A little newbie question here...so I see we are all to be Square Onions here. A little history on that, please???
A belated happy Canada Day to johobbit and neighbors to the North! I wasn't on here much for this week because our family was at a conference out of town, where we spent July 1 with some of our Canadian friends.
And Ruby...got to think about your blog again--especially the title--when I heard a conference speaker talk a bit about what exactly it means that our life is like a vapor. Sobering thought. Perceptive speaker. Maybe that's what makes me dwell on your blog writing so much...
Greetings to Marigold Gamgee. I haven't yet really met you, but I saw you mentioned your graduate studies is in communication. You mentioned "with emphasis on community relations and crisis management." Hmmm...must these two come in pairs??? I'd be interested to hear more about this study and what your plans are once you finish grad school.
Well...off to prepare as cold a dinner as possible in this summertime heat...and to think we were complaining about the cold only a week or so ago!
*Cor and Vern enter the Square thanks once again to the prodding of MissRosoreo.....*
Umm, it's "MissRosario" or just "Rose".
*Oh... *
Anyway, Mortereve all! I hope everyone is having a pleasant 4th of July weekend? So far the weekend around the castle has been quite pleasant. Very relaxed and quiet... peaceful.
*Except for when you caught the kitchen on fire and we had to call out for roast beef sandwiches tonight.
*
..... yes.
Sooo, now for much overdue catch-up! No condiments were harmed during the making of this post....
--------------------------------------------------
@ Gazer. Well, it seems we got some of y'alls rain the last week or so. After posting in here, it seemed like every other day was an afternoon storm. It was GREAT!
Unfortunately, it's returned to being hot and muggy.
@ Jo. JO!!!!!!!!!!
It's WONDERFUL to see you around again!!
Thanks for the belated happy birthday.
*Eeeep!!!! THANK YOU miss Jo!!
I haven't seen one of those in YEARS! Thankyouthankyouthankyou....*
Woah... that's some fish. Umm, I think I'll pass on this one.
@ Rose. Eh, I know that. I was just playing along. Oh yes, when I kept saying the wrong thing to you ladies...
Aww, sorry for making you sad at the "puppy eyes".
Though, I will remember this for future use...
Yay! *said in a Flynn Rider style* I actually got the name "Little Red" from the show Victorious. Yeah, I've watched that show a bit...
*"Little Red", eh? I think it's very fitting. A very cute nickname for a very lovely miss.
*
@ Mountie. Ello! Nice to see you solo in the Square again. Heh, hope the experience was not a bad one.
@ Gen. GEN! Great to see you here again.
*waves to Mel*
----------------------------------
Well, I think that gets everything. I hope everyone has a great night and a good Sunday!

*Laday Amaltheay struts into the Square*
Oh dear, my substitute Narrator seems to be accustomed to a different clientele. Perhaps I shouldn't have used the word 'diva' in the advertisement like Vern advised me.... Oh look! The chocolate tree is in full bloom. But first, a few directed comments:
JO!!!!!!!!!
So glad to see you in the Square where you belong. Delighted, most exceptionally delighted, to see you!
Miss Rosario, you have done a splendid job of keeping PC on his toes. Between you and Vern, he may turn out to be a half way decent chap.
Stargazer: Greetings from the Royals of Archenland. It has been too long since we have had an actual exchange. I hope you are rested from helping your parents move?
I'm afraid I can not stay and visit as I would like. PC talked me into baking a cake this evening and it is even now in the oven. A delightful mocha.
By the way, don't anyone tell Vern that we hid the fireworks in the stable. He has a touch of hayfever and I'm afraid that if he sneezes....
*A rather singed messenger from Anvard stumbles into the Square* M'Lady!
Oh dear! Are you alright? Have some water.... have some chocolate....
*Before the messenger can explain, a series of explosions can be heard coming from Archenland*
Ooops!
The term is over: the holidays have begun. The dream is ended: this is the morning. - Aslan
Mortereve, all!
And now, "mortereve" shall be even more meaningful, now that I've ended up in this out-of-the-way place in the world called Hawaii. Unfortunately, this has made it hard for me to visit the Square at a time when anyone is on, since by the time work is over for me, it's already going to be nighttime for many of you... Ah well.
I suppose by the time any of you see this, it'll already be the next day, so... Happy 4th of July! Remember the sacrifices of those who fought for our freedom, as well as that one cool guy, John Paul Jones, who when facing a dire situation in a sea battle against the British and was suggested that he surrendered, uttered those immortal words, "I have not yet begun to fight!" And then completely turned around the entire battle and captured the British battleship they were fighting against.
In fact, any time you feel like giving up, just say those words, "I have not yet begun to fight!" And if nothing else, you'll feel a hundred times cooler.
Ah, and I see someone I haven't seen in a very long while! *waves to Marigold Gamgee*
I'll be around for a while longer, though since most of you are sound asleep, I doubt that'll matter.

