[Closed] How old were you when you first read the books?

There's no doubt about it - the Narnia series is for all ages, and C.S. Lewis intended it to be that way. As he himself said, "No book is really worth reading at the age of ten which is not equally – and often far more – worth reading at the age of fifty and beyond."

So my question is, what age were you when you first read the books and/or were introduced to the series? And are they still as special to you as they were then?

I was around 5 or 6 when my dad read LWW to me, but it wasn't until a few years later that I discovered there were in fact more books. I was so excited to find out that the adventure wasn't over! I devoured the entire series, and completely loved it (and still do)! I love them all, but LWW still holds a special place in my heart - because it was the first I read, and also because of the significance of Aslan's sacrifice.

What about you?

I first got the LWW read to me by a teacher in school when I was 10. I loved it so much I went and bought it and then like you discovered there were more and went and bought them. For me the two best things about the books were Aslan - for all the obvious reasons and Narnia itself - I loved it's purity and how beautiful it felt when I read about it. I also loved that it felt like a place that you could be yourself and noone would judge you for it As a teenager, that was a great escape from the reality of teenage judgements and the effort of trying to 'fit in'

:) I was always a Narnia fan when I saw the BBC when I was about one. When I was 5 I heard the tapes in KG from the books, I listened to them over and over. When i was 8 I finally read them to myself. It was something I grew up with and happy that I did. :D ;)

I was 17 years old when I first read the books.

I was 9 years old when I first read about them in a Christian family magazine, though.

English is not my first language. The magazine was in English. The books I read are in English and I still have them. I have seen a couple of the books in my library system in my first language. But I do not know how popular they are in parts of the world that speak this language, nor how much do they circulate.

My third grade teacher read LWW to us (about the only nice thing she ever did for us :S ). So I was about 9 years old; however, I had no idea that there were other books in the series until I was about 13, when I stumbled across them in our Christian bookstore.

I read them when I was about ten. I had seen BBC's LWW and PC and heard Focus' MN and LWW before that, so I knew the story for the most part. HHB was the first one I read where I didn't know what would happen.

Every time this question comes up, I get to thinking. :-?

And to be quite honest, I can't really remember a time without Narnia! I know that when I was small, I read my dad's copies. And around the time I was ten (maybe?), I got my own set for christmas. I remember growing up with the BBC films, and the cartoon LWW. And I remember hearing the Focus on the Family Radio Theatre productions, when I was a little older. (jr high or high school age?? I forget...) I'm not entirely sure if the books were first read to me, before I could read them myself. I'd have to ask. (keep in mind, though... that I taught myself to read at age three. so who really knows. :p )

Good question, I just wish I had an answer for you. Then again, what matters is that I found it... not when I found it. If that makes sense. ;)

It's helped me through so much, and I thank God that He gave the idea to Jack to write it. YAY for the gift of writing! (which says things we cannot) *happy sigh*

I just started reading it not too long ago...about a year ago. I'm a late bloomer but all the same age is nothing compared to the beautiful complexity of these books!

My favorite is Voyage of the Dawn Treader...love the action and the adventures! :)

I was 42, and they are still special. Even more so with the visualization of the books into the films by people who care as much about them as the fans.

The Narnia books are pretty advanced reading for being your first book.

I first read LWW when I was about 7 and half years old. Then ABC showed the BBC series for the first time. During this period, I read PC and VDT and eventually found the rest of the Narnia books in the local library. I read HHB and LB last, when I was roughly 9 years old. I'm now 26 and still love them.

sandyentersNarnia, it's never too late! C.S. Lewis intended these books to be read by all ages, at all stages in life. The good thing is, you read them! In this case, the saying "better late than never" is definitely true! :D
