Wow, pretty! She looks kind of 1940-ish.

Lady Courage, is that a picture of Hilary Rhoda? She graduated from the school I attended freshman year! Apparently she's the only one who ever went to that school and didn't go to college. But I heard every year she takes a student on a shopping and makeup spree.
I love my red lipstick! I only wear it with black eyeliner and nothing else. I think the red is enough for one face and anything else is just too much.
I can never get the under-eye liner right. It always looks really bad when I try to put it on.

Lady Lilliandil, thanks for mentioning that. Maybe I will check into it. It would be so nice to put my hair up without pins that yank and pull. That's great that Goody Spin pins work for you though! The concept of how to use them is neat, but I guess they just don't work for me.
As for makeup, I don't normally use much. I'm mostly an amateur with it. Someone bought me eye shadow for my birthday a couple of months back, and I have barely even tried it yet! As soon as I get around to experimenting with it...
I have almost always used powder foundation. The only time I wore liquid foundation was for a play I was in several months ago, and then I did not apply it myself. I seem to remember the makeup people suspecting that it would stain their hands. I'm not fond of the idea of using something like that very often.
I am okay at putting foundation and blush and stuff on but when it comes to eyes liner i have never even tried.
All my dark lipsticks are dark pinks, and they look really bad on me. I want to try RED some time, as well as some browner colors, because they look better on me. Usually I just use this light gloss, that has a bit of brown, and bronze in it, and I LOVE it.
I also have a really difficult time with eyeliner - the only time I put it on is for plays, when it doesn't matter how I look. Sometime I'll have to try to get it right, so I could try wearing just a little bit.
A lot of people (teenage girls who wear all the makeup they can get their hands on) wear black eyeliner, spread on really thick, all around their eyes, and it looks really bad. I wonder, why can't they learn to wear lighter colors, or at least have it light on the bottom. It looks so nice on people who know how to wear it, and just have it halfway across the bottom, slowly vanishing. So pretty!!! That's what I'd do, probably with some grey stuff I have.

Lucy, doesn't she!? I just love 1940's makeup, hair and style. This particular makeup look reminds me of that woman in "Captain America: The First Avenger". Throughout that movie I was admiring her makeup more than the special effects.
sillygoose, I have NO idea. *hops on Google for a minute* ... Well, it looks like you're right!
... Wow. Where do I sign up for that spree?
Oh goodness, yeah, those gals who line their eyes with pure blackness... Wow. They look like racoons, except racoons are cuter. But seriously, it's not flattering to anyone unless they have truly giant eyes. And actually, now that I think about it, I've known someone with giant eyes and eyeliner around her eyes made her look... Well, she looked sorta like an alien. Good thing she only did that for fun and not for real.

There is no such thing as a Painless Lesson
Hi, everybody. *waves* I found this thread and couldn't resist dropping in. I love playing with makeup and hair -- on myself and other people. I helped do stage makeup for my school play last year. Sooooo much fun!
Anywho, I have waist-length, curly brown hair with lots of layers (layers are amazing; I definitely recommend them for anyone planning to cut their hair!). It's frizzes like a wild animal when I leave it alone, so I use some Garnier Fructis cream-gel to keep it smooth. It works incredibly well, and doesn't make my hair look wet and crunchy once it's dry.
For makeup, I wear the whole package: concealer, foundation, eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara & blush. I almost never wear lipstick, though, unless it's a formal occasion. I'm always careful not to look overdone. I like my makeup to complement my face, not distract from it. Personally, I don't think it's pretty when I look at someone and the first thing I notice is her makeup.
Queen Susan: I used to use only liquid foundation. My mom taught me to do makeup, and that's what she uses. However, I don't think she realized that my skin might react differently to it than hers. I typically have very clear skin, but when I used liquid foundation every day, my skin was not happy. I switched over to the powder a couple months ago, and my skin looks normal again. I'd really recommend that you only use liquid on special occasions. (Oh, and if you do use it, make sure you get a powder the same color to go over it. If you don't, your skin will just end up looking greasy and shiny).
sillygoose:There's a fine line between too much and too little eye liner (no pun intended ). I wear upper- and under-eye liner. It typically doesn't look good if you draw it out past the middle of your pupil. Oh, and I always blend my under-eye liner with a bit of shimmery eye shadow that matches my skin tone. That way the liner isn't super noticeable, except at the extreme outer corner of my eye.

They look like something from outer space, that's for sure. I agree with Tarkheena, that when I look at someone, I don't want the first thing I notice to be their makeup. Honestly. It's supposed to make you look GOOD!
I guess I've jumped into makeup full force though. When I started shadow, I went to dark shades, and yesterday I actually used eyeliner. First time that I'd put it on, other than for a play. The stuff I have is a little too dark for me, except for fancy dancy things, but thankfully my sister has some really nice stuff. I just put it on the top, very close to the eye, so it pretty much just makes me lashes look darker and bigger, and my eye as well. I really like it. I LOVE MAKEUP!!