Mortereve, all!
Was postponing catch-up but decided to lest I disappear again because I don't want to catch up from so many pages.
Firstly, Happy 4th July!
Random what's new: On Friday, I went to Chick-Fil-A for the first time in my entire life. I love it now! The chicken filet burgers, the Icedream ice-cream, the variety of sauces! <3 Yum. We took a paper menu and now I've planned what I want to get next time around. Unfortunately, the first time I went, while in the long line, I stepped on someone's foot and then backed into them. CSLN has officially passed off all her clumsiness to me.
I. am. so. hungry. !. I want Chick-Fil-A. D:
Yesterday CSLN put Henna (I think it's pretty well-known now... It's leaves from this Indian tree crushed to dark-coloured paste to either immerse your arms in them or do patterns. The paste dries in whatever pattern you do, and then you wash it off, revealing a dark orangish pattern. The color is hard to describe.) on my and her hands. I just did my left hand because it's very handicapping to have it on both hands. It's all up to my elbow, and now I wish I just did my left palm. Oh well.
Ketchup:
Nice ditto rainbows, Miss R! I like the color combinations.
*waves to Ithilwen* How're you?
*waves back to Miss R* and nice to see you! Haha...well thank God, the 90 degree weather has cooled off to a nice 70 degrees. Today's pretty pleasant outside. How's the weather there?
I'm doing well, thanks, Cor.
Yikes, Bella! That's just too hot. We 'celebrated' with rain and tornado warnings; one touched down just a few miles from here, but it was pretty weak and no injuries have been reported.
It is, it is! And we kind of don't have central AC so... But it's not so bad, provided it's not very sticky. Oh! The other day I heard the first rain/storm/tornado warning while listening to the radio in the car. It sent chills down my spine.
(It wasn't here though, more north.) I'm glad that you're all safe over there! Are tornado warnings pretty normal there or no?
*waves to Jo* It's lovely to see your mammoth-maroon posts again! =] How have you been?
*waves to Elanor* I'm doing well, thanks! Oh..yes, you can call me AitB or Bella (not from Twilight) Do you have a nickname?
You're Destined's sister, yes? Do say hi to her from me!
Yay, I'm glad you liked the banner, Ruby!
I had a feeling you'd pick the purple one.
" title="On the phone" />
Thank-you, everyone, on the comments on the banner.
Ahh *grabs one of the cupcakes*
*waves to Patterwig's Pal* I don't think we've really formally met, but I have read alot of your posts here and there and enjoyed them. (Or have we met? I'm not sure. :"}) Anywho, you can call me AitB or Bella (not from Twilight)
That's neat that you're memorizing Mark!
For Bible memorizing...we've been memorizing 1 Peter. Usually we just do it in the school year, but my mom thought it would be beneficial to do it in the summer, too... so that's been going well.
Aw, thanks, Mountie!! I don't know if I have congratulated you, but Conga-rats on being a mod!
How've you been?
Genny!! How long has it been?
How are you?!
*likes Malcaroon and Muffin* You both are quite a pair!
Mel, no she did not. I think she threw it away... I'll ask her about it again today!
How have you been, Mel?
*waves to Marigold Gamgee and daughter of the King and extends hand in greeting* You can call me AitB or Bella (not from Twilight).
daughter of the King, conga-rats on becoming a Mod!
*waves to Jacqi* How are you? =]
It's good to see you here, Lady A!!
And you too, stardf. Wow, Hawaii? Very neat.
And I believe I'm done! That was too much skimming (goodness, I wrote "scheming" the first time. I really need to slow down.
"Sloooow Down....slow down... slow doowwn and see Jesus. Slow down the noiiise". ...
I'll be around for a few.

