Going back to Sweeney Todd, well, the plot really is scary but has a sort of twist in it. Didn't get the story from the start but as it plays, it shows why this scene is like this, why Sweeney is like that.

I've heard a lot of good about that Sweeney Todd movie. How did you like it? And is there any bad content in it?

PC004, I remember watching Somewhere in Time when I was very young and it was on regular TV. I remember liking it, but I must admit I haven't seen the movie since. I can't remember how Reeve managed to get himself back in time, although I want to say he hypnotized himself somehow.

I don't know if these count as "movies", per se, but back in the day network TV used to have miniseries, and as a child I remember being a big fan of a few like Shogun, Salem's Lot, and The Martian Chronicles, the latter of which was sci-fi and was definitely my cup of tea, although the Martians were kind of creepy. ;))

I didn't really like Sweeny Todd. I was familiar with the musical and the art direction in the movie was exceptional but I just didn't enjoy it (but I don't like musicals to begin with - bar several exceptions).

Valiant_Lucy, yes, I've seen Adaption too. I thought it was brilliantly executed but not necessarily a movie I would watch more than once or twice (I've seen it twice).

I loved the Casino Royale remake and was reasonably disappointed with Quantum of Solace. The latter had great action scenes and locales but when the movie slowed down, they didn't make room for character development and an exploration of Bond's grief. The story was rather dull and the villain was greasy. Not creepy or exciting but just gross. :P Also, the Bond girl was just a Bond girl. I loved that the former movie presented a Bond girl with more depth and interest (Eva Green *sigh*). I'm surprised and disappointed that they reverted to the original formula of the series after such a strong entry in Casino Royale. Not terrible but merely entertaining. Some killer action scenes though.

ditto everything you said about Vesper and the two Bond films, Warrior!

Just finished watching a 30's film starring Katharine Hepburn--Alice Adams.
Apparently it was quite a good film, and won her an Oscar.
Now, my favorite "old" actress is Katherine...but I really, really don't see how this won her an Oscar. I didn't like her character...I could empthaise with her in a few places but mostly she was kind of annoying. She was constantly leading this guy on to make her think she was super rich, then eventually he finds out in a somewhat anti-climatic way (he's not angry...), and all's well that ends well, I suppose. The only characters that were interesting were the brother, which we see not much of. The cook that Alice hires for the dinner scene was funny, but hardly in the film at all. I feel like the most complex character would be that of the mother, but there wasn't as much development there as there could have been.

The highlight of the movie was the dinner scene where the Adams try to impress Alice's rich suitor by seeming higher-up then they really are. It's sweltering, everyone's dying of heat while trying to politely eat the rather disgusting meal prepared, and Mr. Adam's tux buttons keep popping open. The cook Alice's mother hired to wait on them makes the scene. My Dad and I were roaring with laughter.

Other then that though, we were mostly waiting for the movie to be over. My Dad finally said during a long section of dialouge mostly done by the character of Alice -- "Why doesn't she just shut up and let him have a chance to get a word in edgewise?!?!" And I pretty much agree. :P

So yea. There's my review! And I'm actually watching as I type, "When Did You Last See Your Father" with Colin Firth and Jim Broadbent. I'll review it when I'm done! :)

I have a question for all you people here, who indeed seem to be knowledgeable about movies.... does anyone know of any good film/mini series adaptations of War and Peace? I have heard of several different ones, but I would basically like to know if any one is particularly good, (ie: close to the book, mainly.) I'm also fine with watching one in another language if there are English subtitles. Thank you for your help, everyone! :)

Riella, Sweeny Todd has a lot of bloody violence but it's very stylised and 'arty'.

Hi Riella, I'll throw in my two cents about Sweeney Todd too. I enjoyed the film for the wonderful music and acting, but the bloody parts were just a bit much for me. I even got a little queasy in the movie theater. However, if you do well with bloody you may like it:) Also, Forever Fan, I found two versions of War and Peace on IMDB. I haven't seen either version, but you could take a look at these pages ;)

About Sweeney Todd. It should be mentioned there is cannibalism in the movie, (even though the people aren't aware of it.) :|
No, this movie isn't just for anyone. Not a bad movie but it is very dark-toned. There will be some disturbing parts. I saw it once, and no more. I liked parts of it, but I can' really say I liked it overall.