QS, for foundation I use a liquid base with a powder over it. Maybe that's bad for the pores, I don't know. I suppose everyone's skin is different, though, and so far I haven't noticed any problems.
Pretty picture, Lady C. I agree with you that the eyeliner could be a bit lighter on the bottom - or with that lipstick, at any rate. If the lipstick was a more neutral color, she might be able to pull off the under-eye liner. I don't wear lipstick all the time, but when I do it's a light pink. Mauve, actually. My skin tone is really fair, so can't pull off bright red lipstick on normal occasions without looking like a vampire.
For my eyes, I wear eyeliner on the top; never mascara - I can never apply that stuff right, and it annoys me to no end. My eyelashes always clump together. Eyeliner is easier, and it doesn't smear as easily. I always have it on my upper eye, and I trace a very, very faint line under my eye... though not across the whole eye. I do it halfway, and let it vanish slowly. It's not even noticeable, and merely highlights the lashes without having to use mascara.
Yeeeeeah. I'm not much of a fan of raccoon eyes. I don't care a whole lot if it's on other people, because I don't bother myself with other people's tastes and styles.... but on me? HUGE no-no.
Anyway. For eyeshadow I use a very neutral-colored brown, shimmery one daily, and I love it! It looks natural, which I like. I rarely ever use any other color, unless it matches my skin tone well. The only time I had a bright color was at a wedding, when I wore a hint of blue to match my dress. That was the one and only time.

That's what I do too, and I've been wondering if that's also bad for the pores. Like Miss R, I haven't noticed any problems yet. I wasn't really aware that there were different variations of wearing foundation, to be honest.
I also wear mascara, but only on my upper eyelashes. I haven't tried putting it on the lower lashes yet, because I heard that it can look bad. Maybe I'll be adventurous to try it someday, who knows?
I also occasionally wear eye shadow. Since I wear glasses though, it feels like it makes my eyes look darker and more subdued rather than helping them stand out. Lighter colors do help, but no matter what color I use, I have to do it in small amounts. I have rather small eyes as well, so I don't want to make them too heavy or dark. I want to be able to accentuate my eyes rather than overwhelm them, if that makes sense. Does anyone else have the same problem?

I actually only wear mascara on my lower lashes. I have pretty full upper lashes but my lower ones are kind of skimpy. It makes my eyes look so much bigger when I define the lower lashes, I don't think it looks bad at all, but only if you keep it looking natural and there are no clumps.
I wear glasses, too but I've never had that problem where dark eyeshadow colors make my eyes heavy and dark. They look fine. (lol and for your reference, I'm not big on racoon eyes so our definition of dark will probably be the same) Sometimes I find that I'll accidently put on too much eyeshadow and it'll look bad without glasses, but when I put on my glasses it looks fine.

In my perfectly honest, uneducated opinion, I'm not sure that ANY sort of makeup is good for your skin. Maybe some is harmless, but you'd probably be hard-pressed to find a cosmetic that actually was good for your skin. So no matter what kind of makeup you wear, I think that as long as you're wearing a kind that you're not allergic to, cleaning it off every night and keeping your skin moisturized and happy in the meantime, it shouldn't matter what you use. /two cents.
I'm a powder foundation kind of girl, although I actually don't use it that much. I've never had much luck with foundation...my mom got me started with liquid, but I hated how it felt and I never could find the right color either. It always seemed thick and icky. Powder is lighter, but I'll still put it on and not really notice a difference. I'm probably not using it right. Either way, I tend to have fairly clear skin, so usually I skip foundation all together.
I'm a big fan of blush. I have a light color that I use on my cheeks and a little on my T-section, and then a second, darker one for just my cheekbones.
For my eyes, I use a little eyeshadow; not too much. Usually I stick to neutrals, but I have ventured into some purples since I have brown eyes and they tend to compliment each other. I generally apply a dark brown or purple right above my eyelash, then a middle color, and then a light shimmer on top and then a little streak of light color right down the middle of my eyelid. I don't know if it helps, but I think it makes my eyes pop a little.
I gave up on eyeliner awhile ago; I could never get it to look right. I usually just stick to a little bit of mascara; not too black since my coloring is brown and it looks REALLY odd if I wear very black mascara. I usually apply to just the top lashes and then a very little bit on the bottom.
Usually for lipstick, I'll wear just a little Burts Bees lip shimmer, or a tube of Clinique that a friend gave me if I'm feeling dressier. I do have a tube of Covergirl Lasting Lipstain that I use sometime, but not often because it's not lying when it says that stuff lasts forever. It is SO hard to take off at the end of the day! Even my makeup remover towels barely put a dent in it. You have to be really careful applying it, because once it goes on, it doesn't really come off.
Just thought I'd pop in and share this pic:
This is my favorite eyeshadow for everyday. Usually I use a little bit of brown eyeliner, but the line of white shadow they added near the lashes is interesting. Think I'll try it tomorrow.
What'cha think?
Edit: This is a model, not me. Just thought I'd clear that up.

I really like the picture, Tarkheena - I think it looks really pretty.
I usually just put mascara on the top lash, because I tend to rub my eyes ( ) and when it's on the bottom, it can make a mess. And I find it hard to apply on the bottom.

Okay, thanks for the input everyone! From what I've tried of liquid foundation anyway, it seems to take longer to put on and more difficult. Maybe because I'm not used to it. *shrug* But I guess I'll stick with mostly powder for now then. =)
