There's something special about a brand new book, but I definitely buy far more second-hand ones.

Markers, for everyday use. Coloured pencils are better if one is into sketching and art, but need more maintenance.

Butter, if it is on bread etc, and when frying mushrooms or bananas. It is a hard choice as I usually use olive oil for frying otherwise.