Yes, the content is more disturbing than anything else. There's a lot of blood but it's over-the-top and very stylised (doesn't look the least bit realistic). Still not a movie for children or young teens.

I really, really enjoyed Sweeney Todd. That said though, if you don't like violence/gore, it may not be for you. There's tons of scenes of people getting their throats slit, to be rather blunt. And while it's played in a sort of macabre/gothic kind of way, I mean, it's MUSICAL :P, it's still, well, people getting their throat's slit. So beware. :P I thought it was great fun though, and this reminds me I need to get the soundtrack!

edit: yea, what Warrior said. The blood is made to look pretty fake. But even though me and my brother and friend who were watching it thought it was tons of fun, my Mom was completely repulsed by it. Of course she had to walk in the room RIGHT when someone was being killed. I don't think she was the same after that. ;))

edit: movies I've seen latly:

When Did You Last See Your Father?
(starring Colin Firth and Jim Broadbent). First off this movie had quite a bit more *ahem* content then I was expecting. I still enjoyed the movie but I don't think a lot of you would because of that. :| I had absolutley no idea what the movie was about expect I was pretty sure Carey Mulligan was in it (she was, breifly). The film centers around Colin Firth's father, Jim Broadbent, dying, and Colin remembering his childhood, and his (strained) relationship with his father. Maybe it was a combination of the huge glass of pepsi I'd drank before watching it, or maybe it was way too late but I ended up completely BAWLING at the end of the movie---Matthew Beard (young Colin), awkwardly saying goodbye to his Dad before leaving for college. Then they end up hugging and it's al very emoitional and :(( :(( Yeah. And I NEVER cry in movies. :P

Also saw the Time Traveler's Wife. Wasn't a huge fan of this. It was an OK movie, I just didn't relate to it or superbly enjoy it. :)

I watched my first James Bond movie the other night. I was flipping channels and saw a movie called Golden Eye which was coming on. So I googled it find out that it was a James Bond movie and was super happy because I've wanted to watch one ever since my dad used to make jokes about "shaken, not stirred" when he asked someone to get him a glass of water or orange juice.

I really liked it and it whetted my appetite for more James Bond movies! I watched Casino Royale when it came on the next morning and I liked that one as well. Although, I definetly like Pierce Brosnan's James Bond better than Daniel Craig's.

I think Peirce Brosnan just had a better character interpretation. Daniel Craig didn't seem to bring as much realness if you know what I mean, to the character. It just seemed like Daniel Craig's James Bond was more stiff and less human like. It wasn't bad just not quite up to par with Pierce Brosnan, in my opinion.

So how many of you like James Bond? I'm sure there's several out there.

I like Pierce Brosnan, but I've never seen a James Bond movie. Oh wait, I saw the end of one- with some guy hurtling to his death from a helicopter onto a giant round thing- yeah, not my cup of tea. :P

I saw Wives & Daughters and Sense and Sensibility a little while ago during a miniseries fest- they were both really good! The latter especially considering I didn't find the book nearly as exciting (I mostly just wanted to give Marianne a slap upside the head most of the time). The actor who played Colonel Brandon was brilliant; reminded me a lot of Liam Neeson actually.

I also saw Madagascar II: Escape to Africa. A whole different class of movie; but really funny and amusing nonetheless. I remember seeing it in Africa, as the family I stayed with had kids who loved it- like let's watch it three times a day loved it- but it never gets old. :)

Pierce Brosnan had more suave and charm but Daniel Craig's version of James Bond is much more down-to-earth in my opinion. Many of the James Bonds are rich playboys and very cartoony but Daniel Craig's interpretation was given more depth and realism.

I thought the first Madagascar movie was merely okay, but I absolutely loved the second one. It's not a masterpiece but it's great fun and quite hilarious.

Oh man, does no one agree with me? You're the third person who's said pretty much that exact same thing!

Is there anyone out there who likes Pierce Brosnan better?
