Gladiator is a great movie. Lots of great action and drama and the main villain is extremely creepy. You feel like you're living amidst the danger of the Collasium and there's not much more frightening than that.

Gladiator is a great movie.

Ditto, Gladiator is my favorite Russell Crowe Movie! :D Easily makes my top ten movies! :p I love that movie! :D

@Shadowlander: Plugged In only recently started reviewing games, I think they started doing it only last year or the year before that.
But they have reviewed older games before, like the Prince of Persia Trilogy. :)

I really enjoyed Gladiator too, for the same reasons others have stated. One of Ridley Scott's best.

I thought Eagle Eye was just okay. My little brother likes it a lot, and it made a decent amount of money at the box office. I don't think it did very well critically, but I guess depending on what type of movie you like you might like it. I guess my reasoning for not really loving it is that I don't like Shia Labeouf very much, and like narnian1 said, it does sort of feel like a cheep knockoff.

Gladiator is awesome, the best part has to be the music and visuals. I thought it was simply amazing with the sets and costumes.

I hadn't watched Eagle Eye yet.

Gladiator was a fantastic movie!

I just recently watched the movie Defiance. Wow. That's all I can say. It was such an amazing film. Has anyone seen it?

I've seen Defiance, basically I make it a habit to try to watch all Jamie Bell movies. First saw him in King Kong, then Jumper, finally my friend highly recommended Billy Elliot which he did at the age of 11 or so- by far his best.

Since I try to see his movies, I like him as an actor even though his movies aren't always the best. As for Defiance I thought it was great but need to see it again. The only time I saw it was in theater, and the subtitles didn't work for half of the movie. :(

Whew, so I've not been here in forever.

I've been off and on movie binges all this year, so I'll just post the "highlights." :p

I finally saw The Princess and the Frog. Enjoyable. Not the best Disney, but a definite step in the right direction. It was very pretty, the return to the hand drawn style is a big plus. Yet, there weren't any stand out moments. Nothing that just made me fall in instant love. Good overall, though.

Star Trek (2009). I'm not a Trekkie, at all. (I know there's Spock and Kirk and they're on the spaceship Enterprise; that's about as much knowledge as I have :p ). So, I was quite pleased with how enjoyable the film is to us non-Trekkies. It wasn't absolutely fantastic, but it was better then anticipated.

Shop Around the Corner. An old favorite. Nothing spectacular, just a cozy film that follows life in a shop and watches a penpal relationship grow into something more (in a novel way :p ). Is anyone else familiar with it?

Persuasion (1995). I've heard Ly praise this one enough that I had been wanting to watch it for a long while. It was very good. The performances were amazing, and (as much as I can recall) it was a faithful adaptation. :)

The Spirit of St. Louis. Well, Jimmy Stewart looks horrible with blond hair. Aviator caps are good. ;) Anyways, I had seen this when I was younger, so when I caught sight of it on the library's shelves, I wanted to compare it to my memories. Some parts held up, other memories had no basis in fact and I'm not sure where they came from. ;)) Stewart's performance during the flight itself is amazing. You can believe that he's been awake for two days straight and is confined in a small plane that might not even get to France. Good film, but I'm not big into history and such that go alongside this film, so it's not a favorite.

Hitchcock binge. . .

Dial M for Murder. Very fascinating look at the "perfect murder" plot. I thought the cast was very well done. I enjoyed it, as much as one can enjoy such a film. :p

Rope. Weird. I didn't really care for it. Plus, the format of the film/plot/not sure what the term is felt very stagey. Which isn't necessarily bad, but not what I was expecting. I did like that it took place entirely in the one apartment, that was an interesting twist, yet it also contributed to my complaint of the stage-like feeling. . . so, I'm still mixed as to a final decision.

Strangers on a Train. Again, weird. There weren't any parts that left me overly suspenseful of what would happen. The characters were odd and not all that likable. Not a fan.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith (1941). All I can say is, I'm glad Hitchcock focused on thrillers and didn't go into comedy.

Notorious. Subjected my mother to watching it with me (she hadn't seen it before!). It was just as enjoyable on this rewatch as the first time around, plus I "got" some subtle things that occurred earlier in the film, before we are able to understand what Sebastian and gang are up to.

More recent films:

The Young Victoria. Wow. Beautiful film and an amazing cast. Loved it, loved the it all—except for the bit at the end where

Spoiler
Albert is shot.
It felt like a tacked on bit for extra drama. I understand the point was to show Albert's devotion to Victoria, but it still didn't fit as well as I would have liked.

Julie & Julia. I've been wanting to see this since it came out! Meryl Streep's performance is amazing and wonderfully real. The Julia portions of the film were wonderful and lovely. The Julie portions weren't awful, but the character of Julie (or perhaps it's Amy Adam's performance, I have trouble telling which is at fault) wasn't all the endearing. I'm not sure if it's because Julia was just that much more fantastic, or what, but I was always eager to go back to Julia and never missed Julie. It has it's rough spots, but nothing that ruins the film.

