I saw A Great and Terrible Beauty at a library booksale and bought it to list on one of my bookswap sites. It definitely looked too modern for a Victorian setting.

I had to wait a couple hours yesterday evening for some repair work on my car so I read quite a bit more of Barchester Towers. It's getting much better as it goes on and I think it's going to end with four stars from me :)

I recently read The Eyre Affair for my English Novel class, and I really enjoyed it. I remember a lot of the book-thread people recommending the Thursday Next series some time ago, and I understand why. :) Fforde is such a genre-bender and the near-constant literary jokes and references are right up my alley. I'm hoping to read some of his other books sometime soon.

We are starting A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man this week, and I am surprised to say I'm enjoying it to some degree and not having nearly the trouble understanding James Joyce that I had when i read Dubliners two years back.

The only pleasure reading I've done in the past few months has been to read the first two books of the Riddle-Master trilogy. Due to classes, the third book remains unstarted by my bed until further notice. :( I love McKillip's style of describing and letting you have just enough of the details to fill in the world on the edges. It reminds me of Charles de Lint's book Harp of the Grey Rose which I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm looking forward to some final resolution in Harpist in the Wind.

I have a whole ton of books. I have taken to raiding the Young Adult section of the college library, with the eventual goal of reading all of their Lloyd Alexander novels. I also have Dracula, but I haven't started it yet.

I'm going through all the Jeff and Michael Shaara books right now. I was pleasantly surprised at how interesting they are, as I was expecting dull history.
But I love the format and everything - I've just gotten past the Revolutionary war and Mexican war one's so far.

Though I don't normally like romance, I'll be reading on of Jane Austen's novels for english class. I enjoy Austen's work quite a bit because there are so many good jokes in them! :D

I have gotten through I bit more of Wheel of Time. Its moving pretty slow...

I can't stand romance in most novels. There are few authors who write it well. Ted Dekker is one such author.
I just finished his novel, The Bride Collector and loved it.

I just read Helen Dumore's book "Ingo" and I loved it! I'm not huge on mermaids, but this book is awesome!
a quick synopsis of the book:

"By the Cornwall coast where Sapphire lives with her family, it's easy to hear the call of the sea. Too easy. When the sea called to Sapphy's father, he vanished from her life. When the sea called to her brother, he started disappearing for hours on end. And now the sea is calling to Sapphy, and she feels its pull more strongly than she's ever felt anything in her life."

it's awesome :)

I recently read The Eyre Affair for my English Novel class, and I really enjoyed it.

I enjoyed it too when I listened to it on audiobook :). Fforde is a talented and creative author. I haven't finished the series yet, but the two I've read so far have been good. You just have to be careful with some of his language and ideas underneath the plot.

I'm glad you are liking McKillip so much too! She has a lot of titles and most are excellent (a few are slightly mediocre for her, but still very good). I haven't read a McKillip book in awhile... hmm.

I finished and reviewed Barchester Towers. Good stuff, and I'll be reading more of Trollope. But I'm not in a rush to.

Hi Brisa! Haven't seen you around here before :). I hope you get a good haul at the bookstore!

I have been meaning to ask here about a title I can't remember. It was a story set in biblical times. I don't remember if Christ was in it or not, but I rather think He was. Anyhow, there is a Jewish (?) village that is pillaged and the children are hidden away in some mountainside caves. They have to learn to survive without their parents, and one boy (Joshua?) becomes their leader. One of the older girls is captured and sold as a slave, and the children try to raise money to buy her back. I remember that she ends up working as a weaver. Does this description ring a bell with anyone?

(It's not The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare (love that one too though!).)
