[Closed] Susan and Caspian dance at Caspian's coronation

A graphic, which is also my experiment of a new style. The sketch was handmade by traditional pencil and paper and scanned, converted into a brush in Photoshop, thus creating a lineart, and colored in Photoshop, with use of my faithful tablet :)

The style of the drawing is a mix of realism and a sketchy feeling, not everything is sharp, precise and clear, I always wanted to try such a style and I hope I succeeded at least partially

I've wanted to do this drawing for a long, long time, and I'm very satisfied with how it came out! :D

And before anyone says this - yes, I know their hands end at sleeves and not palms, and yes, that's intentional, to provide an 'unfinished' at the top of the picture, so that it will match the same effect at the bottom ;)

I hope you enjoy! Comments are great! :D

Beginte, that's gorgeous! :) Their hair looks so touchable.(yeah, weird feedback, but feedback still :p ) I really like the pink-ish "glowing" effect you used near the bottom makes it look very dream-like. :) It's just so awesome!! Oh,yeah, and I also like the way their sleeves and Caspian's tunic looks. Goodness, the whole thing just looks so real. :)
Good job!

A very nice piece, Beginte! The hair and Caspian's crown are my favorite parts.

Susan's head, however, looks very awkward. Her right arm looks out of place as well. This takes away from the realism. If you can work out the positioning so that it looks more natural, the piece will definitely improve!

Good job, Beginte!

Lark, thank you so much! Haha, the feedack about the hair is not weird at all, the hair 'touchability' ( ;) ) is something I always try to achieve! Thank you for the comment on that! Pink-ish? Uh-oh, no good... it was supposed to be beige... *scratches head* Oh, well, too late now, and I'm glad it works in pink-ish as well! :) I'm happy you like the clothes, I worked hard on them! Thanks a lot!

sweetlilgurlie, thanks! Ah, the crown I cared the least about, and of course the sneaky thing had to come out good. Not that I'm complaining! ;) And well, to me Susn happens to be just right, since she's in the middle of a twirl... that's very hard to draw, believe me... so maybe because I know she's in a twirl, to me she looks good.

Thanks again, guys! :D

Beginte, that's BEAUTIFUL! !!!! You have such drawing talent you never cease to amaze me. I am excited every time you create a new masterful work of art! This piece is a star in your collection of pieces!! :D (comes off her speech box, and decides to freak like any giddy girl) WONDERFUL! It has a very dreamy feeling, or, what I call, a 'memory feeling'. Like this person is remembering what took place in the past. But at the same time it's real, real enough to touch, see, and know. I can just hear the ball music as they dance together. Your sketch of Caspian is perfect in every proportion. His jeweled crown, and his tunic are very well done. Though, my favorite part about him is his expression. It's one of, quiet, shy, pleasure. He looks happy to see her happy.

Their hair though, is sooooooo real. It's rich color, strands, and the way it falls about is very nice. Susan's dress looks just like the movie. Good job on that. Though I can see where sweeetlilgurlie comes from when she says at first glance Susan's face looks awkward, after staring at it for sometime I can see what you mean. She is in the middle of a spin, so naturally her head would be held differently then normal. This is a very beautiful piece Beginte! Five claps!! :D

yes, I know their hands end at sleeves and not palms

But, if they did end with the full hand, would the hands be clasped? Or touching fingertip to fingertip? Or not at all? To me, it looks like they're meant to be holding hands while Caspian spins her around. :) Looking at it like that, Su's hand just vanishes off into thin air in the wrong spot and I think that contributes to a feeling that something is 'off' in her pose.

You've done a fabulous job with the colouring and sense of movement. I hope you do more like this, it works really well. :D

Out of curiosity, what's the difference in look between turning the lineart into a brush, and putting the lineart layer on multiply?

Excellent work! I really like the clothes, the folds and shadows make them looks very real. And Susan's hair! It's fantastic. But I'm not sure of the shape of her head, even if she is spinning... If there was a little bit more of cheek/jaw showing near her mouth, the lower part of her head wouldn't look so thin compared to the cheekbones. (That is, unless you meant to make her face very heart-shaped. If that is the case, pay no attention to the criticism :D .) The part of the jaw near her neck is perhaps a tiny bit too massive, nearly masculine. But I really like the shadowing near her eyes! And the coloring of the jewels in the crown is very good. The colours of the whole picture are well chosen, not too bright.

Great work!

Thank you! :D

lover of narnia, aw, thank you so very much! You are so very sweet and generous, thank you for all the lovely compliments! Oh, I wanted to make it soft and delicate, yet real, a fragment of what once happened and was beautiful... and can still be, as long as is remembered, or maybe it still is, because maybe it is still happening in the present :) I'm very happy you like Caspian's design and pose, I was surprised that it came out so nice! Oh, I'm happy you see Caspian's expression this way, I wanted it to be like that! Oh, I love drawing the hair, I'm so glad you like how it came out on this picture! Yes, I wanted to make Susan's dress like the one in the movie, since it's supposed to be after the coronation ride, and I imagine Caspian's tunic could look like that under that white doublet he rode in. I'm glad that Susan appears normal when considering she's in the middle of the spin, she's turning so her face is turned to a different angle than the rest of the body. Thanks so very much again!

