I like the Love Theme from The Godfather films, I know it is called something other than "Love Theme", but if you just type that into YouTube, it'll come up.

Very good song, reminds me of everything Italian.
I hum it constantly, and I'm listening to it now... ;)

Haven't seen the films though, but I so badly want too!

Requiem for a Tower is AWESOME too, but I have no idea what it's originally from, I hear it in every awesome film trailer, it's classic.

For me anything by Danny Elfman is classed as my favorite music.

If anyone knows me at all, they know I'm a soundtrack junkie. ;)) Though perhaps not as much as PrinceCor ;)) And I can tell already glancing through this thread that I have pretty different taste than some of you.

I very, VERY seldom like "credit songs". I like the orchestral score but I'm not a big fan of words put to the themes. LotR:FotR (Enya, May It Be) and LotR:RotK (Annie Lennox, Into the West) were two huge exceptions. They were put into the movie so seamlessly without being obvious or completely unrelated. ;))

The greatest movie ever made had one of the greatest soundtracks ever made, courtesy of James Horner. ;))

I also think Legends of the Fall is Horner's greatest score, but Aliens is definitely in his top 5 greatest. ;) :D

My favorite soundtrack of all time is definitely a James Horner creation, but it's not either of the ones you two mentioned. ;)) My favorite is the soundtrack to Braveheart. I went through a Cassette tape and a CD I listed to it so much. ;))

I still get goosebumps listening to the end credits...

The downside of being a massive fan of James Horner is that most of his music reminds me of his other works now; specifically Braveheart, Titanic, and Willow. ;)) Case in point, when I was listening to the Aliens track just now that SL posted, I was like "Oh, that sounds like Titanic." Which I admit isn't really fair as Aliens came out long before Titanic, but it reminded me of my least favorite part of the Titanic soundtrack, so I'm gonna have to disagree with SL that it's any good. :P ;)) (Just kidding, of course ;) )
PrinceCor, I saw Legend of the Fall a few years ago (and hated it) but I don't remember the soundtrack. I listened to the The Ludlows briefly and it was really pretty, so I'll have to look into this one. :D

Requiem for a Tower is AWESOME too, but I have no idea what it's originally from, I hear it in every awesome film trailer, it's classic.

It's from the film Requiem for a Dream. However, since that movie is about drugs and such, the actual song is rather dark. ;))

More to come later! ;)

Yes, "Requiem for a Tower" is a "Hans Zimmer-fied" rendition of the title theme from Requiem for a Dream, which FK has so graciously linked to. ;)) I like both versions, but I must admit the "remix" is more powerful/memorable.

*I'm about to go into a James Horner discussion, so bear with me....*

As most people have pointed out thousands of times, Horner has a habit of "recycling" his themes/motifs. Granted, all film score composers do this to some extent (Bernard Herrmann, Christopher Young, John Williams, Hans Zimmer), but Horner does it more prominently than his peers.

In his earlier days, Horner would actually tweek the themes or motifs and make them arguably better. Unfortunately around 1995 he started re-using music without much variation, which led to more "ho hum" scores. :-s

If you want to hear Horner's best works, check out his work from 1982-1995. This roughly consists of the music from Star Trek II through Braveheart and Apollo 13. :) Then again, if ANY recycling of music (no matter good) annoys you, then just skip the majority of James Horner's work. :P

*end lecture/rant* ;))

FK, the movie Legends of the Fall is merely so-so, but I HIGHLY recommend giving the score a chance. :D If you like Braveheart, you'll probably like Legends. :)

Here is one of my favorite tracks from the album (though I adore the whole thing :P ) :

Oh puh-leeeze! You're gonna stand there with a straight face and tell me you weren't wearing out Bryan Adams tapes of "Everything I Do (I Do it For You)" when that goofy Kevin Costner/American Robin Hood movie came out back in the 90's? :))

Personally I have to give the recycled theme/motif award to Thomas Newman. I love his sound, but every soundtrack sounds EXACTLY the same to me. ;)) I couldn't even tell you which of his soundtracks are my favorite. It usually goes to the one I'm listening to at the time. ;)) But I'd have to say that Road to Perdition, Finding Nemo, Little Women, and The Shawshank Redemption are near the top.

I never saw that movie. :P ;)) And I wasn't wearing leg warmers in the 90s. I was driving around in the car with the stereo cranked way up singing into the steering wheel. :P

ETA: The Wrath of Khan just happened to come up on my Pandora station. ;)) Does anyone else besides me have a Soundtrack Pandora station?

I do, FK. I don't use Pandora too much lately. Now that I've had Zune Pass for about six months, I have pretty much every album I could ever want and I'm downloading everything people suggest to me.

Yay! Someone who thinks a different composer is worse than Horner on this issue!!! :D :D/ ;))
In all seriousness, I have not heard much of Thomas Newman's work. I'll have to check into some of those scores that you mentioned. :)

*has a Pandora soundtrack station but hardly ever goes to that site anymore*

7chronicles, I love you. The Game Has Changed is really good, and Dream is Collapsing is too. I haven't really heard your others, though.

