Greta Gerwig Working on How to ‘Break the Whole Arc’ of Netflix’s Narnia

I've been going mad trying to figure all this out! My current musings are...

Greta is clearly instrumental in building the whole project, under Mark Gordon and Amy Pascal. She's only going to direct feature films, because that's what she does, and she's only going to direct what she's written- hence the project will kick off with two of her movies.

Now, for ages I was convinced that these two would be The Magician's Nephew and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, for reasons that have already been discussed at length. I still think this is highly plausible and it's what I would do. Initially, I couldn't see any other plausible explanation for green lighting TWO movies from the get go. As @gymfan15 referred to on Talking Beasts, it's highly likely that Magician's Nephew will feature early on in this project, given how easily Greta spoke about it on the Variety Awards Circuit podcast (unless she really is a massive Narnia geek!). As we know, building a consistent cinematic world from Narnia is no mean feat!

However, I was then completely thrown by What's On Netflix reporting that their sources claimed early this year that she'll start with The Silver Chair. Now of course that might be wrong, debunked, or that plan may have changed since then? ...BUT the rumour must have come from somewhere! It must have been the plan at some stage, even if it's not now.

So... could it be that Greta will do The Silver Chair FIRST, and The Magician's Nephew SECOND?? This raises many questions.

"Why?". Perhaps Netflix don't want to produce feature film adaptations of stories already adapted by Walden, thereby avoiding direct comparisons and competition. By doing TSC then TMN they 'continue' adapting what hasn't yet been adapted, leaving room to go full-pelt on a long-form TV series. The Netflix TV series can then do LWW, HHB?, PC, VDT (The Pevensie Series) with a ton of extra detail, world building and potential embellishments (not too many I hope!).

While this plan has merits, of course it would then shoot themselves in the foot, somewhat, in keeping actor consistency between projects, messing up TSC ending, TLB etc.

As a former Film Production student and long-time Narnia fan, I'll be fascinated with whatever approach they're taking. Narnia is kind of a poisoned chalice for film producers, so I don't envy them trying to square the impossible circle and I will follow with keen interest, whether the final products be good or terrible!

What do others think? Am I completely off-the-wall, here?!

Great thoughts!

That report from What's on Netflix is quite odd and seems to be contradictory to Stuber and Gerwig's recent comments. I'm inclined to believe it's outdated information given what we know now.

Ditto! That's part of what makes anticipating Narnia films so fun 🤗