Meltintalle, thank you! Oh, their hands are linked for a twirl... the back of Susan's palm is more or less directed at Caspian's face and their fingers are intertwined. I wanted to leave it unfinished, so that it matches their unfinished silhouettes below and keeps up with the sketchy feeling. I'm glad you liked the colors, I was surprised when they came out like I wanted :) Oh, the difference (to me, at least), is that you convert the sketch into a brush and click it on a transparent layer, and then do the color work on the layer below - this way, all the lines of the sketch are perfectly intact :)

Lark, ah, good, I thought it was my computer and I was beginning to wonder what to do! I'm glad you saw it in beige :)

Mehinen, thank you! I enjoy drawing clothes and hair, I'm happy you like them in this drawing! Oh, as per Susan's face, I was just sketching... and I was looking at a picture of her while doing it, she really has a rather heart-shaped face from that angle... Oh, I'm glad you like the jewels in the crown, the best part is that I did it hurriedly and without much care, and then was surprised it didn't come out too bad! :)

Thanks so very much again, guys!

A nice drawing Beginte. Linework looks good, has a nice stylized feel. The detailing in the clothing and hairwork is superb (you never disappoint :) ). Character likenesses look great. In terms of anatomy, I want to point out their necks. Caspian seems to be lacking one, but honestly, I didn't really pick this up until going over the piece numerous times (doesn't really bother me either). Susan's neck however, feels really stiff and straight. From this angle, there should be more of a line connecting the neck and chin, a nice clear contour line (the head and neck aren't really separated from each other, this sketch kind of indicates that the are). I know, I know what you intended on the arms, and I get that, but I'm gonna slam you on that one. I don't really get the sense that Caspian and Susan are holding hands, it just seems that they merge together at the wrist. The way Susan's arm is positioned and bent, it feels like you would see more of her fingers wrapping around Caspian's wrist (instead of holding hands). I totally get the fading effect with the BG (as is with the bottom of the image), but I think there needs to be more of the blending to be as effective as the bottom. This also means that Caspian's crown should have some fade with it as well, for continuity with the bottom fades (but who wants to take away from the crown :) ). The BG design looks good as well (coloration and design) and is very effective in encompassing and giving extra "value" to the character art. Nice work .

Thank you, guys, I'm very glad you like the picture :)

Lion's Emblem, thanks a lot! I'm glad you like the coloring, usually I sit and grumble for a long time before finally all the colors click together for me, but on this picture each first try was somehow the right one :) As per the necks, well, Caspian is holding his right arm up, therefore the folding of the clothing takes away any glimpse of neck - if I tried to put it there, now, that would make him like a giraffe or neck as thick as his head ;)) As per Susan's, I get what you mean, but well, I can't fix it now... sigh... About the hands - yes, they hold each other... since Caspian is twirling her, the back of his palm would be directed towards the viewer, and the back of Susan's palm - more or less at his face, I can't really explain in other words how they hold it... plus - hey! It's a picture, meant to look sketchy, like an illustration for a children's book. It shouldn't have eveything finished tip-top and look like a photo, where would be sense in that? :) The same applies to the crown and the reason I did't fade it - the fact that it's a drawing, not a photograph, lets us use our imagination and notice some things and omit others... come on, you know what I mean, I hope :) This piece was not at all meant to be even, realistic and following the rules of a camera snapshot where all things are cut to the level... that's just my adoration for illustrations in children's books where there are no rules, just like imagination itself :)

narnia_lover127, thanks! Aw, I'm happy you like Susan's dress, I was trying to make it as much alike to the one in the movie at the coronation as possible, problem was, we never get to see it from the back! And thanks, I'm glad you like the picture.

GeorgieXOXOsmile, thank you! Oh, that was my intention, I wanted this to be like a picture from the children's book! Thanks so much for thinking it looks like one! Oh, Susan's hair gave me some pain, but I'm glad the final result is nice :)

Thanks again, guys, maybe I'll make more pictures in this style :)

Thank you. Well, we are permitted to like different things, aren't we? I enjoyed the thread in the movie, but I'm not burning pictures of Ramandu's Daughter in fanatic fits, I very much enjoyed the first love of Caspian and Susan, an experience that is all a part of becoming of age, which was one of the themes of Prince Caspian, highly accentuated in the movie. Very bittersweet and pretty.

As per the picture itself, I simply thought such a scene in the film would be nice, a ball at Caspian's coronation, and I chose to draw Caspian and Susan :)
