[Closed] Accents in VDT

I was thinking the other day, will Caspian still have an accent in VDT? And will the other Telmarines still have their accents?
I think it would be interesting if you could tell who was a Telmarine and who isn’t just by their accent.
I don’t know if it makes a difference, but in PC their were a lot more characters that had accents, in VDT Caspian is one of the only ones (unless you count some of the crew and the lost lords) who speaks with an accent, would it be distracting if only he speaks with an accent?
Maybe they will tone down his accent?

So what do you think, should they continue with the Telmarine accent or totally do away with it?
Will it be distracting if only some people have accents and others don’t?

I voted LOVE IT KEEP IT! I think it would be strange if Caspian didn't have an accent and maybe even kinda distracting. It would be weird if his accent just randomly faded over 3 years. I like accents in Narnia it makes Narnia feel bigger and more like our world. I think not only should Caspian keep his accent but also the accents should vary from island to island. IMO that would make it more realistic.

Definitely keep it. They've kept the Mediterranean/Spanish look of the Telmarines, so I doubt they'll drop the accent.

I could be wrong on this, but I thought I read somewhere that they had done away with the accent. Can't remember where I had read it though.

Personally I don't really mind, I never cared much for the accents in PC, I much prefer the British accents. Consistency is nice, but you COULD explain it away by saying Caspian picked up the Narnian's accents, although it is a bit far fetched.

I was thinking of that too. :p
I think the audience could except that explanation better if they considered toning it down instead of just doing away with it completely. :)

I think they should keep the accent. It just needs to be toned down. I thought it was way too strong in Prince Caspian, sometimes being quite distracting.

I sincerely hoped hope this was an unreliable source you heard from :( I will be very sad :(( if everyone is british in this film. I have nothing against the british but a world full of them and only them would just be weird. I like diversity.

I wouldn't mind not seeing (lol, hearing from) the accent again... it was lame to begin with. For the sake of consistency, however, I would be more than willing to hear it in VDT, but toned down a bit. It was kinda obnoxious in PC.

I think the reason I disliked Caspian's accent in PC was that it was fake, and seemed forced and unnatural a lot of the time, which is was. I didn't mind the other actors accents, as they were speaking with their natural accents. Hopefully with more time, and Ben already being used to the accent it will sound more natural in VDT.

I could be wrong on this, but I thought I read somewhere that they had done away with the accent. Can't remember where I had read it though.

I don't recall hearing any particular news either way about the accent. I know alot of us had theorised in the past that they may do away with it, particularly back when the castings for Lord Rhoop, Lord Bern and Lord Drinian were announced, all with very un-Telmarine looking actors in the roles. But i don't think they've ever said anything specific about the accent, at least not that i'm aware of.

Of course since then, as bkey said earlier, they have announced a whole load of other ship crew members, the vast majority of whom conform very much to the Telmarine aesthetic established in the last film, with many of the actors being of Mediterranean heritage themselves. So i think it's safe to say that the concept of the Telmarine's having a specific ethnicity and accent will still be present in the film. It's not like they would have any of the actor's speaking in their native Australian accents - that wouldn't make much sense in the context of Narnia' s pseudo-historical world - so they are all going to have to affect an accent of some sort anyway.

The only question mark would be with Ben Barnes. I can't imagine they would ditch the accent for Caspian altogether, as it would not only be very distracting for him to have suddenly lost his accent, but it would also make him seem totally out of place with the rest of his crew. However i think they may very well tone it back a bit, not as a result of any feedback from the last film, but because i think they will want to show how Caspian has developed in the 3 intervening years - that he is now king of both the Telmarines and the Narnians, and that he as a person is representative of both groups. It seems natural his accent would evolve slightly as a result.

However, although i think Caspian's accent needs to have become more representative of both the Telmarines and the Narnians, i think the opposite is true of the rest of the crew - i think they really need to play up on the differences between the Narnian and Telmarine crew members, and maintaining a difference in accent is a good place to start.

Part of the reason it seems they added Narnian creatures to the crew was so that they coud really emphasise how Narnia has changed since Caspian came to the throne - to show that the Narnians and Telmarines are now working side by side. I think part of that interesting dynamic between the two different groups would be lost if you did away with the accent, it would diminish the contrast, and make their co-operation seem less significant. You want them to come across as a diverse multi-cultural socitety of co-operation, not as a bland homogeneous mono-culture.

If they are smart, they will use the previous animosity between the Narnian's and the Telmarine's as a means of developing some friction amongst the crew, building up to the mutiny scene from near the end of the book (that's if they even kept that scene in). I think that scene could be lended added significance if it were given a Telmarine-vs-Narnian angle to it. In which case you would really need the difference in accent to again emphasise the contrast.

They should keep the accents. To be honest it would be rather distracting without them.

I really hope they keep the accents. It makes Narnia feel more real. Actually I think it would be really cool if they had different accents for the different islands. I personally didn't find it that distracting, no more than in LWW when I first heard the kids talk.

Yes they really need to keep the accents; its such a vital part of the world-building process.

WHAT!!!!! I love Caspian's accent in PC!!!!!! I hope he still has it!
why would he not though? he had it in PC so it would be inconsistent for him to not have it in VotDT!!!!!!!!!!
