You've no idea how funny your reply was when the title was grabbed from a recent book, all about when rum was the currency of Old Sydney Town, & where the present Sydney Mint now is, which was once the early colonial hospital, known as The Rum Hospital, built with the proceeds from trading barrels of rum, before we developed our own currency, in the early 19th century. Yes, rum is extracted from sugar cane, grown mostly in Queensland. Like gin, vodka, schnapps, Scotch, brandy & whiskey, it goes through a process of distillery, well known in Bundaberg, Qld & the Caribbean, still exporters of rum.
