A tear slipped down Lilly's cheek. she didn't like to think of this girl kind, talented girl being killed. "I hate them." She said with clenched teeth and violet eyes blazing "I hate them and nothing could ever change that." she yanked harshly on a strand of her hair "What sort of disgusting menial being does something like this?" He shyness had fallen completely away for only a few moments "There has to be hope, there just has to be." she caught a rough edged breath and stopped talking. she hated whoever was behind this like nothing, more even than she had hated the headmistress of the orphanage... which was saying allot. "Why would they do something like this? what could they possibly be after?"

Nan wiped away Lilly's tear. "I know. I know. And they deserve to be hated. There is nothing we can do to stop them now, though. But in the future, there may be. In the meantime, we must be extremely cautious, so as not to ruin that future chance.
"And now your life is in great danger. I have told you a great secret. But there is one thing even more important that you must know.... They know I've told you."

Lilly stared at Nan for a moment and then said "In the few days that I've known you... you've become the closest thing to a sister I've ever had, I don't really know why..." She looked down "I wish that there was something I could do now. I would do anything to save the people here... I don't care if my life is in danger, before this I always wished I was dead anyway."

Nan's face looked grim. "I would not wish for death, if I were you. In a place like this, those who wish to be dead usually recieve their wish. And you are the only reciever here who I have entrusted, and therefore, the fate of all recievers lies in your hands. You are their only hope. If there was ever a time for courage, it is now."

Lilly's heart skipped a beat as she realized the full meaning of Nan's words "I- It- It rests on me? but why do you see in me that you think would help? I'm nothing, even if I hate them to the ends of the universe what can I do?" He heart was beating fast, she'd never felt important before.

~*~Brywahr Academy~*~

"I am not the one who chose you," Nan replied. "It's your purpose... your... destiny. All my life here I hoped I would be allowed to be a Guide to a Reciever, so I could teach them all the secrets I discovered. But I never believed I would be allowed, since the Givers suspect me. Yet, for some reason beyond what I know, I was assigned to you. If it were not for that, these secrets would have died with me. But now, they will continue on with you. I must trust in you."

Lilly pondered this for a moment with question in her eyes "I don't understand, how can you know that it's my destiny? I've only been here for a few weeks." She was thoroughly confused by this conversation "How can someone like me e right for this? and how can someone like you be allowed to die for it?"

"I know because you were assigned to me," Nan replied. "It's the strangest thing in the world for the Givers -- who despise me and think me a spy -- to trust me enough to allow me to teach one of their new Recievers. It would never have taken place if it were not for Divine help. Apparently there is something within you that you do not yet realize. Something that only God knows, and he is trying to bring out. I do not know. I only know I must act on the chance I am given.
"It may seem unfair to you that my ending will be tragic. But you do not understand. You do not know how I feel about it. I have accepted it. I knew the risk when I decided to learn the secrets of this place. But I decided it was worth it, if it meant saving the others. It is a sad fact that the Brywahrians are allowed such treachery. But such evil must happen for a time, I suppose, in order for the good to achieve greatness in the end."

Lilly was at a loss for words, she didn't even know what to think, she hadn't thought about that aspect of it. How could God, who loved the people he had created, be so cruel as to let things like this be carried through with? But she already knew the answer... it was another way to let his glory shine through i all. "Nan... I'm going to miss you." another tear slipped out "I'll accept this as best I can."

Nan smiled. "And I will miss you. But we need not miss eachother just yet. I have much to teach you. And I do not know how much time we have left. We may have a month, or perhaps only today. We must work fast."

Lilly became a little business like "What do need to teach me? We should start now." She released her hair and brushed her already to perfection skirt. "I am ready for whatever I need to learn."

"I admire your readiness," Nan answered. "Let's begin. I have made a list of all the different coordinates I've over-heard Givers teach to Recievers. Whenever a Reciever is taught to use a device, the device is made to automatically respond to the coordinates given, whether correct or incorrect. Try to lay hold on devices in secret, and experiment with them to find out what the correct coordinates are. Then compare it to the list to see which Recievers are taught correctly and which ones are taught incorrectly. This will show which children the Head of the Academy is targeting. But this will be very difficult considering the Giver keep the devices always locked up. There is a boy who may be able to help you. If you are willing to take this task, I will give you his name."

Lilly was almost as exhilarated as she was frightened out of her wits. never before had she been trusted with anything this important "I am ready ad willing." She took a deep breath "Whatever God may ask of me through you I will do."

"Very well. Go to Darak. He's a master inventor. He has sources -- I don't know what sources. He can make anything, and get what he needs to make anything. He may have a way of getting the devices the Givers use and teach. But go quickly. Once you have spoken to him, return to me here."

Lilly barely murmured a "Au revoir" before she left the room and walked as fast as she could without running down the halls towards she thought Darek's room was. She had a lucky guess and ended up in the right spot. She pounded on the door and waited to be let in.
