Samus is one of the oldest female vidoegame protagonists. Heroines were not common at the time the first Metroid game revealed Samus is a girl. Her character is always very stoic and mysterious, making her one of the few female protagonists that prefers not to show so explicitly her femenity. She is still feminine though. That makes her a rather interesting character.

The Metroid series took a different turn once the N64 came out. The first two for the NES and SNES were side scrolling action games. Then Metroid Prime came out and that put Samus into the FPS format and she hasn't left since. I would have gotten into Metroid but I simply don't care for the FPS genre.

When we were trying to get the old Atari working we stumbled across my wife's NES and several cartridges, among them the original Metroid. I never played this game in my youth and was more of a Final Fantasy/Zelda fan at the time. I might have to plug it in and give it a go and see how it is. B-)

My wife and I played Contra the other night for several hours (the original NES version) and even with the Magic Code (up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, B, A, start ;)) ) the game is ridiculously hard! You need the code just to get a few levels into the game...plus I'm old and rusty now.

Towards the end of the NES days (early 90's) there was a game that came out called Star Tropics. It's very similar to original Zelda (except set in modern times and on a tropical island) and I'm curious if anyone here has ever played it or heard of it.

I dont like FPS either, but Metroid is completely on a new level. It is not a FPS by no means. Don´t be deceived by its appearence. You barely shoot, most of your weapons are even used to resolve enviromental puzzles, rather than killing things.

FPS are not bad, buti personaly don´t like them because they are far to violent and linear. But the metroid prime series is oftenly confused as a FPS, when the game plays like an action adventure game instead, similar to the Zelda games. FPS do not focus on exploration and puzzle resolving, instead they focus more on action and shooting and are in a first person perspective, hence their name.

What I try to explain that the Metroid formula was not altered when Metroid Prime was released, despite it was in a first person perspective. Confusion usually arises. FPS fans are bored with the slow and complex gameplay mechanics of Prime. Action adventure fans dismiss the game as another alien/space shooter. What I want to prove is that the Metroid Prime series is a actually a FPA. That means a first person adventure.

I just saw a preview for Final Fantasy Crystal Bearers for the Wii. I actually thought the preview was going to be for a game for the PS3 or 360 based on the graphics but this one really looks good. Nintendo doesn't have much for RPG's but what it does have is really good. I am a big fan of Tales of Symphonia (both games for GameCube and Wii) and this one has my interest. The question is when will I be able to get to a store to get it with school starting this upcoming week.

Haha Fencer... what must I do to prove you that the Metroid Prime Trilogy is not a shooter? Believe me... you love Zelda, right? Well Metroid is pretty much a Zelda game in space.

Now, talking about FF Crystal Chronicles, I really like those games, but to be honest i feel they are more action adventure games rather than RPG´s. IGN´s review of Crystal Bearers was not good. But to be honest I don´t trust that site anymore.

I have FF Crystal Chronicles for GC and I would agree it's more of an action game than RPG (like Final Fantasy or even the Tales Series). It does play a lot like a Zelda game, except you don't fight random enemies in the field. And as for IGN and other game reviews, they have a tendency of giving games I've had little interest in very high reviews. But FF Crystal Bearers looked impressive to me and if it is along the lines of Crystal Chronicles, I don't think I will be very dissapointed.

I only made one comment on Metriod and I think you commented on that twice. And that comment wasn't really on that FPS, but more about the transition of gameplay style of the series between the SNES and N64.

And speaking of Zelda, I was hearing a rumor out there that they were planning a new Zelda game for the Wii. But I haven't heard dates for it yet. That will be on my get-list as soon as it comes out.
