But tis' strange;
And oftentimes, to win us our harm,
The instruments of darkness tell us truths,
Win us with honest trifles, to betray us
In deepest consequences

Banqou from Shakespear's 'Macbeth'

Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested, that is, some books are to be read only in parts; others to be read, but not curiously; and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention

Sir Francis Bacon from his essay 'Of Studies'

Dear Lord give us the strength to change that which needs to be changed in our lives, give us the courage to endure that which we cannot change and give us the wisdom to tell the first from the second

Sometimes God will lay us flat on our backs so that we will at least once in a while look to the sky

I know I'm going to terribly mangle this ...but I'm looking for a quote with something like:

"your sins, I can forgive them, all of them " (might also have "I am life"). Obviously words of Jesus, but can't even make a guess as to source. Could be Mere Christianity, could be a dozen of other sources by CSL.

After changing terms & searching more on the www, I finally found it.

"What are we to make of Christ?" There is no question of what we can make of Him, it is entirely a question of what He intends to make of us. You must accept or reject the story.

The things He says are very different from what any other teacher has said, Others say, "this is the truth about the Universe. This is the way you ought to go," but He says, "I am the Truth, and the Way, and the Life." He says, "No man can reach absolute reality, except through Me. Try to retain your own life and you will be inevitably ruined. Give yourself away and you will be saved." He says, "If you are ashamed of Me, if, when you hear this call, you turn the other way, I also will look the other way when I come again as God without disguise. If anything whatever is keeping you from God and from Me, whatever it is, throw it away. If it is your eye, pull it out. If it is your hand, cut it off. If you put yourself first you will be last. Come to Me everyone who is carrying a heavy load, I will set that right. Your sins, all of them, are wiped out, I can do that. I am Re-birth, I am Life. Eat Me, drink Me, I am your Food. And finally, do not be afraid, I have overcome the whole Universe." That is the issue." (C.S. Lewis, God in The Dock, "What Are We to Make of Jesus Christ?", pg. 160.)

"Indecision may or may not be my problem"
-Jimmy Buffet

I love this one, being the indecisive person I am :P

Haha, that's a great one Glenstorm the Great!

I read the LotR books for the first time recently, and Sam was undoubtedly my favorite character. This line of his struck a chord with me, for some reason.

Aw, Sam's great! One of my favorite quotes in the trilogy is his:

"How do I feel?" He cried "Well, I don't know how to say it. I feel, I feel'-- He waved his arms in the air--'I feel like spring after winter, like sun on the leaves; and like trumpets and harps and all the songs I have ever heard!"

I already posted it a little ways back, but I couldn't help but post it again. I just love the sheer joy of it...I don't know, I can't really explain it but I love it. And your quote also reminded me of another good Sam quote, but I couldn't find it maybe it was just me thinking I was remembering something, but here's a quote close to the one I thought of:

"I wish I wasn't the last. I wish old Gandalf was here, or somebody. Why am I left all alone to make up my mind? I'm sure to go wrong. And it's not for me to go taking the Ring, putting myself forward. But you haven't put yourself forward; you've been put forward."

Oh, and Djaq's quotes are hilarious ;)) especially the first!

Here are a few other ones I've thought of recently...

"It may be for others to complete what we've begun, but there must be a beginning."
-Stephan Lawhead (I actually haven't read Tuck yet, but this is such a great quote)

"My dear fellow, life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of a man could invent."
-Sherlock Holmes

The Paradoxical Commandments
by Dr. Kent M. Keith

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

I love both of those quotes that you posted! The joy expressed in the first one is inspiring, and I absolutely love the second one! That part of TTT was so moving for me, and that quote was one of the bits that made me cry. ;)) *happy sigh*

;)) Aren't they though? She's hilarious!

"It may be for others to complete what we've begun, but there must be a beginning."
-Stephan Lawhead (I actually haven't read Tuck yet, but this is such a great quote)

I love that quote! I was that close to putting the book down and going to make a quote sig out of it the first time I read it. ;)) It's probably the best quote in the whole series!

"Our only hope of keeping what we have is to risk it all." - Same as the previous.

Cool quotes, everyone! I love the LotR ones. :D

A few fav quotes from me. I'm in a Tolkien mood, so here's two from The Hobbit:

"I may be a burglar, or so they say, personally I never really felt like one...but I am an honest one, I hope, more or less." - Bilbo.

"If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world." - Thorin.

Aaand...one more quote.

"Too much information can choke your brain!" - The Candlestone by Bryan Davis. Great book. ;))

I am here trying to prevent people saying the one foolish thing people too often say, "I accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would be a lunatic--on the level with a man who says he is a poached egg--or he would be the Devil of H--. You must make your choice. This man either was (and is) the Son of God or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him for a demon, or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God.
