A new report claims that Charli XCX is no longer in the running for Jadis and that Emma Mackey, Margaret Qualley, & one other (unnamed) actress are preparing to test for the role of Jadis.
"Tollers, there is too little of what we really like in stories. I am afraid we shall have to try and write some ourselves." - C.S. Lewis
Thanks, Doom! It’s good to have some news right now and it’ll be interesting to see if one of these possibilities ends up being our Jadis.
It would make sense to me if the third name on the list was Mikey Madison or maybe Daisy Ridley - two actresses previously connected with the role - since they are all of a very similar age, height, build, hair colour, etc.
Personally, I was kind of warming to the idea of Charli XCX as there is just something so compelling and interesting about her unique visual aesthetic, but I think my heart can only take one crazy wildcard casting per movie, and therefore if GG is going all in on an "out there" Aslan casting, then there is something nicely reassuring about the Jadis role casting very much to type.
Two eminently qualified and experienced actresses. I've seen them in a few bits and pieces, and whilst clearly none of them were on anyone's fan casting lists, it's nice just to have almost nothing to say about them, other than "yep, that makes sense"... Which after a crazy few weeks is just amazing to be able to say!
As some of you already know, I was never fully sold on Charli XCX as Jadis; nothing against her as a performer, but acting-wise, I just couldn’t picture her carrying the kind of gravitas and experience that a character like Jadis requires.
Emma Mackey and Margaret Qualley, though? Now that makes sense. Both of them have this layered, magnetic screen presence. If I was to pick out of these two though I think I'd lean more to Emma. I can really imagine Emma conveying naturally that cunning and danger as well as the sophistication and depth. I can also see her being deceptively enticing to Edmund in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. But again, either way, these are both really interesting choices.
Here's some clips of Emma's acting;

Can someone tell me which actress is the one with the earrings (in the photos in the Narniaweb article?) I like the look of her better though I'm sure either could do a great job.
I'm guessing that Saoirse Ronan is definitely not going to play Jadis now since they seem to specifically want a brunette. (I guess she could dye her hair or wear a wig.) I'm good with that since, as I mentioned, I didn't think the role really played to her strengths as an actress. Also, I really do think black hair makes the most sense for the character, no offense to fans of Barbara Kellerman's or Tilda Swinton's White Witches. The combination of white skin, red lips and black hair is just classic.
For better or worse-for who knows what may unfold from a chrysalis?-hope was left behind.

@col-klink The actress with the earrings is Margaret Qualley.

Doesn't Barbara Kellerman's White Witch have black hair?
@icarus I thought she had red hair. Now I'm confused.

It's more brown than black I'd say 🤣
It looks red to me.

On inspection, it looks like Kellerman's hair was changed a little bit when she played the White Witch, but it struck me as red when I saw it on VHS as a kid and that's the impression that stuck with me.

My red haired daughter says Barbara Kellerman's hair is "definitely brown"! 🤣
Back to the topic at hand - interesting to see a potential move in a different direction from the rumours about Charli XCX - testing actresses (with more film credits) instead. Hmm... Interesting to see what becomes of this news.
*~JESUS is my REASON!~*
Exactly, that early casting rumours shift as the process evolves is always so interesting; being 'eyed' for a role not always meaning talks went anywhere. Charli might’ve passed, or Gerwig and/or Netflix may have decided to pivot creatively. And yes, the apparent move to actual screen tests, which suggests they're deep in decision mode now, is always an exciting sign.
Again, when it comes to these specific name, I'm still more warmed to the idea of Emma, not because she's British or anything, and I think Margaret (for sure) as the talent and capability, but in terms of what I've seen from them so far in their careers, something about Emma has the edge.
Gonna attach those clips again because I think they're both good, accessible examples;
