Maybe he thinks that if he goes to the army his parents won't let Lucy go by herself and therefore sparing both of them. But if you see, even in the book, Lucy doesn't really mind going. Of course if she had a choice she woundn't go, but she isn't as bumbed out about it as Edmund is.

I think that Edmund's primary motivation for trying to enlist in VDT would be to serve his country. Having been a king in Narnia and in battle to save a kingdom are ingrained in him though now an underaged lad back in England.
However, while standing in line, I can see it cross his mind that "Also, I won't have to deal with that 'Record Stinker' cousin of mine for a while."

There is definitely no "a" in definite.
The Mind earns by doing; the Heart earns by trying.
Why does he do it? It's actually one of the things I saw in the trailer that I'm most curious about...even though it's probably not a big thing. I haven't read every single post on NW about this topic, so forgive me if my theory's already been stated.
I think he's registering because he doesn't want to visit Eustace. Here's the logic behind that:
1. in the book, he is very put out that he has visit that rotten stinker, and I wouldn't put it past the movie adaptation of his character to try to run away.
2. It seems as though he hasn't thought about it much. He's supposed to be doing something else (helping Lucy with the groceries), and his bike is parked right beside Lucy's, which shows that she came with him.
3. The only thing that seems to come of it is his being called "squirt", to which he protests that he is a king. The producers probably wouldn't add in something like that just to show that Edmund considers himself a king.
4. It would be very funny, at least I think so...
5. Lucy doesn't seem very surprised at this (she figured he would try to get out of the trip), but she does say that he is not supposed to (his parents didn't know)
My conclusion: Edmund and Lucy bike into the city to get some food for the trip. While Lucy is shopping, Edmund sees a "England needs you" sign, and tries to run away to prevent his having to see his cousin. Lucy returns and deduces his scheme. She foils it.
What are your thoughts on this?
Mm, I don't think it would be logical of Edmund to take the risk of joining the army just to escape spending a couple months with his cousin.
My guess is that he's desperate for respect. He's tired of being treated like a kid in England, and joining the army would prove that he's really a king and more than meets the eye. Kinda like movie Peter in PC. I'm sure Ed misses his glory days of Narnia. That's my theory.
I think Ed is used to defending his country. As a former king it makes sense that he wouldn't want to just stand by while there's a war going on. I think the "I'm a king" isn't so much Peter syndom as it is, "I shouldn't be this helpless in a time of war." It comes from wanting to help and serve, not from wanting respect and to be served imo.
^ I agree with you, AslanIsOnTheMove. Edmund has grown up a lot during the past couple years and especially during his various adventures in Narnia. I think it shows a lot of maturity that he wants to serve his country by helping defend and protect - just like a king should. After all, once a king or queen of Narnia...always a king or queen.

-centaur-, interesting thoughts!
So you see it as Edmund tries to get into the army so he won't have to go to stay with the Scrubbs? I'm not sure where you think this is taking place.
I don't think they're in their home area - but in whichever of the university towns the Scrubbs are in (see my post above). I think Aunt Alberta has sent them on an errand to be useful, and they have gladly gone out to get away from their relatives.
Lucy's got her gas mask box tucked under the bike seat, and the grocer has packed their purchases into a fruit-box.
The Pevensies live in a suburb of London, (where they would go to local shops or markets, not into the city - it's a big place!) All the family are leaving, so they don't need supplies at this stage.
There, shining in the sunrise, larger than they had seen him before, shaking his mane (for it had apparently grown again) stood Aslan himself.
"...when a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor's stead, the Table would crack and Death itself would start working backwards."
The opening scenes are definitely in Cambridge. Something which i am very pleased they got right The building in the opening shot is The Gatehouse of King's College Cambridge. Go check out the Narnia Filming Locations thread for some comparison photos i compiled, its a pretty remarkable shot considering it was actually filmed in a Car Park in Australia!
Likewise i also noticed that you can spot the spires of the famous King's College Chapel building from the Scrubb's bedroom window (see here) which means you can pretty much work out exactly where in Cambridge the scrubbs house is supposed to be!
I cannot wait to see Skander potray Edmund again! I also like the fact he wants to serve for his countrym I think it fits his character like a glove and would be the type of thing he'd do.
And wow his voice is deeper and he's certainly grown handsome. haha.

I also can't wait to see edmund. I think that Skandar Keynes' acting has been getting better each movie, and he's going to be great!!
Edmund's character matured quite a bit between LWW and PC; I'm very interested in seeing how much further his character will develop in VDT. He is, after all, one of my favorite characters.
And welcome to Narniaweb, edmundrox12!

i think that edmund from llw was a jerk at the beginning and he was cool by the end, then in pc he was amazing, and i also can't wait to see if he gets even better.
I am so not looking forward to Skander in the Dawn Tredar. They ruined his character! Now he's like Peter all of a sudden.
~Though you may want one thing, God's plan may be something entirely different, and it is always better His way.~
^ thing is crystalarwen, Edmund is in character while Peter wasn't in PC. Edmund in the book does try to act as if he is more superior towards Caspian. Also the movie hasn't come out yet so that sort of judgment should come a bit later at the end of this year.
