Here's the thread to discuss all the wonderful (and not so wonderful) camera work of the Narnia movies.

Which movie would you say was best filmed? What camera techniques worked best and worst for the films? What is your opinion of the "shaky camera" effect in VDT?

Discuss away!

I think PC had the best camera work. My favorite was the opening sequence when Caspian is being chased across Narnia. LWW had good camera work too, but PC definitely surpassed it. I think VDT's colors were too bright. I wasn't really a fan of that bit of camera work.

I would agree that Caspian has the best camera work. It had some very nice sweeping shots.

Wardrobe I would probably place second. There were a lot of amazing visuals in that film.

Voyage didn't have a lot of noteworthy sweeping shots. Mostly short establishing shots, from what I can remember. I wish that the editors had given us a little more time just to stare at Narnia itself.

I agree that PC has the best camera work. The most memorable shots are:

1. looking down at the gorge- when the Pevensies were trying to get to Aslan's how and the camera just falls down. I loved it.

2. Aslan knocks over the Telmarine- when Lucy is sent into the woods to try to find Aslan and there is one Telmarine left. The camera shows the lion and then shows him leaping from under him. It looked very cool to me.

I Love PC's Camera work! Easily the best of the three in my own opinion.
I love the way the opening chase with Caspian was filmed!
I don't know why, but because of the way PC was filmed, Narnia felt like a bigger place then in LWW.
I didn't mind the shaky camera effect in VDT, because I don't think it ever got out of hand or distracting. :)

There was a shakey camera effect in VDT? Never noticed :P Guess I can't say I minded it then... probably used to it since I watch a lot of documentaries.

I guess I never notice things like camera work. :p Especially if it's a very good movie. But even in VDT, I didn't notice a thing.

Well. I absolutely despise the Shaky cam, but I didn't even remember it being in VDT. Thus, I can only conclude that it must have been done rather well--either that, or my memory's gone faulty. You can clearly see which option I would prefer. :P Um, over all though, VDT had some very nice sweeping shots, but nothing of especial note anywhere else.

PC had some great tracking and angle shots (such as the gorge, which Lily mentioned), and nothing ever pulled me out of the story. LWW, on the other hand, had a couple moments where one had a definite "this is shot from a camera" thought. Mind you, LWW wasn't bad by any standard (...okay, maybe not any), but not quite at PC's level. So... obviously, the crown goes to PC, and I'd put that down to more experience. Also, in some ways it's a more intimate story line, which lends itself to more interesting camera work.

It cannot have been distracting - I'm another one who didn't even notice it.

I guess it's something that can be rather irritating if it does get out of hand.
It can be used for a certain effect, but then it should make sense as to why that effect is needed. As I don't know when it was used in this case, I don't know why it was needed either ...

I'll add my vote to the "PC had the best camera angles" club. :P Some of those shots were just breathtaking. I felt when watching it, as though the cameras really pulled me into the movie. During several of the wider shots of the castle, or of Narnia in General, I felt like I was there. They really were lovely. :)

Both PC and LWW have some great sweeping visuals of Narnia. Those shots are not only breathtaking and magical, but from what I can remember (haven't seen the movies in a while!) pretty much all of them had this realistic "I can feel like it's a real place" feeling to them.

As some here have already noted, many of the shots that looked up on, or down on something in PC were some of the best ones. They captured what was happening in the movie from different points of view; not just from a general camera view sitting off to the side.

LWW, had a couple moments where one had a definite "this is shot from a camera" thought.

Ditto this. ^^ While lots of the movie was really good, I agree there were times when I went "Oh, ok.. not really feeling it here." with certain scenes. In fact, I actually drove my mom insane while watching LWW with her once - I wouldn't shut up about what looked real and what looked fake! :P

As for VDT? I admit, I still haven't seen it yet (ducks from flying objects) so I can't comment on any camera angles, sorry!

I agree with TheGentleWarrior in that PC has the best camera work. I just watched PC and the opening shots are great. VDT I think lacks good camera moves but they do have a few when eustace is a dragon. and LWW is right in the middle.

it looks like must of us think that PC is the best LWW is number 2 and VDT is the worst

PC, hands down, they had some very special rigs and cranes they used when filming it. Long, sweeping shots and some truly epic angles.
examples:
Camera going down the gorge.
Camera zooming up during the battle, while Susan battles some guys (They imported the highest crane rig they could find just for that shot)
Camera shot of Caspian riding over the bridge at the castle at the very beginning, while camera slowly swoops down.
Long camera swoop during the WW scene, with the camera going through the ice.
Camera following the Telmarines charging cavalry.
Edmund on the gryphon flying above Miraz castle after the attack, seeing the results of the attack.

For a long time, the PC super trailer has been one of my all time favourite trailers ever, and I think I just realized why: It showcases so many of my favourite and epic shots of PC, although some of the long camera swoops are considerably shortened.

Angle from behind the Centaur's legs briefly when walking in front of camera at Dancing Lawn meet or shot from when all the Narnians are staring at the castle at night on edge of forest about to start the castle raid.

These spring to mind straight away for me.

But i have watched PC the most out of the three. B-)

Just my kind of topic!

Camera shots I liked:
PC: The sweeping shot over the courtyard of Miraz's castle, in the retreat
PC: The camera in the shield during the duel.
LWW: The match cuts (matching the postion on the screen of simillar looking objects from one scene to another) between the battle and Susan & Lucy with Aslan in the Witch's castle. Then finally they meet.
VDT: The underwater shot when the kids get into Narnia

The camera work in LWW and PC was wonderful, no complaints. VDT on the other hand was terrible, save a few scenes and shots. Why was it shaking so much? I don't think the effect really makes things more "realistic" to the audience, it just makes it harder to watch. Good thing I don't get dizzy watching movies.