Happy 4th of July, SquareOnions! (and belated Happy Canada Day greetings to our neighbors)...
A little catch-up:
...On Friday, I went to Chick-Fil-A for the first time in my entire life.
We don't have Chick-Fil-A in this part of the country. I have been there once, however, when a good friend of mine got married in Alabama back in 1986. It sounds odd but going there is one of the fun memories of the trip (as is watching a partial solar eclipse from Huntsville's Space and Rocket Center).
And we kind of don't have central AC so... But it's not so bad, provided it's not very sticky.
Whew! I salute you! The problem here is that summers tend to be quite humid. It wouldn't be quite so bad if it was the dry heat like they have in the southwest US. But anything over 55F or so is still too hot.
I'm glad that you're all safe over there! Are tornado warnings pretty normal there or no?
Thanks! Tornadoes are not unusual here (there were several more in the area just this past weekend) because the hot humid air clashes with the cooler stuff coming down from Canada. But tornadoes are not nearly as common here as they are in "Tornado Alley" (down in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas).
Hawaii, stardf? Sounds great! My brother was occasionally sent there when he was in the Navy, and now spends a number of weeks there each year due to his job. He likes it...especially the warmer weather.
Greetings, Lady Amalthea! Glad to see you about the Square, even if our paths are not crossing often.
...so I see we are all to be Square Onions here. A little history on that, please???
A good question indeed, as I'm one who uses that expression. A scan of old town squares seems to indicate that it just sort of 'happened.' I believe this page contains the origin of the phrase. (Tracking this down became a walk down memory lane, as I spotted old avatars of current members, and posts from members who may not visit as frequently these days).
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
Hello, everyone!!
Okay, I'm tired. And sunburned. And eaten alive. On Saturday I went to a cookout. On Sunday I was at an outdoor church service all day, playing volleyball for hours, and then going to play Frisbee. And yesterday I went to a 4th of July picnic, and played volleyball, and got even more bug bites. So at the moment I'm feeling some pain.
And guess what I'm doing today? Playing Tennis.
You seriously like this heat?
I might have been born in the south, but I hate the heat! I do nothing but burn and pass out if I step outside, so there's no benefits for me.
I do!! Of course I hide out in the AC a lot, but I love just sitting in the sun. And I don't burn very much at all (no, don't ask why my shoulders and neck are bright red!).
You're going to DC? Have fun!
When are you going? I'm not going this time 'round, for my trip to NY, but my family may go to DC this September along with visiting our grandparents again. It's not definite yet, but I can't wait! My first actual visit to DC was in 09, and I was so mad I couldn't spend enough time there.
It's an amazing place to be, isn't it?
Yep, leaving Thursday! I'm so excited!! That's so cool, I hope you can go again. This is my first time, so especially exciting!
That's what I do in the winter.
Seriously, though, I'm glad you're enjoying the heat. I just sit and lurk by the AC vents until the heat goes away.
haha . . I do that at times too - but I love the feeling of going out of a cool house, opening the door and BOOM a heat wave. I think it's so cool!
*waves to Cor*
*waves to Elanor* I'm doing well, thanks! Oh..yes, you can call me AitB or Bella (not from Twilight)

