I think I didn't post in this thread yet.
I play the violin and the piano. I've taken violin lessons since I was six, so more than 9 years now and I started piano 5 months ago, but I learned myself a lot on the piano before I started lessons, so I could skip piano book 1 and begin at book 2 of a Hungarian method. I am playing burgmuller etudes now, (if anyway knows them (Op.100))
I like composing to, on the piano, but I just thougt up 2 songs and they're quite simple... so.
My mum's a harp teacher. So I can play a bit harp, but I haven't got the passion to play the harp a lot.
So, that's my music passion
Hey MissAravis your version of "This is The End" was great!
I'm doing my piano grade 7 RCM this year as well as basic harmony. I hope to go all the way to grade 10; and if I get my grade 8, I can at least teach. That will handy to me in post secondary for I can teach to put some bread on the table.

I play the piano. I mostly play classical music. I don't really play songs from this day and age. But after hearing the piano music at the beginning of BarlowGirl's Beautiful Ending, I really want to get the music for that song and learn it.
I want to learn the guitar someday just because it's easy to carry around (unlike the piano), it's easier than piano (there are only so many chords you can learn), and it's just cool.
Have any of y'all heard of Mountain Ocarinas? That was my first and only instrument that I can confidently say I play. It's pretty amazing, and way, way easy to play! Watch the crash tests video. It gets long, but you get the idea of what they're trying to prove pretty early on so you don't have to watch the whole thing. Though if you stop too soon, you could miss them throwing the ocarina's around. Imagine hurling your instrument against a wall as hard as you can.

There is no such thing as a Painless Lesson
Julie - guitar is not easier than piano. It is much harder on your fingers, and if you want to be really good, you have to be able to play more than just chords.

You're also part piano-prodigy, Kat, so I'm not at all surprised that you could play it at 4 decently. My 4-year-old brother on the hand... No way could he pick out a tune, or anything of the sort.
But I'd say guitar is harder.

Wow, I envy you that you could play piano at 4. When I started taking lessons I couldn't play a note and it has taken me 8 years to get to grade 7 RCM. I'm definitely NOT a protege but I enjoy my piano all the same.

Ok, as a joke, and yet very realistically, here is my list of five reasons that guitar is hard to play...
1. The frets are either too far apart (like a B) or too close together (such as an A or a B7). There is no in-between.
2. The neck is either too wide to reach all the strings you need to or so narrow your fingers touch more strings than they're supposed to. Once again, no in between, although some acoustics come close.
3. Your fingers must be tough enough to play. Thin strips of metal tend to hurt your fingers after a while. I can no longer feel textures such as sandpaper or rough velcro with my left fingertips.
4. To strum, you must either hold a pick (and not drop it), or hit the strings with your fingers (prone to cause bruising if you do it wrong; this is rather painful). You can pick the strings (sometimes called 'plucking'), but using softens and 'fuzzes' the sound, and using a pick for this task is difficult and a daunting task to learn (I'm still working on it).
5. When playing a tab, your hands move not only left to right, but up and down, oftain at the same time for the full length of the fretboard.
Bonus 6. On piano, one note is one note with only one key to play it on; likewise, one chord is one chord. On guitar, you can have six ways to play one note, and I have yet to discover how many ways there are to play each chord (at least five, I think).
Probably the only people who will understand this or possibly find it funny will be other guitar players. And to explain terms and show chords to those who don't know them...

Hi,everyone!
I play the piano, but I'm not really sure what "level" I'm on. I can sight read if I go slowly and can pick out different melodies, but I can't play completley by ear.
I also enjoy singing. It's so much fun!
Back to Watziznehm's post, good for you for trying your grade 7 RCM! I went through the Royal Conservatory all through my piano-playing years and gained so much from it. Hours and hours of work (and nerve-wracking exams ) but well worth it! All the best to you. Even though you probably know this, make sure you keep up that (boring scales, arpeggios, etc, etc) technical work, because that's what really makes a difference in a piece's fine-tuning.
I got my grade 9 piano through RCM, then took my grade 10 through the university. Hard, hard, hard, but good, good, good! As you're planning to do, I taught piano privately through uni to help pay my way . I do encourage you to teach at some point. It's great experience (plus it pays well).
And I must say how I love theory, harmony, and counterpoint! I know most folks just sneer at me when I say that, but I was really drawn to it: music analysis is fascinating to me!

Thanks for the encouragement johobbit. I do keep to my scales, arpeggios ect. Sometimes I practice a 1/2 and hour a day on them for my teacher believes very strongly in good technique.
As for harmony, I love it too. I'm really enjoying learning how the notes best compliment each other and although I haven't quite gotten to analysis in this book I had to do a little bit of that in Rudiments 2 so I think I will enjoy that as well.

Well. I have something of interest to report.
I'm most likely going to start learning violin.
😮 Yep. That's right, folks. Now I just need a violin and lessons. Getting the OK was the easy part. *laugh*
