Thank you for your good wishes, johobbit and Rose-tree Dryad. That Narnia birthday cake was awesome and I do appreciate it. Due to the International Date line it came the day after my birthday when I needed it most to tell the truth. I did manage to enjoy the comical side of a birthday which was spent in preparing for a booked medical procedure, fortunately not mine.

No, nobody is to blame for the awful mess this Christmas, New Year and birthday was, though I might consider the person who allowed himself to be so freaked out by overcrowded carparks before Christmas, that he was in such a rush to get back to his car that he slipped over in the parking area, fracturing his wrist. That would have certainly put a spanner in the works, wouldn't it? It has also bagged this poor darling the life of Reilly until February 1st.

And then he booked the routine medical procedure a bit too hastily, for the day after my birthday. He even wanted to use my $10 birthday coupon, the chemist (pharmacist? drug store owner?) sent me for the horrible tasting preparation he had to take before Sunday evening. It was one of those procedures where fasting, clear fluids, non-red jelly and lots of black tea were compulsory 24 hours before doomsday. So, though we left him a piece or two for after the procedure was over, we bought a wonderfully decadent-looking ice-cream cake the Friday before, and had much of the rest of it eaten by Sunday evening. Preferably in front of him. You know the sort. Honeycomb-flavoured ice-cream, lashings of caramel and chocolate trimmings, including tiny bits of Mars bars. Told you I am a little bit evil.

There have been some consolations since his wrist was broken and duly plastered. The chance to get on with Christmas preparations in peace, no backseat driver, and an otherwise low-key Christmas and New Year. Thankfully the weather was cooler than anticipated despite a horrendous Sunday on 20th December. And, when we read a story on January 17th about an escaped ferret called Cheech invading a hospital near Sydney (north, not west like us), we couldn't stop laughing at Warren the cartoonist's take on the ferret, and where in the hospital it might have escaped to.

No, it is a beautiful cake, which I wouldn't have minded at all for a really sensational birthday celebration, such as my 70th birthday, which won't happen until 2018, if we both survive that long. By that time Silver Chair might be well under way, and what a great way to celebrate it! I'm not sorry at all, now that the procedures all went well, even the removal of the cast on his wrist. Hubby needs to learn to take his time. And nobody, not even computers, can help the passage of time, which involves time zones and crossing the International Date line.