Good Mortereve, Square Ones! I hope all is well!
It looks like the Square has picked up a bit since I was last here.
Nothing too exciting has been happening in my part of the world. I've been doing lots of fun little summer activities (swimming, surfing, lemonade stands, etc.
) and my summer math. It's been a good summer so far.
I really would like to start writing another novel this summer. The writing bug has bit me again! I just have to think up a plot...
On Friday, I went to Chick-Fil-A for the first time in my entire life.
*waves to Bella* How are you? Yay! I love Chick-Fil-A! They have the best sweet tea. ^.^ I actually just applied to work there! It'll be my first 'real' job if I get hired, so I'm really excited.
*waves to gazer* How are you?
*waves to Elanor* It sounds like you're having a fun/busy summer! Nothing better than spending a summer out of doors, and with friends and family. ^.^
Well, hopefully I'll be visiting the Square again soon! Adios Squaries!
Mortereve, all!
Firstly, I just learnt later yesterday when Canada Day was, so Happy [belated]Canada Day, Canadians of the square!
Nothing new happening here. Just stayed up last night watching The Andy Griffith Show and then woke up rather late. My cat woke me up at 7 mewing so loud for either attention or to go outside (although my sleepy brain couldn't decipher that she wanted to go outside.) I got up several times to try appease her, lifted the blinds, etc. etc. etc. Finally I gave her some attention and then she went off. Later my mom took her and her sister outside, and my mom says they really enjoyed themselves.
Yesterday, I took my cat out in the grass and she started "purring like a little steam-engine." It was so cute. I realized why: after over a month, she finally has set foot in some grass for a lengthy time, and not being scared of her new surroundings. (I let her out a few weeks ago for a minute or two-ish.) I love kitties.
Catchup!
Your time in Alabama/at Chick-fil-A sounds very memorable, Gazer! Ditto, around here isn't normal Chick-Fil-A area but they decided to open one, so that was nice.
I hope they have more branches throughout the Midwest.
Whew! I salute you! The problem here is that summers tend to be quite humid. It wouldn't be quite so bad if it was the dry heat like they have in the southwest US. But anything over 55F or so is still too hot.
Aww...now... To be honest, I hardly make it without complaning.
Yes! Humidity is terrible! I wish do wish it was dryer, but I'll take humudity over dryness that induces fire. (Is it dryness + hot weather that causes fire?) 55F?! Haha, are you one of the "polar bears" of NW with Jo and Digs?
Oh, okay, I see about the tornados.
I'd love to call you Bella - it's a beautiful name! You can call me Ellie, Ella, or Ela. Or come up with something random.
Yes, Dennie's my sister - I'll give her your greeting!
Thank-you! It's sad that the name Bella has to be related to Twilight, because otherwise it's lovely. I suppose that us writers will have to wait a decade or so before we can call a character Bella so not to taint them with the faintest memory of Twilight.
"Ellie" is cute! Do you like "Nora" or not much?
Thanks so much!! Is Dennie a nice big sister?
*Squee's!* Poggy! I've missed you!
Good luck on your novel! Ditto--that writing bug is going around. Little things start making me want to write--whether the weather or even poetic russet potatoes.
I can't get a good plot, though...
How's your writing been doing?
I'm doing well, thanks! Hanging in there and such, enjoying summer break, etc. *remembers to order sweet tea from Chick-Fil-A* CSLN loooves sweet tea, so I'll be sure to tell her. Oooh, how exciting!! I will be praying for you and the job!
Well, I believe that is it. I'll be around for a few!
*goes and sits by the fountain, munching on an apple*

