Hi everyone, I'm not sure if this is already a topic that has been discussed, but I was wondering what people thought about a new cast for the Magician's Nephew? Here is my idea for it:
Digory - Jude Hill
Polly - Bronte Carmichael
Jadis - Michelle Williams
Uncle Andrew - Hugh Grant
Mrs Ketterley - Jenny Agutter
Mabel Kirke - Olivia Colman
Mr Kirke - Jude Law
King Frank - Danny Dyer
Queen Helen - Emily Blunt
Mrs Lefay - Michelle Yeoh
Fledge/Strawberry - Hugh Bonneville
Aslan - David Oyelowo
A bit of background, for my university course, I have to pitch a film of our choice, and I chose The Magican's Nephew, interested to hear your thoughts
I think that’s an idea for a cast list. I think the most important thing is that whoever they cast, they can get the characters right.
I kind of also think Emma Stone could be Jadis or she could be Helen.
"And this is the marvel of marvels, that he called me beloved."

Some interesting choices in there. The children's roles are often the hardest to pick, given you are in a perpetual race against time to get the ages right, but if they do the stories in publication order again then we are potentially looking at casting for the role of a 12 year old child in a production which might itself still be 12 years away. Therefore I'm backing my own entirely hypothetical unborn children for both parts 😉
In all.seriousness though, I've not yet seen Belfast, but I've heard good things about it, as well as Jude Hil, so I like that pick. 👍
Michelle Williams I could definitely see as a younger Tilda Swinton type, unfortunately she is far too short for the role (only 5 foot 4) especially since Jadis in MN is described as a statuesque Boudicca-type figure (Gwendolyn Christie often gets brought up in that regard).
I'm definitely though a big fan of Hugh Grant's recent career turn into fantastic villainous roles, therefore I can definitely see him as Uncle Andrew, even if I typically see the character as more a more tall and slender individual (like a Peter Capaldi type).
Danny Dyer is someone I absolutely despise as an actor, but I definitely love the idea of a "Danny Dyer type" as Frank the Cabby. Essentially the same look and feel, just someone with actual acting ability.🙂
Aslan's an interesting choice too, I've enjoyed David Oyelowo's work in a lot of things, though I think regardless of who they pick they will need to do a lot of voice modulation in post production to ensure the tone of voice sounds plausible for one that might emanate from a very large Lion.
Now that we have a real filming timeline, know how old of actors to look for, and are moderately certain the movie will be MN, I thought it might be nice to pull this general casting thread to the top of the list.
Main characters to cast:
Digory
Polly
Uncle Andrew
Jadis
Aslan
Minor characters:
Frank and Helen
Strawberry
Digory's mom
Aunt Letty
I'm going to call it right now - Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet to re-team for a Magicians Nephew Cameo as a younger take on Helen & Frank.
Although I'm sure Greta Gerwig doesn't want to brand herself as unimaginative by feeling obliged to cast them as the main roles in literally everything she does, i think they could work well for a Helen and Frank cameo, as it would be a good way to signify to the audience that even though these characters are only briefly in the story and only right at the end, that they are still significant enough to be worthy of attention, and a brief star-heavy cameo, particularly one with a meaningful connection to the Director, could be a way of signalling that to the audience.
@icarus If they're going to be in MN, that's where I'd put them too. Also, they are attractive actors who, some years down the road, will look fantastic reprising the roles in LB. I think Frank and Helen must have been younger than Baynes' illustrations make them look. They didn't have children yet. I know that's not a huge indicator, but it was Victorian London.
If I could have one wish for this movie, I think it would be Peter Capaldi for uncle Andrew.
I said it before and I'll say it again. If Gwendoline Christie isn't cast as Jadis, I'll RIOT!

I remember her being brought up and thinking she would be absolutely fantastic! I like a little star power in these roles. I would want the kids to maybe be fresh talent.
@son-of-eve I hadn't thought of her before, but she would be a great choice. Hannah Waddingham is also a strong possibility
I also think Miranda Otto would be excellent for Aunt Letty.

My initial thoughts to this is that it could really work! I'm up for that possibility 😀 .

My only concern about Peter Capaldi in retrospect would be whether he now gives off too much of a "Doctor Who" vibe.
That's not necessarily a diss on the quality or production values of that show, more just the case that like MN it also involves travelling between multiple worlds, times, and realities, and people are bound to make the association in their head.
Visually though, I can definitely see the appeal, as he is spot-on for the description offered in the book.
@icarus Peter Capaldi is very well known over two generations of film and TV watchers; more recently he has played Paddington's unfriendly neighbour as well as Doctor Who.
It would be better to have a less well known but even older actor, and my pick is still Bill Nighy. He has the weathered look, and the scrawny tall look.
Previously I would have also suggested Matt Smith or David Tennant but since their Doctor Who days they have each played some high profile roles. They are still awesome.
There, shining in the sunrise, larger than they had seen him before, shaking his mane (for it had apparently grown again) stood Aslan himself.
