Arsenic and His Girl Friday are definitely and unquestionably screwballs, and highly influential ones at that, especially HGF. Love that movie! :D Let me know what titles you watch, and what you think of them.

Arsenic and Old Lace is one of my favourite movies but I just don't see the big deal behind His Girl Friday. In my mind, it just wasn't funny or much good.

Last night I saw The Karate Kid for the first time. I really liked it. A few things here and there I could have done without (like the language!) but it was altogether a good movie. I do kinda wish they extended it a bit though. Does anyone know if The Karate Kid 2 is any good?

Ooh and today my parents gave me a BBC Charles Dickens Classics box set with six different movies :) . They also gave me Enchanted and my sister got me The Pursuit of Happyness! I love birthdays :p .

Very cool! Which ones? Are those the more recent ones like Bleak House and Little Dorrit or the old ones?

I very much like Karate Kid 1. It's a simple story with a nice theme and characters that were fairly archetypal (ie; the bully, the wiser old man, the hardened, sadistic veteran, etc.). I liked Macchio in the first film, but he starts to grate on my nerves a bit in the 2nd film and by the 3rd film he had annoyed me so much I was half looking forward to seeing him getting his comeuppance on the tournament mat at the end ;)).

The best part of KK1 is when Mr. Miyagi gets a little innebriated on his anniversary, gets dressed up in his old WW2 uniform, and is spouting out short memories of the war, as well as talking to his long-dead wife. When I was a young kid I didn't fully grasp the depth of that scene, but now that I'm older I find it extremely touching and among my very favorite parts. Pat Morita got a lot of accolades for that, and rightly so.

Now, on to your big question; how is Karate Kid 2? I found it to be fairly mediocre and kind of predictable. I mean it's largely the same movie except that Mr. Miyagi has to face a few of his own personal problems from the past. It's merely ok....if it's on I'll watch it, but it's nowhere near as good as the first film. Karate Kid 3 is the one that makes people want to pull their hair out ;)). I like KK3 if for no other reason than I really enjoy Thomas Ian Griffith's portrayal as the main villain of the film, a guy who is sadistic and yet charming and very charismatic. My review of that film can be found here. :D

The Karate Kid- LOVE
The Karate Kid 2- Watchable but I agree that it's not nearly on the same level as the first.
The Karate Kid 3- I couldn't even finish it. Hated this everything about this one.
The Next Karate Kid- Didn't even bother with it.
The Karate Kid Remake- Clearly for a younger audience than the original. I'll pass on this one as well.

It's the older versions. Here's a list of them :)

Oliver Twist
Martin Chuzzlewith
Bleak House
Hard Times
Great Expectations
Our Mutual Friend

Shadowlander: that was my second favorite part, my first was probably on Daniel's birthday right after Mr. Miyagi gives him a car :) .

I think I might watch KK2 one day, but I don't think I'll bother with the others. Except the new remake. I do want to watch that. I really like Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, and every now and then remakes are good. My only real concern is how far they're gonna go with the romance factor. After all, Jaden's only like 12 years old...

Liberty, yes, I've seen Millions. I enjoyed it but you're right - it is weird. Think who the main character is. Now, recognise that the whole movie is from his point of view. The boy is young and his imagination is vast. His family is Catholic and he's trying to come to terms with the ideas of guilt and miracles. If you understand it from that perspective the movie makes more sense.

I don't know why but yesterday I started thinking about the movie Cats and Dogs when my dog did something similar like that beagle Lou in the movie. Has anyone seen or remember this movie? :)

Yeah, I remember the movie. It wasn't great cinema but it was fun and a good spoof of Cold-War era spy movies. The ninja cats were crazy.

How was it disturbing? Weird, yes. Some bad theology, yes. But I wouldn't say it was disturbing.

I loved Millions when I saw it at a small theatre (I don't think it was a box office film here). A good teacher of mine had free tickets to a showing for critics and didn't want to go so offered them to a friend and myself. We went in not knowing a single thing about the movie, only that it wasn't rated R and would feature glorious English accents.

It was a very creative piece of work. I haven't seen a film in ages that can incorporate randomly appearing African miners, famous figures from history and dead saints and have them speak a relevant message. It's the kind of thing that works really well in books, but is harder to translate well when it comes to the medium of film. I agree with Warrior; I wouldn't call it disturbing, but perhaps a little off-centre when it comes to the saints and theology.

It was also a very unique insight into how a child grieves. The main character (cute, cute little boy whose name escapes me) grapples with loss and death using his imagination and that really appealed to me. I know it sounds sad but there were some very funny moments in this movie too. The elder brother was hilarious and his bodyguards were no less amusing. There were quite a few stabs at grown-ups and what they do with their money; I loved the script.

The only downside to this movie was the way

Spoiler
the father dealt with his wife's passing on. I know it was realistic; but realism is bleak and although this fits in well; it was just too sad the way he moved on; not the actual moving on itself.

It was on the whole a creative piece of work; and I would watch it again.

p.s. Damsel thanks for that advice on The Little Prince; I was wary of the dated-ness being so tacky because I'd never heard it raved about before; although the story itself seems so cute. I might read the book first. :)
