What is BSG - Battle Star Galactica?

I like Gladiator, but I think it was ruined for me by everyone talking it up for years and years. I actually think the visuals have dated more quickly than Blade Runner's (so many of those Coliseum shots just scream "CGI!"), and I don't know ... it just fails to move me like other historical epics, e.g. Braveheart. Still, again, I liked it, and I'd put the three Scott films I've seen about on par with one another - with Blade Runner the most original, Robin Hood the most entertaining, and Gladiator probably providing the best balance between those virtues.

Well ly, perhaps you need one more Ridley Scott film to "seal the deal", so to speak. *winks conspiratorially at W4J* Might I recommend Alien? :D

Alien's on my to-view list, but I think Body of Lies is going to be the family's next Scott. Dad saw part of it on TV and asked me to put the DVD on hold from the library. It looks good, but I'm much more interested in Alien, American Gangster, Black Hawk Down, Legend, and even Kingdom of Heaven.

Well...we finally got around to seeing Amazing Grace. I liked it quite a lot. It's arguable it did enough justice to Wilberforce's life, but it was an exceptional coverage of his life, I must say. :) It was really a movie which left one sober and thoughtful.
The cinematography was beautiful, the score likewise. The actor chosen to play William Wilberforce did well, I think. John Newton...slightly less so, but still good.
Overall, it was a very good movie, IMO. :)

^I LOVE that movie. The first time I saw it I thought it was confusing and weird but then again it was after midnight and I was only like 10 or 11 when I saw it :p .

Apparently lots of people have difficulty following Amazing Grace the first time around. I didn't, and I've always found the pacing/narrative structure quite good, in spite of what the critics say. It's one of my very favorite movies. I'm glad you enjoyed it, Bella, although I must disagree with one part of your review - I thought Albert Finney absolutely stole the show as Newton. Brilliant performance!

Black Hawk Down is amazing. It's right up there with Saving Private Ryan as one of the best war movies I've ever seen. Definitely one of Ridley Scott's best in my opinion. Not Alien good, but still a very, very well made and intense movie.

Amazing Grace was quite easy to follow and the structure was excellent.
One thing I didn't get, perhaps because was away for a few moments before, was what were Pitt and Wilberforce talking about when Pitt said, "Keep your consience" or something like that? (when it had to do with the French war) I was a little out of the blue at that.

I thought Albert Finney absolutely stole the show as Newton. Brilliant performance!

Haha, I see. It was that the haunted way he employed for a short period of time creeped me out just a little bit, because I've always imagined John Newton a calm, quiet person. (but I see why it was necessary) When he's first introduced, and in the later part of the movie when he's writing his account, though, I really enjoyed seeing his performance. :)

Oh I also think Amazing Grace is a great movie! :)

Just finished watching Meet Me in St. Louis, first time I see it and I found it quite enjoyable. But for me, Judy Garland will always be Dorothy :p I'm glad I finally saw this movie, I finally see her in something different. :)

Edit:

I never mentioned that I saw a fifth Marx Bros. movie: Animal Crackers. I have no real thoughts on it though, the first four I saw were better but this one was still quite enjoyable but not as memorable a movie to me.

Last night I watched In the Bedroom, a 2001 drama that, in spite of the title, is mostly a revenge story. But it is possibly the most boring revenge drama you're ever likely to see. I think I would have enjoyed it 10x more if 30 minutes had been shaved off of it, because there are some really great scenes here, but they are surrounded by sheer tedium. Great performances by Tom Wilkinson, Sissy Spacek, and Marisa Tomei too. The movie has been read many ways (a study of grief, of the impact of violence, of the ways women subtly control men, of the positive and/or negative impact of revenge, etc.), but for me, it works best as an expose of the evil, the violence that can exist even in the everyday environment of a quiet New England town.

Intriguing, but not really recommended.

So I finally watched Alice in Wonderland last night. I wasn't dissapointed b/c I went to it with very low expectations (well when I first heard about the movie I was super excited and thought it would be awesome but the more I learned about it, the less enthusiastic I was about it). However, it didn't really raise my opinion at all. I thought the movie was going to quite well, decently. Then we got the the Hatter's futterwhacken. Now that was just BAD. I could have just died as soon as I heard that horrendous music. I did like Alice's futterwhacken, but the Hatter's was horribly cheesy, lame, and weird. My favorite part was the costumes :p . The story was all right, though a little cliche with, go to a magical world and save them from an evil creature and ruler and whatever. I would have liked it better if...well I don't know. It felt like something was missing. And parts of it were a little rushed, to me at least. So it gets around a 3/5.
