NL101, I think you are mis-inferring something that isn't there, perhaps to justify your own conclusion that Avatar isn't a good film.
I can't speak for DamselJP, but for myself, a film's technical aspects have little bearing on my enjoyment of it. I've loved terribly made movies and seriously disliked well-made ones (and personally I think Unbreakable's ending ruined an otherwise good movie).
I don't think Damsel JP was claiming that "technique" is what makes a great film (and I know I didn't). I think that she was pointing out that claiming a film is terrible, or belongs on a 'Worst" list, is often based on an entirely subjective experience.

Could you please inform me about which part of my post you are referring to? Because I didn't intentional infer anything. I was merely stating a possibility; a theory:
I'm just speculating here...
I think I'll let DJP tell us exactly what she meant, as I'm certainly getting something different from her post than you are.
I think you may have mistook my meaning. When I say "technique" I'm not referring to the technical aspects such as cinematography, CGI, etc. I'm referring to the techniques for storytelling such as DJP referred to previously. Sure, if I was referring to the technical aspects (cinematography, etc.) I could never deny that Avatar was a great film, but as a piece of art (which I believe all filmmaking should be) it holds very little.
Just to be completely clear, I'm not saying that none of this is personal opinion, because, quite clearly, a LOT of it is, but I'm certainly not saying it ALL is either.
I'll always be a,

I love that movie! Dory's great
I never really liked A Bug's Life. It bothered me for some reason.
I finally got around to seeing the movie Knowing (with Nicolas Cage) last night. What a downer of a Movie. I liked most of it, but the ending wasn't very satisfying to me. For End of the World type movies I liked 2012 much better. There wasn't anything wrong with it per se, I just found the ending depressing.

Squishy
GB: I hated The Knowing, the visuals and effects were the only things that were great in the film, but yes it was a downer story and far to sad for me to ever watch again. 2012 was an alright movie, not the very best but good

Indeed DamselJP! As a general "rule" a don't care for sad endings or Tragedies. I prefer Happy Endings, even if they're not "realistic" (or especially because they're not realistic). Films like Sophie's Choice, for example, make bawl my eyes out , and I can't watch them again.
I don't mind too much if terrible stuff happens in the middle of a film, as long as it's resolved by the end.
Notable exceptions to my "rule" are Bridge to Terabithia, which I think handled the tragic aspect with real Grace, and Pan's Labyrinth, which balanced the Tragedy with the Fantastic. In the latter film, it seemed to me that the "Mythic" elements were intended to be more Real than the "real world" elements (I think Del Toro even said as much in interviews). And if that hadn't been the case I could never watch that movie again either.

But you know something like The Knowing will never happen exactly like that

I like sad movies but not necesarily sad endings. I watched a movie when I was younger called Swing Kids. Just thinking about the ending makes me want to cry. Same with Sophie Scholl: The Final Days, although both of them did have a bit of hope in them.
oh yeah and Bridge to Terabithia did handle it well, though I still bawl when I watch it. Never seen Pan's Labyrinth though.
I know. i've seen Bridge to Terabithia about 10 times now and i still cry before and after watching the movie. I always make excuses that my eyes get watery in the dark to the people I watch it with sometimes.

haha well most of my friends know I cry easily, so I don't bother to make excuses when I'm watching a movie .
Tonight we might watch Tuck Everlasting! I love that movie so much! Another tearjerker- the end is soooo sad .
That movie is good! I watched it about 2 months ago and seriously the best romance story ever told by Disney.
Have you ever read Tuck Everlasting? It is a magnificent read.

yes I read the book before I watched the movie- I always do that .
So what other movie do you want to talk about?