*wanders into the Square and takes a seat in a patch of sunshine*
Hey ho, good mortereve, all! It's been a lazy afternoon for me, though I'm sure it will liven up some when I mow the lawn this evening. There weather has been so lovely this past week! *is pleased to find several new posts to reply to*
Oh my, Louise the Second, did you really have to point that out? *sigh* Well, I WILL be getting some exercise in tonight. *considers hunting out an invisibility cloak before taking another visit to the chocolate tree*
Hm, my new Harry Potter poster. We actually took it down because it didn't match my new room. Ah well, maybe I can stick it inside my closet or something. Ah, oh yes. Harry, Hermione, and Ron are the ones featured in the center, with Voldemort, Bellatrix, and Draco in the top right corner(ish). And then at the bottom it says "Harry Potter, Deathly Hallows part 1" and whatnot. It's rather cool, if I do say so myself!
And yes, my room is done! Finished! It's a bit, ah, crazy. But I like it. None of the furniture is new (though some used to be Sara's), but it was all repainted. And then the accessories (bedspread, curtains, lamps, rug, etc.) are new. Oh, and we painted it too. So yes, quite a change it was! I'm still trying to register that it's truly my room.
*is jealous of everyone who has their own outdoor swimming pool*
I definitely hope to read through Les Mis as soon as I can, Marigold Gamgee. Sorry to hear that most of your book-buying has consisted of textbooks! I know how that goes.
I really need to get back to reading and writing.
Interesting, Elanor. Sounds like the radio interview was fun! I've often wished for a bit more talent in acting.
*sends some cool weather over to TGW*
Hah, and I love your avatar. I trip up staircases too! *blushes*
But that's the beauty of these virtual treats...they're calorie-free.
Ahah! Louise, he has a point.
*reads Cor's post with interest* Hm. MissRosoreo? That's a new one. Ouch about setting the kitchen on fire, though. I thought that was Vern’s job.
Puppy eyes. Bad idea. I fall for them too easily.
Ah? Well, wherever "Little Red" came from, I rather like it. You have my approval.
Lady A!! 'Tis a pleasure to see you, as always.
Miss Rosario, you have done a splendid job of keeping PC on his toes. Between you and Vern, he may turn out to be a half way decent chap.
I try.
*sends a hello across the ocean to stardf29* Great to see a post of yours! And Hawaii, eh? Hm. That must have been a change.
The weather here is rather nice as well, Bella. Sunny with a light, gentle breeze. *scoots a little farther into her patch of sunshine*
Oh, and lovely new font color! I think Ruby has a similar one... but no worries, it isn't any big deal. *loves the color blue*
Wow, Gazer, I'm impressed that you found the page where the name "SquareOnion" first originated. All those usernames bring back the memories. *mutters something about the possibility of "accio-ing" Ata, Cep, Ti, KK, Lady L, NN95 (miss that kid!), peterpevensie back to the Square*
Aw Elanor, sorry to hear about your [painful!] day. And tennis on top of that? Oo, ouch!

Hello again, everyone!
Though I don't have much catchup to do, I figured I'd better post, because I won't be able to till at least Tuesday. We're leaving at 4:45 AM tomorrow morning. I'll miss you all!!!
I just got the new and improved version of my NaNo novel in the mail - I'm so happy with it!!! It's perfect and beautiful, and I can't wait for my family to read it!
*waves to Elanor* It sounds like you're having a fun/busy summer!
Nothing better than spending a summer out of doors, and with friends and family. ^.^
Definitely; tiring as it is, I love my summer being busy like this. It's so much fun. But I confess, I won't mind having nothing to do . . When will that ever be? *giggles* What are you doing this summer?
Thank-you! It's sad that the name Bella has to be related to Twilight, because otherwise it's lovely. I suppose that us writers will have to wait a decade or so before we can call a character Bella so not to taint them with the faintest memory of Twilight.

Good Mortereve, y'all! How is everyone? Considering I still haven't figured out how to quote other posts, I'll just refrain from responding at the moment
It has been crazy hot here. And not just hot, but humid. It's like as soon as you walk out the door, BOOM-you're surrounded by air as thick as a cloud or something. And then there's the fact that it's been 95+ degrees for the past couple of days.
Not much has been up, though. But yes, hello!

That kind of thick heavy air happens here in the summer too. And the mosquitoes! Ugh! Give me snow any day. Nothing like the invigorating feeling of pins and needles poking into your lungs after inhaling -40F air.

Hello, everyone (as "square onions" doesn't quite roll off my tongue with finesse, I'll just stick to traditional-speak)...it's been so long since I've been by to say hi! And I was just barely getting used to names and "faces" and all that...and now that I've been missing out for nearly a week, I feel like I'm starting over again
At any rate...being gone from home for a chunk of days definitely calls for catch-up in more ways than one! It was nice to visit with you all and read what's happening. Can't envy anyone their summertime temps--we've got them here, too, now
We're looking forward to doing some more traveling at the end of this month and next...heading back east to visit family, and then some family, and then more family. We'll squeeze in a conference and some research in a couple libraries on the way. Looking forward to it, but working hard to get ahead before we go. Time never stands still, especially when we're having fun!
Well...guess I'll go wander through the rest of Narnia Land...until someone devises an ingenious map for us newcomers, who knows where I'll land up...
Ok, I'm back...made my first discovery, thanks to Stargazer. Why, johobbit, I never knew it was you!
G'morning to all you Squaronions. See, the reason I thought of that word was because the inhabitants in both the small city I live in and the big city I live near each call themselves names ending with "onion".
So I get it: kinda like "Bostonians"???
