Camp NaNo 2012
It's that time of year again, where we brave writing-crazy souls decide to spend the free hours of our summers with pad and pencil (or keyboard and computer screen), churning out words to meet the deadline: 50,000 words in one month.
Many of you have already heard of NaNoWriMo, the writing contest that is held every November. But for those of you who haven't heard, November is not the only time the contest takes place. Camp NaNo is for those of you who would like to take place in all the crazy planning, late-night writing, word counting, word warring, and Nanoism-making fun during the summer months.
This year, Camp NaNo will be held twice. Once in June and again in August.
Have fun discussing! And have fun writing!

I heartily salute those who have decided to embark on 3 stories with 50k words each in the coming months of summer. All the best to you valiant soils!
I would love to do Camp NaNo, but seeing how I was so surprised June was in 2 days and that I have really no time until summer vacation, I might have to not participate in June. If I get an inspiration, I might be thinking of joining it in July or possibly joining it in August. Can that be done?

August will work. There is only going to be two Camp NaNo events, though. There won't be one running in July.

Well, I had been planning to do June's session of Camp NaNo ever since the beginning of this year. In April, I changed which plot I was going to use since I got a new shiny idea. I had characters. I had blog postz. I had thirteen chapters of a pretty detailed outline. And, wonder of wonders, I had that all-elusive thing: A TITLE!!!
And then today I decided to scrap my entire outline because of plotholes.
So... I have no idea what I'm doing now. I'm becoming even more convinced that I'm insane.

Yes, July was last year. They decided to space them out this year for the obvious reason to allow people to plan. *sighs* I wish June 1st would hurry up and get here cause I'm all ready to start. *fidgets impatiently with her novel document*

I'm doing CampNaNo, I did it last year, both July and August, and managed to win both times (though in August I barely made it, had to write 22,000+ words in one day, I was literaly glued to my computer, by the end my fingers could hardly move, but I made it )
I'm looking forward to this year, I didn't know it was going to be in June till about three days ago (thought it would be in July like last year), luckily for me I have a novel that I've been wanting to write for a long long time
It's Historical Fiction and it's set in the south of the U.S. a few years before the War in between the States, I've been researching a lot on the topic (ever since I was 14, which is when the idea for the novel first came to me)
The only thing that kinda worries me is I have exams in June and I'm not all that prepared for them I hope I'll be able to manage everything, I think I will, if I plan my time out
always be humble and kind
June this year is even busier for me than November usually is.
But my plan for this summer is to finish last November's NaNo novel. Its word count weighs in at about 56k but there are some long sections I outlined but haven't yet written, for various reasons. So I think I'll focus on that this summer.
A few ideas are already vying for attention for this year's November story.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
How many pages (roughly) is 50k words? and how much planning do you find that you all do for each story? I've heard about so many people doing nanowrimo (my cousin and my friend have done it two or three times each) and I've seen several people on here talking about it. I'd really like to give it a shot in August, but frankly it seems a little daunting!! Any specific suggestions for a first timer?
Thanks, and I hope it all goes well for those of you doing it in June!!

Hmm.. Sheroo I can't answer about planning for the story (since I don't tend to plan at all) but 50k is roughly 175-200 printed pages like in a published book. The actual length depends on how much dialogue you have (more dialogue = more paragraphs = more pages). The typical page in a word processing software contains around 600 words and a published book contains around 300 word per page so a rough estimate is to the take the manuscript and double the amount of pages to find the published length.
Suggestions for a first timer? Sit yourself down in the chair and keep fingers to keyboard until you've made the daily word count goal. Do this each day. It's a surefire way to win!
On a more serious note, write without caring how bad it is. Turn off your inner editor and just put words to page. If you get caught up with editing you will not finish in time. Word wars (which usually take over the NW chatroom all during NaNoWriMo) are also helpful. And the site Write or Die (http://writeordie.com/) is also helpful for keeping fingers moving and the words flowing.

Menelve, are those words per page stats based on using single spacing? I believe they are, based on how much I've been using double spacing lately. For double spacing, you get somewhere between 300 and 400 words per page. I didn't start using double spacing for most things outside the classroom until this past school year, but I thought that clarification was needed. I'm aware that single spacing may be the preference of most of the people here, so feel free to ignore this if you use single spacing in your documents.

Yes, 600 words would be single space in Word. For double spacing, there's only around 300 words per page.
Yeah, once you get into a double spacing habit for school papers, single space starts looking odd and unnatural.

If I remember that this exists, I might be able to start on the 4th, after my grad is finished. But we'll see. I'll need to think of something to write.
And I'm not going to be super fussy as to whether or not I get 50K written... It just might be a motivation to write *something*.

3 hours till Camp NaNoWriMo hits the US! I must get my nest feathered so I can be ready for midnight.
~Anna
Well, I'm mostly ready. I didn't do my novel outline yet, but I did do a basic outline for tonight's chapter. It's going to be a 30-chapter novel, so I can just do a chapter a day. My daily word goal will be 2K.
I got my synopsis and cover up, and also made a cover for a friend. Can't put up my user profile picture yet, because it's buggy.
Less than an hour and a half till we start writing here on my time.
~Riella
And that friend would be me. She made me an amazing cover. Thanks again Riella!
As for me, Camp began 2 1/2 hours ago! Writing, I mean editing, time!
