Lilliandil Jessica Barden is a few months younger then Will Poulter and almost his same height except she's a bit shorter I think. ;)

I can't wait for the 4th movie - I am sure it will be great -the only thing is that, they should really put in some racial equality- of course the Pevensie family is okay, but people like Jill- they should give a chance for ethnic minorities to play a part to.- don't you think !

Even if you were to throw away everything that was written about Jill Pole in the book and just cast the character without any predetermined notion about how she should look, you still wouldn't be able to escape the fact that the story is set in 1940's Britain. Racial equality doesn't really enter the equation....

I don't know whether to agree with icarus or with elizabeth252. By the way welcome to Narniaweb elizabeth252!

If Jill had a background of Indian in her, like maybe the ancestory could have taken place in the mid 1800s when some of the American indians were escorted from American to Britian in the 1700's and mixed with some of the Britians as some of the Indians became legal Britian's themselves throughout the decades. Jill wouldn't have a dark complexion but enough for a possible long face, more noticeable freckles and hazel eyes. <--- I have a friend who's like this. She's really pretty too.

I just feel as if the girl to be casted with different ethnic minorities should be Aravis.

... the illustrations were done after C.S. Lewis died and his stepson Douglas spoke of not liking some of the art work. So I woun't rely too much on what the illustrations of persons look like.

I think you have misunderstood something; the illustrations were done before the book was published in 1953, ten years before Lewis died.
They show a girl with medium length blonde hair.

There, shining in the sunrise, larger than they had seen him before, shaking his mane (for it had apparently grown again) stood Aslan himself.

coracle, Pauline Baynes for # 1 didn't illustrate the books until late 60's or early/mid 70's. And 2 it never describes Jill Pole with having blonde hair in the book, just that the past illustrations do. I was just clarifying that in my opinion you shouldn't rely on illustrations at all. I know that in newer illustrations of Jill, she has brown hair. CS Lewis obviously tried to make every one seem as though they had blonde hair instead of the WW. But Jill having brown hair is my opinion because I see her that way and it looks to go more so with her type of character.

Not sure where you heard that, since all the First Editions of each book have illustrations by Pauline Baynes.

That said, i'd actually agree with you that the illustrations aren't the best measure to be using for determining characters appearances. For instance the way the illustrations in Prince Caspian all show him with dark hair (as his hair colour wasn't stated in the book) whereas in VDT, they all show him with blonde hair (as his hair colour is stated in this book).

Also, i think in the casting for the last two films, the producers have consistently shown that something as minor as hair colour hasn't even been a consideration when they've done the casting. Lucy, Jadis, Caspian, Prunaprismia, probably a few others - none of those characters have the "correct" hair colour in the movies, and quite honestly it hasn't mattered one bit.

I may have been thinking about some of the cover arts. IDK. I remember reading an interview somewhere after Pauline Baynes passed away that her credits for illustrating Narnia was in the 1970's or 1960's.

Indeed. I don't have a copy of the very first edition ever printed (such a shame ;)) ) but I do have a copy of LWW from this set here. This set was first printed in 1959 and has the full set of Baynes' illustrations. And Lewis himself talked about Baynes a great deal.

CS Lewis obviously tried to make every one seem as though they had blonde hair instead of the WW.

Baynes not following Lewis' descriptions when she illustrated characters has led to a good deal of confusion. ;)) But even so, Lewis did NOT give everyone blond hair except for the White Witch, though he certainly seemed to prefer it as when he did describe hair, it was almost always blond.

White Witch - not described (contrary to popular belief, Lewis never described her hair as black).
Digory - golden hair (at least his beard was in LB)
Polly - not described.
Peter - not described.
Susan - black hair.
Edmund - not described.
Lucy - golden hair.
Caspian - golden hair.
Rilian - Fair hair.
Tirian - not described.
Shasta/Corin - fair hair.
Aravis - not specified, but assumed black hair as per her race.
Eustace - not described.
And to bring this subject back around to be on topic, Jill - not described.

In fact, the only physical description attributed to Jill Pole, is that she's "small". So the filmmakers have a fair bit of artistic license with Jill (not that they've followed many of the descriptions thus far ;)) ).

ETA: After reading your post above Damsel, I had a thought on where the confusion might be. Baynes later went back in and colored her illustrations. Though I don't know what year that happened. Maybe that's what you read about and thought she was illustrating them for the first time?

Tirian is described to having blonde hair at the beginning I thought.

Thank you too fantastia_kitty, that may be why I was a little confused.

I think that the actress playing Jill could be American if her family originated in England and she can easily do the accent

Yes that can easily be done Lu_valient. I have a friend from Australia, technically not British but he moved to the states in 2005 and I've been friends with him since. After five years that he's been here he still has his accent. So yes it can work for some American's who are raised by hearing accents.

Yes I'm hoping whoever gets the part of Jill is American. That would be so cool! ;)

No I don't think Tirian's hair color was ever given in the book.

But we are here to talk about Jill Pole. I always imagined her to be slender and not short, dark brown hair with blue eyes. I like hazel too but blue would look good. Wavy hair and 5'4 or 5'5. My cousin in England recently saw Will and said he looked to be 5'7 from where he was standing. But yes I want Jill to be a few iches shorter but not short.

Liberty, I remember after watching the Harry Potter movies for the first time I was like "Hermione/Emma Watson IS Jill!!" However, the HP franchise got to her first, it would be absolutly not a good idea to have such a huge, well known, fantasy actress in the Narnia movies. The comparisions would be endless--not to mention the fact that Emma's already 20? 21? ---even if she looks a bit younger I think it's still too old to play Jill who is supposed to the the same age as Eustace/Will Poulter.