Tron: Legacy, had a really good soundtrack. Of course, it was really electronic sounding, and many people aren't going to like that.

Inception was really good to. Gildor may kill me for this, but I think I like the soundtrack better than the movie. ;;) Gildor, I'm innocent! (If I don't show up for a week, call the police. :D )

I liked the Prince of Egypt soundtrack to; it was good for a kids' movie back then. I've noticed (actually Gildor Inglorion pointed this out) that kids' movies are coming up with more and more epic soundtracks.

As the last I can think of for now, Terminator: Salvation just about gave me a heart attack. Which means it was good. :p

Lady Haleth, you might want to check into more of Alan Menken's work if you really like Tangled. :) Among other impressive titles, he did the music for Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Enchanted.

I'm sure that they're included in the "other impressive titles" category, but you forgot to mention, Newsies and The Little Mermaid, in that list. :p
...............

Well, tis time again for a thread to discuss everyones favorite musical sub-genre: Soundtracks! :D ;))

I don't know if it's my absolute favourite musical sub-genre, but I do like them a whole lot! ;)

Whether it be the latest film score, TV show soundtrack, video game music or a Broadway musical, if it's a soundtrack album... then discuss it here!

Why, thank you, I will! :D
I'm not an expert like you, Cor... or like FK. But as I said, I do adore soundtracks! So, I'll try my best to add to the conversation!

Broadway Musicals:
Ok, this could almost get it's own thread. :p (I like to think that I know musicals, the way you know soundtracks) I think the majority of the soundtracks in my collection fall under this category... and I don't even own all the ones I want!!! :-o By no means are these the only broadway shows I enjoy, but they are some of the best/the first to come to mind...

Les Miserables
-One of, if not THE best musicals ever written. I never fail to get chills on the opening chords... and the goosebumps don't leave til hours after the show is over!

Beauty and the Beast
-I'd even venture so far as to say that I love the stage version more than the film. ( :-o ) I think it's the added songs that does it... and one in particular, Home, has been my default audition song for years now! Another favourite? No Matter What.

Newsies
-Has an awesome song for almost every mood one could get into! They're fun, funny, and inspiring! Hands down favourite, though... King of New York. I know, you might be saying "But that was just a movie." Yes, but I still consider it in this category, besides... there IS a stage production now. ;) In fact, it's in it's first run somewhere in New Jersey, as we speak! (though they've changed a LOT from the movie... pm me, if you want details)

Little Women: the musical
-Not very well known, but man, is the music KILLER!!! One of my theatre dreams is to have a role in this show. The songs are just so... so... emotional, and convey perfectly the themes of the book! Favourite songs include: Some Things are Meant to Be and The Fire Within Me.

The Secret Garden: the musical
-Beautiful, beautiful music!!! And a plus? Mandy Patinkin plays Colin's dad... until this show, I never knew the man could sing, but WOW!!!!!! Favourite songs include:Winter's on the Wing and Come to My Garden/Lift Me Up (sorry, can't find the OBC recording... only community theatres. if you wish, I could show you one of them?).

Wicked
-Just... I can't describe it. The music is just awesome; and the plotline, fascinating. The end. :p

Phantom of the Opera
-In high school, I spent HOURS singing along to this one! Even planned how I would stage it (choreography and such)! And yes, I still wanna be Christine... just not as badly as I used to. (Other roles in other shows have taken that slot over)

Animated movies:
Now, for this category, I remember the disney ones. Otherwise, I'll vaguely remember thinking the music played a big part in them, but can't remember much of the score, other than a few songs. To sum up?

Disney stuff: I WANT!!! *only owns some of them*
Don Bluth: Fave songs are from the Fieval movies, though Land Before Time and the rest were nothing to sneeze at either. ;))
Fave Fieval songs...
Somewhere Out There (I love both the movie version and the pop version. but I linked you to the pop one)
Dreams to Dream

Live-action films:
I know I've loved music for this category, but the only soundtracks I remember owning are things like the ones for the Mighty Ducks movies or something. =))
Can I get back to you?

Television:
I love theme songs... they easily stick in one's head. ;)) But any music used effectively is fine by me. :D However, one of my favouritest tv theme songs ever? That award would have to go to one of my all-time favourite shows:

Video games:
I don't have an opinion, though if you asked one of my friends from when I was in jr high and high school, he'd have said: "FINAL FANTASY". :)) He even learned to play it on the piano. 8-|

Ok, if I think of more, I'll be back. ;)
Sorry for all the smilies!

So here's a question for you all....
A few weeks ago Johobbit and I were discussing soundtracks and she said that if she sees a movie and doesn't like it, the soundtrack is more or less ruined for her. (At least I'm pretty sure that's what she said ;)) ). I on the other hand tend to separate soundtracks from the movies and whether or not I liked the movie, I can form a different opinion on the soundtrack. So I'm curious how that works for everybody else? :)

I don't have an opinion, though if you asked one of my friends from when I was in jr high and high school, he'd have said: "FINAL FANTASY".

If we're gonna talk video game music, I absolutely have to go Halo a nod. I love, love, LOVE that theme. Here's the infamous Warthog Run from Halo 3 which happens to be my favorite...
