless. Also, Napoleon Dynamite, perhaps more than any other comedy, is one you either love or hate. I was meh about it the first time I watched it but I tried it several times more and found it more hilarious each time. It's definitely a dry type of humour, very self-deprecating (more British in that respect than your usual American stuff).
