I've never had mince pie. Perhaps I could try it this year?
Christmas in our house often means lots of family around - and everyone wants to eat. The food often is similar to that at Thanksgiving - turkey or ham with all the fixings, and lots of pie and Christmas sugar cookies for dessert. There are also those sugar cookies with Hersheys Kisses or chocolates stars on top, chocolate or almond bark surrounding peanuts, and numerous other sweets. I should stop before I get hungry.
And there's some eggnog to wash it down with, though only a few of us like its taste.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
What do you usually have for Christmas dinner? It varies from year to year. I think we are having roast, mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls, green beans or corn, and pies this year.
What do you bake at Christmas time? Sugar Cookies!!! And other kinds of cookies and cupcakes.
What do you cook at Christmas? Fudge, cinnamon rolls, and lots of other things.
What is your favorite Christmas treat? Sugar cookies, dark chocolate fudge, anything chocolate!
I baked sugar cookies on Saturday. They turned out great this time, nice and moist. Mom and my sisters help me decorate them, it was a lot of fun. There is only one problem with making sugar cookies, everyone wants to help decorate, but no one wants to help clean up the mess. Here are some pictures. The color is a little off because the lighting wasn't very good.

My kind of thread! The food is one of my absolute favourite parts of Christmas.
What do you usually have for Christmas dinner?
With the four of us... not sure?? I know we always have bubble bread at some point. But that ain't for supper. That's for breakfast, or late at night after church, when we open presents on christmas eve.
With everybody (which is what I thought of when seeing the question)
I'll be honest, even though it's the same every year, I had to ask Mom. And she gave me a list. So, this could be lacking in details, and such. But, it's the gist of it.
Oh, and we tend to kinda just snack on stuff the whole time we're together, then have supper, and then have presents. So, again... I could be leaving things out.
1) Pizza ryes
2) Deer Sausage (and crackers)- This is thanks to Papa, who shoots the deer.
3) Special Potatoes
4) Broccoli Casserole
5) Those tiny little hot dogs
6) Shrimp and cocktail sauce
7) stuff for sandwiches
8) 7 Layer Salad
9) Round Rye Dip
10) Soda, and other drinks. Though the one that I most think of when hearing "Christmas" is the Whiskey Slush. (which we couldn't really have til older, though we got to taste teensy tiny amounts as kids)
Again, this list isn't exhaustive. Christmas at home, or with the cousins and grandparents, etc usually includes SO much, that I can't think or type of them all. Sorry!
What do you bake at Christmas?
Me, personally? COOKIES!!!! I tend to help mom decorate the sugar cookies, and do the peanut butter balls on my own. (though as a kid, Mom and/or Mom & Sarah would help me)
What do you cook at Christmas?
Me, personally? I only make the pizza ryes. A lot of times, with help from Mom. Mom and my aunts do most of the cooking, to be honest. So, I'll have to learn before I strike out into the world on my own.
What is your favorite Christmas treat?
You mean, which ones I grab the most helpings of? Ask my mom to be sure, but if I had to guess... peanut butter balls and pizza ryes.

Can I get back to you on this one?
What foods help make Christmas special for you.
ALL OF 'EM!
Each of them remind me of gathering around with relatives... of when my grandma was alive... of loads of things. I mean, we've only lived close to relatives since 1996. Before that (my first 12 years of life), the only time we saw family was at Christmas. (unless you count my mom's older sis, her husband, and their kids coming out for Thanksgiving at OUR house; or the "every other year" trips to Florida) So, to me, the food makes me think of time with family. Plus it's just yummy... and it's really hard to have your fave foods only ONCE a year.
Other stuff not asked about:
1) Wassail- I first heard of this stuff through watching the high school's Madrigal dinners. But since then, Mom has started making some for home. It's basically like hot apple cider. (also the other stuff served during the dinner... including the black forest cake for dessert!)
2) Speaking of... apple cider and hot chocolate! Oh, and candy canes!
3) Chicken and Dumplings Meal- usually had sometime in early december, to celebrate Papa's, Beverly's, and my birthdays. (cause Papa LOVES them)
4) LIVER DUMPLINGS- I know it sounds gross, and normally I'd agree with you when talking of liver. But with this, it's different. And it might be an aquired (sp?) taste... but it's a family tradition passed down by my Dad's mom's family. We always joked when growing up, that anyone that wants to marry into the family would have to like them too. Anyway, we only have them for Nana W's (dad's mom) birthday and/or Christmastime. Then again, I could just say "Christmastime" cause her birthday is early/mid december... so we always have it then and either have leftovers or make more. Speaking of... we ain't had any yet this year, and it's one of my fave meals ever... WHERE IS IT?!
5) Peppermint Stick Ice Cream- Only comes once a year to the little Soda Shoppe (dr jazz) across the street from the playhouse. So, whenever I do "A Christmas Carol", I be sure to get some.
Cookies!
We, like most families, have certain ones that we make every year. Well, in our case, it's more like... we make a few kinds, Aunt Sue makes a few, Aunt Sandy makes a few, Papa makes a few... everyone exchanges, so everyone has all kinds.
Our House:
PEANUT BUTTER BALLS!!!!
wreaths (my sissy's fave)
sugar cookies
Aunt Susie:
lace cookies (we used to make them too, but we don't now)
oatmeal cookies (that aren't how you'd think... they're almost like the lace cookies, only rolled up and without the chocolate. sorta)
Aunt Sandy:
Horns- not sure how to describe them, but my uncle makes them
and I forget the other kind they bring
................
I hope I got everything in there... I might have left things out.
I'm back like I promised.
Our usually Christmas dinner is: ham, scalloped potatoes, broccoli rice au gratin, corn, rolls baked in the shape of a Christmas tree, and a Christmas tree shaped cake
I've helped with all of that at some point. I also make and/or help make a ton of cookies.
Our yearly cookie list:
Christmas trees (homemade slice and bake)
Bells (homemade slice and bake)
Peppermint pinwheels
Cutout sugar cookies
White morsel or Holiday morsel (if we can find them) cookies (basically chocolate chip cookies with other kind of chips substituted for the chocolate)
Snickerdoodles
Spritz (My sister and mom handle most of this one. The cookie press and I don't get along well)
Molasses / Gingerbread cookies (and often a house) (I just finished those up today.
Hershey Kiss cookies with the candy cane kisses
I have officially burned out on cookie baking for this year.
Gee, SL. I see from your post you hate mince pie. Or wait maybe that was LOVE mince pie. (At first I typed mice pie ) Nice recipe for it (mince pie).
And a recipe
Snickerdoodles
2 eggs 1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup shortening 1/4 cup applesauce
2 teaspoons cream of tartar 1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt 2 3/4 cups flour
Mix sugar and eggs. Add shortening. Stir in applesauce. Mix in the cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt. Stir in the flour. Chill dough. Roll in a mixture of 2 tablespoons sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon or in colored sugar. Bake at 400° 8-10 minutes until lightly browned but still soft. If your oven tends to be hot or the bottom of the cookies are cooking much faster reduce the temp to 300 - 350 and bake longer.

Hmmm, I'm getting hungry just rereading this thread.
Please note that our Christmas Countdown threads will be closing on Monday, January 9...but never fear! We look forward to having them again next December.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
I wanted to post these as "treats" in the Games and Blogs Christmas Party thread as a treat for the guests but I missed the deadline. I made these cakes because I had leftover cake batter and frosting from a Wilton Cake Decoration class I was taking.