The Blind Side. Honestly, for all the hoohah over this, I wasn't expecting it to be much. I was very happy to be proven wrong. I loved the way the Hallmark moments were put in in such a way that it doesn't come out feeling like a Hallmark movie. I don't have a huge opionion on it's merits; I enjoyed it, don't think it was the best film of all time, but it was still very, very good.

Lady_Liln,
The Princess in the Frog, I didn't like the "magic" used in this movie, otherwise definitely a step in the right direction.

Star Trek, I'm also not a trekkie and loved this movie!

The Young Victoria,
thanks for putting whatever it was in spoiler box, I'm looking forward to seeing that movie but haven't had a chance.

The Blind Side,
I love that movie! Not the best ever, but like you said- very, very good.

Rope was a good movie but would've been a lot better with the first 5mins edited out (they weren't offensive, just very revealing in terms of the plot).

Narnian1, does that mean you'll be watching the Tintin movie when it comes out? Jamie Bell is in it! ;)

*catches up with the recent movies talked about in the thread*

Defiance[/b: LOVED this :D Daniel Craig, Jamie Bell, and the actress-who-was-in-Alice-in-Wonderland were all excellent. It was just a reallyreally good all around film.

Rope.

It was based on a play, which in turn was based off a real murder case, so maybe that's why it felt "stagey"? Also,

Spoiler
The nature of the murder was that it was supposed to feel like a stage--the murderers inviting the friends of the victim over for dinner, having the food on his "coffin", etc.
I reallyreallyreally enjoyed Rope. It was very fasinating, very dark, but as someone who enjoys anything to do with "criminal minds" (not just talking about the show, haha), I found it REALLY interesting.

It's odd, cause everyone says Julie's parts drag too much but they're my favorite parts to watch :P I really like Julie's character because she seemed so realistic, she reminded me a tiny bit of myself. Also, I really enjoyed the way the movie protrayed marriage so positively. Both the couples in the movie had very strong, good relationships with their spouses. They weren't just "the husband", they were actually their friend first and foremost. I really liked that. :D

Warrior, when DOES the Tintin movie come out?! I'm dying to see it! :D

Just rewatched Inkheart. I just. LOVE. that movie!! :P It's been over a year since I first saw it and I still enjoy it just as much. The whole thing is very well done, and I feel like it stayed incredibly true to the spirit of the book. The whole thing has this magical, "book-ish" feel without going overboard and coming across as cheesy. The script is well done, very believable lines. The characters--Elinor was just perfect, I loved her to pieces :D She had a lot of GREAT lines. Maggie was also very well played by Eliza Bennet. I felt like she really nailed the performance without being too cheesy or "precious" or, in the other direction, trying to be too grown up. She was just a regular, bookworm-ish 13 yr old girl not trying to be anything she wasn't. A lot of time when she said humorous lines she had this sort of hopeful, half smile look, and I recoginized it from when I would do the same time (saying something I thought was funny, and hoping the others would think so too). I loved the part in the beginning, at the book fair, where she is rummaging through a pile of secondhand books and exclaims "Look! Harriet the Spy! Oh, and The Secret Garden!" There are lots of other literary references throughout the movie as well, from The Wizard of Oz, Huckleberry Finn, King Arthur, A Christmas Carol, Repunzel, Peter Pan, etc etc :D
The soundtrack is definetly memorable, Dustfinger has a really great "theme".
While the ending of the movie is different then the end of the book, you can tell they didn't want to make a sequel and this way it ties it all up better then leaving it hanging like the end of the book Inkheart does.
So yeah. There's my little rant on how much I love it. ;))

I've been dying to see the Tintin movie since I first heard strong rumours about it back in 1997. The movie comes out in late 2011. That's a long wait still but nothing compared to how long I (and many other die-hard fans) have already waited.

I didn't really care for Inkheart. It felt too.... controlled. To me it seemed like the type of movie that could have been so much more than it was. It's a bit since I saw it, so I can't point out any particular instances, but it just felt to controlled.

I hope that made sense....

On the other hand, I really enjoyed The Spiderwick Chronicles. :D Having never read the book, I can't compare the two, but as a film, it was great. Fortunately they steered clear of the usual "family movie" cliches which could have easily ruined the film. 4/5

I picked up Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium on sale today. It features Dustin Hoffman in the title role and Natalie Portman as his young apprentice.

It was predictable but I enjoyed it as a fun, light-hearted flick. Wouldn't it be fun to have access to a toy store like that? ;)

And now I know the source of a quote I've seen floating around here on occasion: "Your life is an occasion. Rise to it."

But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
