[Closed] VDT in 3D - The Verdict

I thought it would be interesting to get peoples opinions on the 3D conversion, as i'm sure there are alot of people out there perhaps unsure about which version to go and see, and it would perhaps be useful for them to gather opinions on whether they felt it was worth it or not.

Anyway, for me the opening scenes of the movie the 3D effect looked somewhat jarring and awkward. It was much the same feeling i got when viewing the teaser trailer for the first time. There was just something about the startling clarity of the digital picture and the 3D effect didn’t really sit well with me. Part of me thought it might be due to the incongruity between the high-tech nature of 3D and the period setting of the movie, however i recall feeling much the same way about most of the non-CGI scenes in Avatar which also looked somewhat odd, like cardboard cut-outs in a theatre production, rather than a fully realised 3D world. That said, once the movie got going and we moved into Narnia, the oddness seemed to go away. That could of been because i had got used to the effect by this point, or that the 3D effect simply worked better with the more CGI-filled world of Narnia.

For the most part i found the 3D effects to be generally pretty solid - there didn't seem to be any of the typical complaints of 3D conversion, at least to my untrained eye. For example, given that the movie was already shot in Digital in did not suffer from any blurriness and the fact that the movie was already shot with such a vivid colour palette meant that the slight dulling effect that the tinted 3D glasses produce was not as significant as it has been reported on other 3D conversions. In fact, I dare say the tinted lenses on the 3D glasses helped tone down some of the more vibrant in-your-face colour work going on with the movie and perhaps gave the proceedings a slightly more realistic look, but maybe that’s just me.

Anyway, there were some nice visual flourishes with the 3D throughout, such as on the Water Spirits, but for the most part the 3D effect seemed fairly redundant. It was fine, but i didn't really feel like it was adding anything significant. That is however until the movie got to the Sea Serpent battle within the Dark Island. I personally thought the 3D effects throughout the Dark Island sequence were exceptional. They managed to tread that fine line between the 3D being redundant and the 3D being gimmicky. Instead it did what good 3D should do and really did help to immerse you in the scene, putting you right in the action. There was one shot in particular near the start of the attack where the sea serpent rears itself up and you really had to feel sorry for the kids sitting in the front row, because it was a pretty terrifying sight. I honestly thought the scene was quite fantastic in 3D and ultimately well worth it, if only for that.

I agree! :D
For me, the 3D was not intrusive, nor was it brilliant. You did not notice it much during the first 1/2 apart form the occasional 'green mist' shot, however towards the end I felt the advantages of 3D where rather well used, and it really came into it's own, submerging you in the world of ramandu's island and the dark island in particular. the omph added by the 3D in the already SPECTACULAR sea serpent battle where as icarus says, worth seeing it in 3D for (I LOVED that scene, and generally I'm not much of a monsters/battle-scenes fan at all. But it was so well executed with the amazing CGI and the help of 3D that it was absolutely irresistible)

my verdict? see it in 3D if you're unsure or have the opportunity, if not don't worry, it's a shame but you're not missing out on too much :)

Grief for the movies made me abandon narniaweb...but I'm so glad to be back!

I only have seen the movie in 2D and probably only will, as there are no 3D theaters in my area. Although a few reviewers have made quips, the 3D conversion sounds like it isn't awful, so I don't really care about it. I'll decide whether I like it or not when I see how much it affects the box office.

I'm going to see the 3D tomorrow but only because I can't wait for the 2D which is next Saturday. Fingers crossed that I can get to the theatre on time and nab good seats! (I'll be watching with a non-Narnian friend). Will post my review here tomorrow night! :D

I didn't mind the 3D effects, and so I voted good. But for a truly amazing effect I would have felt more splashed where I was sitting, in the rows further back, and would have then asked for a reduction in my water rates. ;)

Oh, and despite all those warnings about reusing the spectacles, I left mine in Narnia. :D

I have now seen previews in both 3D and 2D.

I'm not sure how well each will perform, but I found it easier to watch in 2D - and this is what opens on 9th (this week).

2D was just a "normal" movie. The 3D was a special treat, with enhanced photographic details. I enjoyed 2D just as much. I haven't seen many others to compare it with, but it seemed to be fun without being too extreme.

There, shining in the sunrise, larger than they had seen him before, shaking his mane (for it had apparently grown again) stood Aslan himself.

I watched it in 3D and I found myself forgetting that it's in 3D most of the time. It's good that they didn't do anything distracting with 3D but honestly, I don't believe 3D add much to the film. I doubt anyone would be missing much watching it in 2D.

I know I will watch it again and hopefully in 2D (evil distributors have been limiting/ not releasing 2D version of films that are available in 3D from where I live, 3D version of VDT was released on 12/2 while 2D version is supposed to be released on 12/9 [-( forcing anyone who's interested in watching the film early to watch it in 3D)

Hope they're more 2D screens on 12/10 available in the States than 3D. Hate being forced to watch one over the other. 3D makes me dizzy.

I thought the 3D was good! They definitely did a good job at converting. Proves you don't have to shoot in 3D, you only need to give yourself enough time to convert it. ;)

Nothing special, but it was pretty good I thought. I too found it seemed a bit weird at first, but then I either got used to it, or the movie got clearer.

I saw it in 3D, and I really didn't find any problems with it. I thought it was very well done, with only a few places where it seemed blurry. But in general, I got used to the 3D and enjoyed it quite a lot! (And I kept my glasses as a souvenir...shhh. ;)) )

I was extremely glad to see that the 3D was in fact NOT gimmicky--huge relief there! I enjoyed it immensely--I'm no huge fan of 3D in general but I wanted to see Narnia in 3D because I thought, if they get it right, it will add just the right touch of magic to it! And it did! Overall I am enormously pleased with it. I know some people think that the limited 3D effects seem redundant but I didn't mind, because I don't like 3D that much anyway. I have one complaint--the snow scene with Lucy should've been in-your-face snowflakes! I saw Polar Express in 3D multiple times and the snow scenes were breathtaking---seems like VDT missed the boat (pun intended) on that one.

I didn't like the 3D. I didn't feel as if it added to the movie at all, and since it wasn't filmed in 3D or made specifically for it, it didn't impress me too much.

It's also extremely annoying when the glasses slip down your nose right in a great moment. :|

On the plus side, the camera didn't seem to be near as jerky/bumpy in 3D as it did in 2D. But then again, a lot of it was really, really blurry and overall wasn't worth the extra money....

I really liked it in 3D!!!!!!!!! I thought it gave us a new look at Narnia. Although you did not notice it in some parts. It was still cool to see the Dawn Treader in 3D!!!!! ;) ;) ;) I thought it was relly cool when they were under water and the furniture was floating. Really cool affect :D :D :D

Overall I really enjoyed watching it in 3D!!!!!! :p

The 3D was sort of hit and miss for me. On the plus side, I didn't feel my money was totally wasted (as I did with, say, Toy Story 3, where there didn't seem to be anything that was really enhanced by seeing it in 3D) -- here there were some gorgeous moments that really used the technology well, such as the snow spell, the appearance of the ship itself, etc. But then there were some moments where I couldn't tell what was going on because of the 3D; this was especially the case during fight sequences, and whenever there was something moving near the front of of the screen. Thankfully, there was nothing gimmicky like something jumping out at you.
