I'm okay at sewing and knitting but don't understand how crocheting really works. Can anyone help me?

Crochet is a little like knitting but with a hook like this ( below) They come in packages of like 8. You should start on a size 5.5. Get some yarn that is not too thick and easy to work with.

One of my friends crochets, it always seems so weird that something can be made out of one hook (I think I'm too used to knitting ). She made some woolen baubles for our Christmas tree with the tiniest crochet hook I've ever seen, they were really cute.
I finished making a cotton stag the other day -
I originally made the pattern for something else but changed a bunch of stuff to make it more deer-like and also a bit more streamlined. I'm still having trouble with the shape of the underside which I just can't seem to figure out, but it's not holding the whole thing back.
I tried using my sewing machine for some of it but it really depressed me, I think I enjoy hand sewing too much

I love that stag you made Shantih, all the stitching is beautifully done!(especially on the head). Good Work!

Shantih, that's gorgeous!! It's soooo cute! A little bit of tweaking and you could turn it into a Greyhound, or an Italian Greyhound! *hint hint* J/K
But I'm not kidding on how cute it is. It's so squeezable. And so put-on-a-shelf-and-stare-at-able too. Great job!

Funny you should say that, because that's exactly what I originally made the pattern for ! -
He was a birthday present for a friend who, you might have guessed, loves greyhounds

I need the advice of fellow knitters... You should know that I suck at patterns I want to knit a scarf for one of my friends. I'd like it to be medium wide and of average length, and I decided to start with a few rows of daisy stitch, then stockinette for most of it, then end with the same amount of rows of daisy as the first part of the scarf. The problem is, how can I calculate how much yarn I'll need for the daisy portion? Should I just knit two independent daisy pieces and then sew them to the finished stockinette? (Also I've never tried daisy stitch before and I don't know how many rows it'll take for it to take shape) Thank you!

I was browsing the Winter 2011 edition of Interweave Crochet when I noticed a mitten pattern called Digory. I thought, "That's cool, I wonder...?" and then turned the page and saw the Aslan shrug.
Personally, I like the mittens better, but your mileage may vary.
